I often buy GU desserts. These are small desserts which are sold in little glass ramekins. GU is the main brand available in the United Kingdom, but you can sometimes get other supermarket own brand desserts with similar glass ramekins as well.
If you are anything like me you will eat your cheesecake, or chocolate souffle and decide the little glass ramekin seems useful and keep it. They are indeed useful, but the problem is that over time (if you and your partner keep buying the puddings whenever they are on discount at the supermarket) you end up with more GU pots than you know what to do with!
Here are 15 easy things you can do with a GU pot.
Arts and Crafts projects
There are a variety of ways to use your GU pots for arts and crafts projects. You could do these as fun projects with children, or as with adults.
1. Water and paint pots
GU pots make excellent water pots or paint pots.
2. Decorate with different colours
Create interesting patterns with light by decorating GU pots with different colours.
You could use paint designed for glass, but another easy way to do this is to use Sharpie pens. The ink won't wipe off (not by accident anyway). Simple designs work well, for example below is a pot I decorated with green spots. Most Sharpie pens give a nice see through effect that allows light to shine through.
3. Decorate with stickers
Use stickers to decorate a GU pot. For example clear alphabet stickers create nice personalised pots.
4. Decorate with tissue paper
The GU pot below has been decorated using shredded pieces of tissue paper. I mixed some PVA glue with a bit of water and used a paint brush to stick the tissue paper to the side of the GU pot.
What to Do With Your Decorated GU Pot
Once you have decorated your GU pot, you need to find a use for it. For example you could make a candle holder or use them as storage for small bitty objects that you don't know where to put.
5. Brilliant Tealight Holders
GU pots make excellent tealight holders. This is an excellent and inexpensive way to make the most of your decorated GU pots. Just pop your tealight in the middle of the GU pot, light the tealight, dim the lights and enjoy the effect.
6. Make Actual Candles
If you want to put a bit more effort in you can also use GU pots to make proper candles. For example here is a great tutorial explaining how to make soy wax candles.
Storage For Small Bitty Things
Here are some examples of things that GU pots are useful for storing.
7. Storage for Small Annoying Toys that are Lying Around
8. Spare Change Storage
We use a GU pot for spare coins we find, and keeping them in one place.
9. Sewing Bits and Bobs Storage
Gu pots are exactly the right size to keep odds and ends of sewing stuff together while you are working on a sewing project.
10. Storage for Paper Clips
GU pots are also the perfect size for storing paper clips, or staples, or anything else small you have lying around.
Foodie GU Pot Ideas
The other main use of GU pots is for food. Here are some ideas for that.
11. Serve Lovely Homemade Dessert
Gu pots are excellent to serve impressive looking homemade desserts. For example you could make:
- A mini apple crumble (Look up any simple recipe for apple crumble, but reduce the sizes to fit in some GU pots)
- Eton mess (All you need to do is mix broken meringue, strawberries and whipped cream together)
- Creme brulee
- Chocolate Almond Cakes.
12. Serve Lovely Looking Not So Homemade Food
If the effort of preparing your own food is a bit much, you can use a GU pot to make your food special and romantic.
For example here is a recipe for chocolate mousse with berries.
- Chocolate mousse from the supermarket
- A pack of mixed berries (If berries aren't your thing you could substitute with chocolate chips, hundreds and thousands, pieces of banana, cream or anything else you like)
- Spoon the chocolate mousse into the GU pots.
- Add some berries on top in a way that looks nice.
You should bin all evidence of the origins of the mousse so your partner assumes you lovingly handmade the mousse. However even if your partner knows you well enough to see through this, it will still seem like you made much more effort than you did.
13. Food Preparation
GU pots are perfect to use as a little container when you need to mix together small amounts of spices for a recipe.
- Take 1 teaspoon of cumin, 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon and mix together in the GU pot
- Flavour some meat with the mix, and add a bit of lemon or lime
- Cook to make a lovely tasty dish with very little effort.
14. Serving Condiments
If you are having a dinner party and want to impress, Gu pots can be useful for condiments.
Use a Gu pot for extra sophistication, when serving sauces, salsa or ketchup.
GU pots are also useful as sugar bowls. Serve alongside the tea so your guests can help themselves.
15. Give them away
There may come a time when you have done all the above things, but you still have too many GU pots taking up space. At that point It's time to let go (of some of them, a few in stock is useful)
I suggest giving away GU pots, either to family and friends, or by offering on a Freecycle or a Facebook group. They will be useful to someone else.
You could also try and sell them. I have noticed GU pots for sale on Ebay and Etsy, but it doesn't look like lots of people are buying them, so personally I wouldn't bother.

Thanks... I love these little mason jars (what I have been calling them). I use them for chia puddings but like the cheat idea you mentioned for using them to make up desserts with store-bought fillers and berries. Attractive photos!
