Seamless Yellow Baby Sweater Dress. Free Knitting Pattern!

I love to knit but I prefer seamless knitting. It makes me more comfortable to knit. When I start to knit, I avoid seams as much as I can because it looks like a kind of challenge for me. Moreover, the idea of knitting in the round instead of seaming is a plus point of interesting. Perfect seaming techniques can make knitting staff looks no-seam but it is better to avoid for beginners.

This seamless yellow baby sweater dress is mostly used flat knitting and a little bit knitting in the round for short sleeves of the yellow part. I used 100% cotton yarn for this sweater dress and decorated with cables. I also added how-to knit cables videos for beginners' handy. Enjoy your knit and have fun!

Pattern Instructions

Skills needed:

Knit and Purl Stitches

Increases and Decreases

Cables and Lace Stitches

Size: 12 to 24 months

Finished Chest: 21 inches (54 cm)

Finished Length: 14.5 inches (37 cm)

Gauge: 20 sts x 31 rows = 4 in x 4 in (10 cm x 10 cm) in Stocking sts with US4 (3.5 mm) needle

Suggested Yarn: Category 4 Medium Worsted Weight

Yarn shown in pictures: 100% Cotton, Lily Sugar’n Cream, Yellow 150 yds and White 150 yds

Needles and notions:

US3/ UK10/ 3.25 mm needles (straight or circular)

US4/ UK9/ 3.5mm needles (straight or circular)

Set of US4/UK9/ 3.5mm double pointed needles

Stitch markers, Stitch holders or Waste yarns

Cable needle, Yarn needle and 5 small buttons

Abbreviations:

K = Knit, P = Purl, YO = Yarn Over

K2tog = Knit two together, P2tog = Purl two together

Pfb = Purl the front of a stitch, then purl the back of the same stitch

C4F = Put 2 stitches on your cable needle and hold in front of your work, knit the next 2 stitches and then knit the two from your cable needle

C4B = Put 2 stitches on your cable needle and hold in back of your work, knit the next 2 stitches and then knit the two from your cable needle

PM = place marker, SM = slip marker

Let's start.

By using US3/ UK10/ 3.25 mm needle, cast on 84 sts with Yellow.

Neckline (Garter sts)

Rows 1-3: Knit.

Row 4 (1^st button hole row): Knit to last 4 sts., K1, YO, K2tog, K1.

Rows 5-8: Knit.

Divide body and sleeves with markers.

Change to US4/ UK9/ 3.5mm needles and white yarn.

Row 9 (Wrong Side): K4 (button band), P12 (left front), PM, P14 (left sleeve), PM, P24 (back), PM, P14 (right sleeve), PM, P12 (right front), K4 (button band).

Row 10 (Right Side): K4, P2, K4, P5, Pfb, SM, Pfb, P1, K4, P2, K4, P1, Pfb, SM, Pfb, K4, P2, K4, P2, K4, P2, K4, Pfb, SM, Pfb, P1, K4, P2, K4, P1, Pfb, SM, Pfb, P5, K4, P2, K4. (92 sts)

Row 11: K4, Knit all knit sts, purl all purl sts and slip markers to the last 4 sts, K4.

Row 12: K4, Knit all knit sts, purl all purl sts and Pfb before and after markers to the last 4 sts, K4. Slip all markers.(100 sts)

Row 13: Repeat Row 11.

Row 14: K4, P2, C4F, *(purl all purl sts, Pfb before and after marker and slip marker, then purl all purl sts), C4F, P2, C4B, repeat *, C4F, P2, C4F, P2, C4B, P2, C4B, repeat *, C4F, P2, C4B, repeat *, C4B, P2, K4. (108 sts)

Row 15:Repeat Row 11.

Row 16:Repeat Row 12. (116 sts)

Row 17:Repeat Row 11.

Row 18:Repeat Row 12. (124 sts)

Row 19:Repeat Row 11.

Row 20 (2^nd button hole row): Repeat Row 14 to last 4 st., end with K1, YO, K2tog, K1. (132 sts)

Repeat Row 15 to 20 to reach the stitches up to 212 sts OR Row 40 and except Row 36 (3^rd button hole row).

For Row 36 (3^rd button hole row): Repeat Row 14 to last 4 st., end with K1, YO, K2tog, K1.

Row 41:(WS) Repeat Row 11.

Separate body and sleeves with stitch holders.

Row 42:(RS) Knit all knit sts and purl all purl sts for 31 sts, remove marker, place 47 sts on a holder, remove marker, knit all knit sts and purl all purl sts for 56 sts, remove marker, place 47 sts on a holder, remove marker, knit all knit sts and purl all purl sts for 31 sts. (118 sts will be on the needle.)

Body

Row 43: K4, Knit all knit sts, purl all purl sts to the last 4 sts, K4.

Row 44: K4, P2, C4F, P38, C4F, P2, C4F, P2, C4B, P2, C4B, P38, C4B, P2, K4.

Rows 45 to 49: Repeat Row 43.

Row 50: Repeat Row 44.

Row 51: Repeat Row 43.

Row 52 (4^th button hole row): K4, Knit all knit sts, purl all purl sts to the last 4 sts, end with K1, YO, K2tog, K1.

Rows 53 to 55: Repeat Row 43.

Waist Band

Change to Yellow Color.

Row 56 (RS): K4, P2, C4F, P2, K36, C4F, K2, C4F, K2, C4B, K2, C4B, K36, P2, C4B, P2, K4.

Row 57 (WS): K6, P4, K to last 10 sts, end with P4, K6.

Row 96: Repeat Row 94.

Row 98: (RS) Repeat Row 92.

Row 100: Repeat Row 94.

Row 104: Bind off knit-wise on knit sts and purl-wise on purl sts.

Sleeves

Transfer 47 stitches from a holder onto three US4/ UK9/ 3.5mm double pointed needles. 15 sts onto 1^st needle, 17 sts onto 2^nd needle and 15 sts onto 3^rd needle. For 1^st and 3^rd needles, pick up 1 more stitch each from underarm to avoid any gap. Tie yellow color yarn at the middle of underarm and work garter stitch 8 rows in the round and bind off.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Securely sew 5 small buttons to avoid choking hazard.

Me again regarding Row 14. Why are the cables not all paired as F & B? The second repeat is for two c4f, followed by two c4b, not

matching a f and b. Also, how many repeats for each and total number of cables? I counted 10 on the picture, but at this point, I am not sure of anything. I am trying very hard to knit this for my great grand daughter, but after starting over 3 times, I am ready to give up if my issues are not addressed. Thank you.

Hi Chomphoo, you are absolutely right. It has an error when I count the times. In Row 63, the times should be 9. For Row 64, the times should be 10. Thanks for telling me. I already corrected in the instructions. Take a look.

if i count all stitches will be 127 sts.

and for the next row is,

Hi Carters, If your gauge is 5 sts per inches, US size 5 or 6 is OK for the pattern.

Caters on October 12, 2014:

I have knitted with size 3 and 4 needles using worsted weight yarn and it ends up really tight despite the thick yarn because of small needles. Because of this the minimum size I ever use for worsted weight it size 5.

My gauge for US 5-8(maybe up to 9 or 10) is 5 sts per inch.

Given this will the dress still be 12-24 months if I use size 5 needles or size 6?

Hi pradnya, You are right. Just purl on the wrong side. Pfb is for incresing 1 st. No need to increase again on the wrong side.

I love the little white & yellow dress but I am having a problem. When I add stitches the neat side ends up on the WS of the dress and also where it should be smooth knitted side it is WS again. I have done a lot of knitting but this one has me flabbergasted. I have done it 8 times and it always turns out the same and I rip it out again. Please HELP!!!!
