Watercolor Artist Paul Jackson

Paul C. Jackson, AWS

A prolific and profound artist, Paul Jackson is one of America's greatest contemporary watercolorists. In all catagories, landscapes and cityscapes, portraits, architectural, still life and the just plain wonderous, Paul puts genuine spirit and life, as well as artistic planning and finesse, into every painting. The powerful results in each work make an immediate and spectacular impact.

Born in Lawrence Kansas , raised in Starkville Mississippi , Jackson began painting in college at Mississippi State University . In 1992 he received a Master's in Fine Art from the University of Missouri . Since then his artwork has received top honors in national and international competitions, and graced the covers of dozens of magazines and books.

Paul was honored by the American Watercolor Society with signature membership at the age of 30. He is also a Signature member of the National Watercolor Society. Paul was the Grand Prize winner in the "Paint Your Way to Paris " competition and has been featured as one of the Master Painters of the World in International Artists Magazine.

Jackson's artwork has been on the cover of the Artist's magazine four times in recent years. Other media featuring Jackson 's work include: American Artist, Watercolor magazine, Watercolor Magic, Watercolor Artist, Forbes Magazine, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, NPR, CBS News, The Baltimore Sun, The St Louis Post, The Kansas City Star, and TWA's Ambassador Magazine.

Many of Paul's works hangs in private collections, but you can see some examples on display in museums and public buildings.

Although Paul Jackson has an unequalled passion for watercolor, his creative genius has not been limited. In 2001, Jackson unveiled a 30' diameter tiger mosaic on the University of Missouri campus. Paul led hundreds of volunteers in assembling more than 420,000 Italian glass tiles for the project. Jackson 's painting, "Not Exactly Front Row Center" was recreated as the stage design for the musical "Porterphiles" at the York theatre in NYC. Paul has also thrice designed Easter eggs for the White House and he designed the Missouri Commemorative State Quarter for the United States Mint.

In 2008, Jackson was the featured speaker at the International Watercolor Masters Invitational in Lushan , China , during the Olympic Games. In 2009 he served as the invited juror for the American Watercolor Society's 142nd annual international exhibition.

Local watercolor artist invited to exhibit in China

Two provinces away from Beijing, one of the most heated battles of the summer will be fought behind a canvas. Watercolor artists from around the world are converging at Lu Mountain, China, to compete in an open-air painting showdown.

Jackson

Among them will be local artist Paul Jackson, who leaves for the Invitational Exhibition of Contemporary International Watermedia Masters Aug. 6. The event run from Aug. 11 through Aug. 21, roughly the same time as the Olympic Games in Beijing.

The event is billed as a showcase of 20 of the world's top painters and a "plein-air" painting competition. Jackson will be the only American to compete. Two others were invited - Don Andrews of Fairhope, Ala., and Z.L. Fang, a professor at Radford University in Virginia - but neither plans to attend.

Jackson said he was counting on Fang, a friend who is from China, to help with the language barrier. Now he must settle for Mandarin and Cantonese translators on his iPhone. "The whole adventure just got a shot of adrenaline and is a bit more intimidating now," he said. "It made me a little more nervous, but I'm still very excited."

A watercolor titled "Pilgrimage" by local artist Paul Jackson is among those he will exhibit at a show in China next month.

Jackson will be taking along three works to be displayed at the exhibit, all showing architectural painting. He also will give a speech at the opening dinner; he joked that he hopes his Southern dialect might confuse his translator and take up time.
