Learn How to Make a Halloween Burlap Owl Door Hanger

If you love owls and burlap, you're going to love this burlap owl door hanger craft project. After making the burlap ghost, the black cat and the witch door hangers, I decided to make an owl one also.

Although there are more pattern pieces used in making this burlap owl door hanger, the owl is really very simple to make. As with the other door hangers, I used plastic bags for the filling and I spray-sealed the finished door hanger so it could be hung outdoors.

If you are like me, you'll enjoy making these burlap door hangers so much that you'll have to end up giving a couple as gifts.

6 Easy Steps

1. Print patterns and cut from burlap
2. Eye circles, beak and breast pieces
3. Glue the double pieces
4. Stuff the owl
5. Paint the owl door hanger
6. Finish and hang

Supplies Needed

• Burlap (any color because it will be painted over)
• Merged PDF includes: Owl Body Part A, Owl Body Part B, Owl eyes-ears-beak and breast, Owl wings, Owl hat and feet
• Plastic bags or polyfill (I used plastic Walmart-type bags and cut the bags in strips for stuffing)
• Craft glue (I used Aleene's Tacky Glue)
• Craft paints and brushes
• Thin wire (for hanging the ghost)
• Spray SealerTwig (or small piece of branch)
• Raffia and or ribbon
• Fall leaves or flowers

1. Print Patterns and Cut From Burlap

1. Print and cut out the pattern pieces.
2. Pin the pattern pieces to the burlap.
3. Before cutting, fold the burlap for the pieces that you need two of.
4. Cut the pieces, adding about 1/4" around all the pieces. This extra is the area that will be glued.

2. Eye Circles, Beak and Breast Pieces

1. Glue the large eye circles, overlapping them slightly, to the top owl body shape.
2. Apply glue to the back of the beak and slide it up under the large eye shapes.
3. Add the smaller eye circles to the centers of the large eye circles.
4. Glue the breast to owl body.

3. Glue the Double Pieces

1. The photo shown is of the witch door hanger, but the owl pieces are glued in the same fashion.
2. Glue around the edges of one side of the body, leaving an area open for stuffing.
3. Do the same with the ears, wings, feet and hat.

4. Stuff the Owl

1. The photo above shows how the ghost door hanger was stuffed, but this owl is stuffed in the same manner.
2. If you will be using this owl door hanger outside, stuff the owl pieces with plastic bags. (I used Walmart bags that I cut in strips for stuffing).
3. Stuff the pieces lightly and then glue the openings closed.

5. Paint the Owl Door Hanger

1. Now the fun begins for real. You can choose whatever colors you want for your owl hanger.
2. Give the pieces two coats of paint, letting the first coat dry before adding the second coat.
3. If you want, you can glue the ears to the back of the head, the feet to the center bottom of the body and the wings onto the body before adding the dots, flashes, dashes, etc.
4. Glue the hat over the left ear.

6. Finish and Hang

1. When the paint and glue dry, attach a piece of wire for the hanger.
2. Take a hank of raffia and tie it to the top of the wire.
3. Glue to hold in place.
4. Add fall leaves if you desire.
5. Glue the twig (or small piece of the branch) to the bottom of the feet.
6. Add leaves or a fall flower to one end of the branch.
7. If the door hanger will be hung outdoors, give the front and back of the door hanger two coats of spray sealer.
8. Let dry between coats.
