A Mother's Day Craft
This coming Sunday is Mother's Day (May 13th) and I volunteered to go into my daughter's school to do a craft with the kids. The kids are aged 5 and 6, so I knew that I needed something fairly simple and easy, and definitely something that wouldn't take more than about a half-hour to complete. It needed to be affordable, seeing as I've also volunteered to foot the bill, and it had to be something that the kids could present to Mom as a gift on Sunday. And finally, it needed to be something that the boys would be just as interested in as the girls.
Well, nothing is perfect, so even if the boys may be a bit less enthused than the girls, I still feel like I've hit all the other targets.
Bracelets and Keychains
As a beading enthusiast, it seemed logical to stick to something I knew well. I bought some big, chunky, brightly-colored plastic beads and decided on offering the choice of the two crafts: a bracelet or a keychain. Then I chose a tub of colorful lettered beads, so that the kids could personalize their creations.
Words like "Mom", "Love", "From *child's name*" or even Mom's first name will all surely be popular. The only difficulty will arise if all the kids want the word "Mom"; I just don't have enough Ms!
I got some keychain hoops, some plastic cord and some stretchy jewellery cord and we're good to go.
I'll cut all the cord ahead of time, knot the ends and be as prepared as I can be.
- A coil of stretchy jewellery cord
- Some brightly-colored plastic cord
- Chunky beads
- Lettered beads
- Keyring hoops
To make the bracelet, simply string the beads onto the stretchy cord and knot the two ends together several times. To ensure that the knots do not come undone, I recommend adding a drop of clear glue over the knots and allowing a few minutes drying time before trimming the tails.
To make the keychain, loop an 8-or-so-inch piece of plastic cord through the keychain hoop and slide the beads over the two ends. Knot it so that the beads don't fall off.

I'm sure that the 5 and 6 year olds loved making these keychains and bracelets for their moms - and I'm sure their moms loved receiving them too! What a bright (and colorful and suited to young children) craft idea!

Giving gifts that you made yourself is really special.

Awesome ideas. I will have to pass this on to my friend, the mother of a five year old and a 3 year old. She will love this. :)
