Let the button craze begin!
I am crazy about flip flops! I just can't imagine a summer without them and as summer is closing in fast it's time to get a bunch of flip flops (the cheap ones) and give them a makeover.
My first project is a pair of colorful button flip flops and I have to say I just love how they turned out.
You can see a step by step picture (and word) tutorial on how I made them and I really hope you will be making a pair for yourself this summer as they are super easy and really inexpensive.
They work great with jeans and well pretty much anything else.
All photos on this site are taken by me unless stated otherwise.
What you need to make a pair - Supplies for the crafty
The most important thing you will need are flip flops (dooh). I was so lucky to snatch these beauties at a dollar store. Super price and no worrying if you mess them up as they didn't cost that much. The ones I got are quite sturdy and very comfy so I am positive they will last a long time.
Buttons! Any you like will do, if you like the ones I used you can find them at the bottom of this page.
Some fabric, the color of the fabric depends on the color of the flip flops. I used a pair of old white shorts that got torn. If you have a chance to use something old do it.
Glue gun, needle, string, super glue, hammer and nail (optional).
Lets Do It - Step by step
Start by cutting a small square piece of cloth. Put on the flip flop and tuck the cloth under the straps. This way you can align the cloth the way you want it to look in the end (how high the buttons will go) and more importantly how it will look on your leg. When done use a marker and trace it around the straps. Cut two cloths.
Take the glue gun and glue the cloths on the straps. Let it dry. Now it's time to add the first buttons! Decorate the straps with buttons (use glue gun). I do hope you are more skilled with a glue gun than I am as I always end up burning my fingers (thankfully the glue isn't hot enough to cause any serious damage).
Buttons Ahoy! - Sew, sew, sew cool!
Start sewing on the buttons. You can do more layers to get more volume. Let your imagination run wild.
Now the hammer and nail part is optional. I thought that buttons might start falling of or that the glue would not be strong enough so I punched the holes through the buttons and straps with a thin nail and hammer and sewed it up together. Any excuse to use a hammer is good enough for me =) plus after many weeks of wearing these now I know this was a good idea as all buttons are still where they should be.
Get the Buttons - You can never have enough buttons
Buttons are one of the few things I buy exclusively online as stores never seem to have the ones I want (just my luck I suppose).
Posing with the new flops - Don't you just love the colors?
You can make these in pretty much any color known to mankind and they will always look awesome. I wanted to do multi color as I needed something colorful to match my jeans but the more I think about it the more I want a mono-color (or gradient) ones.
While you're at it why not cover your ballet flats with buttons too? I think it would look equally amazing - this being my project for next summer. I'm thinking about making a pair of button flip flops with a pattern - flower, wonder how this will turn out... Stay tuned!
All in all this was a super fun project for me and I do think these would make a great gift or a craft for a teens birthday party... I mean who wouldn't want a pair (OK probably a few guys would mind walking around in these ;)
Buttons I used
I got my buttons off of eBay and I really love them but they do take quite a while to arrive. There are thousand different buttons to choose from (only logical as they come from all around the globe) and they are all on a budget - but even if they are inexpensive I never manage to stay on a budget as I want them all and usually order more than I need - they are so easy to fall in love with.
These are exact ones (the seller is the same too) as the ones I used and they are great - I love how they are just a bit transparent and how vivid the colors are.
Will you be making your own pair? Have you made your own flip flops before? I would love to hear from you - experiences, suggestions or just saying hi!

@MrsTickle73: The hot glue is just a short-cut, you can sew the buttons on (it takes a bit longer though). Oh and hot glue burns aren't all that bad haha =)
