Do You Believe in Fairies?

fairies-in-art

Do you believe fairies are real?

Do you believe in fairies?   Do you have to be a child to believe? Do you have to believe in them before you can see them? Are fairies real or not?

Fairies and fairylike beings are found in cultures around the world, particularly in Britain where fairy faith has long been associated with ancient Celtic beliefs going back as far as fifteen hundred years.

At times, fairies were considered to be remnants of pagan faiths and a source of evil. At other times, they were considered to be good and gentle, secret helpers and inspiring to deserving individuals.

Most believers think fairies possess both good and bad traits in dealing with the human world. Even as sweet and cute as Tinkerbell is, she had that impish side to her too.

What are Fairies?

... and where can I find them???

Fairies are often thought of as tiny mystical beings with flowing pastel clothing, impish personalities, and translucent wings.

"I think, at a child's birth, if a mother could ask a fairy godmother to endow it with the most useful gift, that gift should be curiosity. "

~ Eleanor Roosevelt

"When the first baby laughed for the first time, its laugh broke into a thousand pieces, and they all went skipping about, and that was the beginning of fairies.   And now when every new baby is born, its first laugh becomes a fairy.   So there ought to be one fairy for every boy or girl. "

~ James Matthew Barrie, Peter Pan

Perhaps they live in trees...

... maybe they live in castles

Perhaps they only come out at night and we mistake them for fireflies....

The Cottingley Fairies

The Cottingley Fairies appear in a series of five photographs taken by Elsie Wright (1901–88) and Frances Griffiths (1907–86), two young cousins who lived in Cottingley, near Bradford in England.

In 1983 the girls admitted that they faked the pictures using cardboard cutouts that they copied from a popular children's book about fairies. However, Elsie, the older girl, said that the fifth picture was genuine.

Overall, even if these pictures were all faked, they intrigued people and captivated imaginations everywhere as to whether or not fairies are indeed real.

The photographs and two of the cameras that the girls used are on display in the National Media Museum in Bradford, England and there have been numerous movies made about this story.

The Fifth Photo

This is the "fifth" picture in a series of the five pictures that were taken in 1917, the one that in 1983 Elsie, the older of the two girls, claimed was genuine.

Normally faeries are invisible to the naked eye, there are a few different seeing stones, but they can also show themselves to us if they want

I don't know if I believe in them, but I sure do know I love them. Among many mythical creatures. Unicorns and dragons, what a lovely thought that they could possibly exist. Angels... all of it. This was a nice article to read. :)

Peterpan: "I do believe in fairies... I do, I do, I do!". Fairies are real, you just need to believe, and have confidence on them. Don't forget hope! I don't know what's gotten on me, but this past few weeks, I keep on searching about fairies on the web. Indeed, they are real. I've read many encounters, and watch A Fairytale: A true story. There is a little voice inside me which I cannot understand but I know the feeling. There's also a picture in my head of a little fairy. It keeps on appearing when I am doing some things, Spread the word by Perterpan: "I do believe in faries... I do, I do, I do!".

If you believe it, it exists! So say you, so be it, at least, for you.

anonymous on January 07, 2012:

It is very possible that there really are fairies and most of us simply have lost the ability to see them just like some people are telepathic and others can see ghosts. Who knows...

BageAKumar on September 09, 2011:

Fairies are really beautiful whether they exit or not, doesn't matter.

pepys on September 09, 2011:

Wow - my grandmother was a Scot, and yes she did. When I feel all grown up I don´t believe in them, but most of the time, specially when I am out in the country or writing, yes I most certainly do.

agoofyidea on September 09, 2011:

It would be a sad world if we didn't believe in fairies. Just because we've never seen them doesn't mean they don't exist. Great lens.
