"Sub-Zero to Sixty" Altoids Mints
Stanley "Mouse" Miller was a child of the fifties growing up in Detroit, where Stanley spent his days drawing and his nights under the sheets listening to the Devils own R&B, absorbing the music and developing and adolescent crush for what would be later dubbed as the Kustom Kulture.
Stanley was expelled from Mackenzie High School, Michigan in 1956 for trying his hand as a graffiti artist, where he mischievously repainted the facade at "The Box", a popular restaurant and school hang-out right across the street from Mackenzie High. Stanley would finish his formal education at the Detroit's Society of Arts and Crafts
Mouse learned how to use an airbrush early on and soon found himself immersed in the Hot Rod culture, pin-striping and detailing cars and within the support of his family he started Mouse Studios, a mail order T-shirt business where he sold air-brushed Hot Rod "Weirdo" shirts, that which he also took on the road where he sold his wares at places like the State Fair or Midwestern Hot Rod Shows and Drag Strips, which is how he met Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, a meeting Mouse surely would not forget. Roth "borrowed" some of Mouses designs including the Fred Flypogger character and turned him into his iconic Rat Fink, The two characters are so close that the word similarities is inadequate. This has since been confirmed by Steve Fiorilla from the Ed Roth Stable of artists who illustrated Roth's catalog at the time.
Mouse Studios sold several products mail order but mostly custom T-Shirts and Sweatshirts with Hot Rod Monster Art where you could choose from hundreds of Mouse original designs or have a custom design adorn your shirt.

"Hittin' On Nothing"
The Detroit Cobras 2004 Tour Poster
This is a fantastic Stanley Mouse Poster which merges the the Detroit Cobras deep rooted classis with the "lowbrow" Kustom Kulture art of the period. The Detroit Cobras were formed in 1995 by Steve Shaw and was one of the earliest groups to emerge from the Detroit garage rock scene. The Detroit Cobras developed a reputation as the Midwest's finest and most distinctive cover bands where instead of cycling through established hits, the Detroit Cobras dug deep into the well of vintage R&B and primitive rock & roll sides, building an individual identity out of lost classics from the past which they modified to fit their swaggering aural personality.

I agree Michael that "Mouse" was a master of his art and a true influence on the Kustom Kulture scene, although I purchased some T-shirts from magazine ads I never had the chance to see him in person. I do believe Mad Magazine had an influence on all of us and Stanley must have surely drew from this and many other compelling forces of the time....Thanks for the comment -- Cheers !!

I saw Stanely airbrushing at a car show at the Light Guard Armory on 8Mi. in Detroit. I'd been drawing and painting shirts myself,..but now I saw "the Master" at work! I realized there was a larger level of art that I had to learn. We both had been influenced by Mad Magazine, especially the incredible Mad artists in the Mad pocket anthologies. I believe Mad is the father of Hot Rod Art.

Thanks mckbirdbks -- Stanley Mouse was a key influence in the lowbrow art of the early Kustom Kulture scene and later a pioneer in the psychedelic dance posters of the sixties and continues to forge on to this day with his most recent work being The Grateful Deads' "Fare Thee Well Tour" 2015 -- Keep It In the Groove !!

I sent this link over to Facebook. Maybe some more people will roll in. This brought back memories. I have often thought there might be some money in finding these very type of art on the old album covers and framing them for all of us 'older' fans.
