Wear It and Wear It Well!

In part 2 of 101 necktie craft projects, we look at clothing. From dresses and pants to shirts and skirts, there are so many creative ideas out there.

While some of these are photos of ideas from others, many are tutorials with more detail about how they were planned and created. I love to learn from the tutorials, take inspiration from the photos and combine them to create my own ideas.

My problem is time! There is definitely not enough time to act on all of the ideas in my head. So I keep a journal where I draw my ideas, and as I am able, I act on them. Some turn out, and others don't, and that's okay. It's the act of creating new items from the plethora of outstanding necktie patterns that I truly love!

I hope you find some new ideas and tips for working with neckties in clothing here!

Rick Rack Ruby is a creative genius (in my opinion) and she generously shares this tutorial for how to create the cute necktie skirt shown here. I love the zig zag edge the ties create at the bottom!

Did You Know...

Did you know that striped neckties were originally designed to tell people what school young boys in uniform attended? The stripes were like a school flag, each on designed to identify their academic affiliation.

Dress It Up, Dress It Down

For a little inspiration, check out the Eco-friendly Inaugural Ball Gowns from Great Green Goods. Scroll down the page a bit past the other sample gowns to find a stunning necktie design that brings together color and long lines for a dress that flows. It definitely looks to me as if it's the most comfortable upcycle design on the page too.

If you want to know how to make your own dress almost entirely from neckties, here's a blue-ribbon winning Necktie Dress from "katvanlew" on Instructables. If you like what you see, click the download button at the top to unveil the complete how-to.

Planning a wedding? Here's your upcycled inspiration! The Brass Paper Clip features Wedding Gown Designs that are to die for in addition to resources where you could have gowns made if you do not want to take on the challenge yourself. Consider, if you will, the personal and intimate idea of collecting neckties from friends and family with which to create your wedding gown.

Not to be left out, the littles in our lives get a Toddler Skirt designed just for them. Craft Gossip shares this sweet little girl skirt that has a little bit of a bohemian feel, but on any toddler... is just as cute as can be.

Singer Sewing Machine

Tip:

Most of the tutorials that call for machine sewing with recommend using a zig-zag stitch. The zig-zag stitch allows your project some added flexibility and adds a decorative touch.

I desperately wish this were a tutorial because I have a denim skirt just waiting to be tranformed. I think I can figure it out with a little inspiration here from Deviant Art. Love these jeans with the little necktie peak at the bottom!

From Tops to Bottoms

Edgy! Sharp! Fun! These are just a few words that come to mind when I see this Dragon Tie Top from Amy Weis. The assembly looks elaborate and yet it's a fairly simple top with only three neckties showing on the front. I'm so curious to see the back!

Armed with only a t-shirt and a necktie, you can create an incredibly cute Necktie Cardigan. Many thanks to Refashion Co-op for sharing a complete tutorial for how to make it. I am looking forward to trying this one soon (I hope)!

For more fun with ties and tees, check out this Ruffled Necktie Tee Tutorial from McKell's Closet. Choose matching colors or contrast it up to update and up-style your upcycled wardrobe. The designer/author gives clear step-by-step instructions for how to do this project.

If you are looking for a way to dress a little girl up in one of daddy or grandpa's ties, here's a quick photo tutorial from B. jane brewing for a Preppy Princess T-Shirt. The necktie adds a sweet, colorful ruffle to a basic t-shirt. So cute!!

Upcycle Like You Mean It

In whatever article of clothing you choose to upcycle with neckties, wear it with pride. A necktie project - such as one of those listed on this page or one of your own design - tells people you are creative, confident and see value in the products that came before.

You can look at something used, see the future and make it happen!

@WiccanSage, I couldn't agree more. Shopping in thrift stores is really the only kind of shopping I like, and neckties make it even better. Thanks for stopping!

Mackenzie Sage Wright on September 22, 2014:

Hey, very cool. A necktie dress would look so great! I have to try that-- thank goodness for thrift shops.

@WindyWhirly, I agree. Necktie headbands are very cute, especially on little girls. That will be part of part 3 of this series when it's ready.

Davina Morris from USA on September 19, 2014:

as a Pinterest fan, I have seen old neckties used on headbands for girls. Is very cute! :-)
