Let's Make Some Pretty Photos...
We can make very pretty pictures with rounded corners.
We can use children's photos or photos of our pets or any other photos. All we need is a little time. It is fun, easy and not expensive at all.
I will show you how to make a photo with rounded corners with Inkscape and Gimp. Inkscape is a vector graphics editor and Gimp, Image Manipulation Program, is free raster graphics editor. Both can be downloaded for free.
Kitten is public domain image picture by C. E. Price.
First we choose a photo - any photo we want in digital format - png, jpg, gif. We just import it into Inkscape.
How Inkscape Looks Like...
Working space is divided into nine major areas:
1. Menu (at the top of the window)
2. Commands Bar
3. Snap Controls Bar
4. Rulers, Guides and Grids
5. Tool Controls Bar (also called just Controls Bar)
8. Color Palette
9. Status Bar
We can make photos with rounded corners with other programs too, for instance with Adobe Photoshop®, Adobe Illustrator®, Corel® PaintShop Photo or CorelDRAW® Graphics Suite...
Let's Resize it
When our photo is imported let us resize it. We just hold the photo in one corner and drag it into the center. In the top line we can see how photo is being resized.
Another and easier way how to resize a photo is to directly type the size in the Tool Controls bar, but we have to lock it first - width and height are both resized this way.
Let us resize photo to 400 x 270 px. After that we must resize page that we are working on too with Document Properties. Just click Fit page to selection, otherwise our photo will be very small on a large white piece of paper.
On the right size of the window in the bottom we can set zoom, which means how big or small will photo be during our work.
On the top of the photo we put a rectangle (we must press F4 and we can draw a rectangle). It means we must place it over the photo so there are two layers.
The corners on this rectangle are not rounded yet. We round it ourselves simply by holding the red point in the right top corner and drag it up and down.
Then we must shape it a little bit. First we must press Select tool (dart) in the Tool Box or keyboard shortcut F1 so we can shape it. The rectangle must be the same size us our photo.
We can also make a foggy impression by clicking blur on the rectangle just before we mask it. We can choose between eight types of blurs (Filters - Blurs - Noisy Blur or Fancy Blur in the Menu bar).
When we are done we select all with Ctrl+A and search for Object - Mask - Set in the Menu bar.
And our rounded photo is done. Just save it and export it and you have pretty photos with rounded corners.
We can also make a photo in a shape of a circle or a star.
How to Make It With Gimp
It is even easier to make photographies with rounded corners with Gimp. First, we must open our photo and resize it to 400 x 270 px. We do that with Image - Scale image.
After that we must add transparency with Layer - Transparency - Add Alpha Channel.
We can get rectangle shape of our photo with Select - Rounded Rectangle. But right after we select rounded rectangle we must remove corners of our photo. We do that with Select - Invert and click on all four corners and press Delete.
And that's it. All we have to do is just save it (Save as, because we don't want to replace our original photo). It is done.
And the Easiest Way is...
And there is another one, even easier way to make photos with rounded corners with Gimp.
We just open our photo, resize it with Image - Scale image, and then make rounded corners with Filters - Decor - Round Corner.
We can add shadow and background if we want.
And this is the picture we get.
Again, just save it (as jpg or png), and this is it.
