Sketching Live Tutorial

Design Sketching

Often, I visit Art Design Schools and several times I find interesting presentation projects but poor sketches. In some cases, I see design projects developped with a very good quality including excellent sketch books.

In car design education the training process is a must.

We need practice to sketch well a product or a car .

Unfortunately, lately, design students do not pay too much attention to this aspect for their career training, they are more concentrated to illustrate with Photoshop jumping an essential step: drawing free hand practice.

I remember that ,when I was a student at Art Center College of Design, to have a sketch book was a must starting from the very first day. Having a sketch book with you means you sketch everyday.

It is probably the best method and discipline to exercise and gain that self confidence drawing.

Line Quality

Top Design Schools & Methods

Pforzheim University of Applied Science, Art Center College of Design, UMEA University Sweden, STRATE Paris, CCS Detroit, Royal College College of Art, IAAD Turin are some of the top Design schools where it is mandatory to start learning by drawing and sketching and by having a sketch book to feed regularly. The sketch book is periodicly checked by instructors and it is part of final evaluation, in this way the design student gets into a strict method which gives him/her the opportunity to learn discipline and how to get better and improve his/her skills.

A car sketch is not an easy task to accomplish, if you do not know how to draw a cube with his shadows perspective and chiaro-scuro you probably will never arrive to produce a professional convincing car sketch. Industrial Design schools should always force student to produce a lot of sketches and mostly force them to re-do every time, it is necessary to learm from mistakes. To re-do a sketch often provokes a sort of technical memory in the student's head which will prevent him to remake the same error again. This is one of the basic rules for a correct Car Design Training, however it can be applied to all art and design trainings and in every art design school, industrial design schools and Transportation Design schools.

Practicing Everyday is the Key

It is obvious that to reach a certain level we must put some constant effort, so if we want to produce excellent line quality sketches we need to practice first how we hold and use our color pencil or ball point pen.

In my video tutorial "Sketching Together Live" I show the exercises to make at home and repeat several times to get familiar with: the balance between holding the pencil correctly, using our arm mouvement and the pressure we should apply on paper with our pencil.

It is really a combination of those three things that, if well done, will give us a very good line quality to our car sketches or product sketches.

Check the video to discover.

Sketching in Side View

My strong suggestion to all art and design students or amateurs of any type of art design school is to sketch sketch sketch. Do you want to be the best? Sketch it. Do you want to learn seriously to draw from a TV set to a complex car interior? Sketch it. Do you want to learn how to do Figure drawing? Sketch it. Mileage is the key, don't think that few sketches and a final rendering is good for your homework, please do not get this attitude because you'll go nowhere. Be demanding, be serious study well drawing basics, train yourself, forget feeling too tired to continue. It is not just a job, it is about your passion and future, then try always to become the best because competition out there is very high and no matter how good looking will be your digital Photoshop illustration if the perspective and the base sketch is not at the right level!

Sketch it! Have always with you your sketch book it will become soon your best friend.

Hi there! This tutorial looks like it's a nice one, but it does not work for a deaf inddiivual. Written tutorials are better suited, but no one wants to take the time to do that. Oh well!

Great article. Often we can be in such a rush to get onto the computer, and ignore the sketchbook. It is easy to think that a programme like photoshop will correct bad sketching, but it is not the case. Some of the best student work I have seen were the thumbnail sketches in a sketch book; a joy to look at. The process of arriving at a final idea can be as interesting as the final idea itself.

Some students have asked me which type of computer they should get when starting their design studies. I answer that a pen, sketchbook and a cool grey marker are the first things on any shopping list.

Great post as always. I agree, Sketching is an import skill to have. When Luciano says sketch he means SKETCH! You should practice sketching 200 sketches a day and that is the minimum too.
