What is Dyeing?

Textile dyeing is the process of application of color evenly on the textile (fiber, yarn, fabric, or even garment).

What are Dyeing Defects?

Defects that occur in the fabric during the operation of dyeing are called dyeing defects. Dyeing defects may occur due to many reasons such as the following:

  • The dyeing procedure did not take place properly
  • The fabric was not prepared properly before dyeing

Types of Dyeing Defects

Some types of dyeing defects are as follows:

  1. Barre
  2. Bleeding
  3. Crease Mark
  4. Crocking
  5. Cross Bar
  6. Dye Spot
  7. Fading
  8. Off Shade
  9. Shade Bar
  10. Shade Variation
  11. Stains
  12. Uneven Dyeing

Barre

Barre defect occurs in the fabric when off shaded yarns run from selvedge to selvedge after dyeing. The causes for this type of defect can be as follows -

  • Difference in the sizes of the weft yarn in the fabric
  • Difference in the fabric due to the variation in the tension of the warp or the weft yarns which leads to uneven uptake of the dye in the fabric

Bleeding

Bleeding defect occurs in the fabric when discoloration of the fabric occurs when it comes in contact with any liquid (like water). The liquid when it comes in contact with such a fabric, becomes colored and can affect the color of other fabrics when they come in contact with this liquid. The causes for this type of defect can be as follows -

  • The dye used for the process was not proper for the fabric
  • The dye had poor colorfastness for the fabric

Crease Mark

Crease mark defect occurs in the fabric when there is variation in the color of the fabric appearing as a crease on the fabric. The causes for this type of defect can be as follows -

  • The fabric, when in a rope form, was not released properly
  • The cooling of the fabric was not done properly

Crocking

Crocking defect occurs in the fabric when the color of the dyed fabric rubs off onto other fabrics easily. The causes for this type of defect can be as follows -

  • The scouring done at the end of the dyeing process was not done properly
  • There was insufficient penetration of the dye in the fabric

Cross Bar

Cross bar defect occurs in the fabric when some portions of the fabric material are not dyed causing a variation in the color of the fabric. The causes for this type of defect can be as follows -

  • During dyeing some other material may have settled on the surface of the fabric, which leads to that portion being not dyed

Dye Spot

Dye spot defect occurs in the fabric when there are spots on the surface of the fabric. The causes for this type of defect can be as follows -

  • The machine in which dyeing took place was not cleaned properly before dyeing, and there were some other colored deposits on the machine
  • The dye stuff was not properly mixed into the dye solution

Fading

Fading defect occurs in the fabric when the color of the fabric is lost due to exposure to various factors such as sunlight, cleansing materials, etc.

Off Shade

Off Shade defect occurs in the fabric when the color of the dyed fabric does not match the desired color of the fabric.

Shade Bar

Shade bar defect occurs in the fabric when there is a horizontal band of a different hue of the color running across the width of the fabric. The causes for this type of defect can be as follows -

  • The weft yarn used while weaving was changed during the process which was incidentally different from what was used earlier

Shade Variation

Shade variation defect occurs in the fabric when there is a difference in color of the fabric. This defect can occur both horizontally and vertically. The causes for this type of defect can be as follows -

  • The fabric was loaded with uneven tension during the dyeing process

Stains

Stain defect occurs in the fabric when there are discoloured spots in the fabric. The causes for this type of defect can be as follows -

  • Foreign materials such as dirt, oil, etc. settled on the surface of the fabric
Stains

Uneven Dyeing

Uneven dyeing defect occurs in the fabric when there is difference in the shade of the fabric through the width of the fabric. The causes for this type of defect can be as follows -

  • The fabric was not evenly pre-treated
  • The dyes were improperly fixated on the fabric
