I live in Houston and love writing reviews of the local restaurants and stores I visit with family and friends.
Anyone driving in downtown Houston in the 1300 block of McKinney is sure to notice the eye-catching Pandr Murals. The six paintings are easy to see along one side of the building near the Shops at Houston Center. The graphics murals demonstrate the pride of hometown Houston, the friendly people who reside here who welcome and greet others, plus pride in the entire State of Texas!
My husband and I were on a mission to photograph many of the murals in Houston's downtown area. That is quite the lofty goal because there are many of them, and new ones keep cropping up in old and new places. With luck, occasionally, we can see celebrated artists creating new works of street art. They come from nearby locations, plus those from around the globe.
These bright and friendly Pandr murals have greeted passersby since early 2018. Whether walking or driving past them, they can serve to brighten even the cloudiest of days with their arresting colors and graphic messages.
The largest owner of commercial real estate in downtown Houston is Brookfield Properties. They have been in business for over 120 years and operate globally. They have over 600 properties worldwide, according to their website. They are the ones that commissioned these artful murals spurring on their name recognition, all while helping to beautify Houston.
People from Brookfield Properties had also transformed the inside of the Allen Center lobby and the Shops at Houston Center. These eye-catching murals were like putting a stamp on an envelope or frosting onto a cake to complete the project.
It is admirable when corporations take on the mantle of civic responsibility and take into consideration artistry in addition to their bottom line profits. Many cities mandate a certain percentage of a business's budget for doing that as a condition of operating in their localities.
The overall effect can be winsome, inviting, and sometimes even inspirational. The graphic mural (on view below) invites people to "dream big." That is a message that can be beneficial to incorporate into one's psyche.
Below are five inspirational quotes about dreaming big.
“Dare to dream big dreams. For those are the dreams that have the power to push your whole world forward.” – Ralph Martson.
“Always dream and shoot higher than you know you can do. Don’t bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself.” – William Faulkner.
“We will only grow as big as we dream, that’s why we must dream big.” – Gabrielle Williams.
“No matter how small you start, always dream big.” – Stephen Richards
“Dream big, because dreams do happen.” – Alex Morgan
Pandr Design Company
The company employed to create these murals is Pandr Design Co., located in San Diego, California. It consists of two co-founders, Roxy Prima and Phoebe Cornog, plus the person in charge of business development, Shanley Houk. Their signage on each mural undoubtedly propels them forward onto new projects. It is an eye-catching advertisement for them as well as Brookfield Properties.
Roxy and Phoebe host a weekly podcast titled Drunk on Lettering. These artists know what they are doing! The colors that they utilize as well as the wording pack a powerful punch!
More Murals Inside!
Along with the six outdoor murals, there are two indoor ones in the underground food court space. The wording on those two are the following: "CHEERS HOUSTON" and "This IS the PLACE."
Those of us who live in Houston know it as an amiable city. Being able to enjoy the outside sunshine for most of the year probably helps. Our parks, museums, restaurants, places of worship, tourist attractions, public art, and other amenities add to the joy of living here.
Our downtown space lures many suburbanites back into the city to live and easily enjoy the downtown entertainment venues.
These Pandr murals speak volumes with a minimum of words. Don't you agree?
Are you one of the many people who have noticed these murals and taken photos of them? Many people have used this hashtag in their social media posts: #madeinHOU, and I will be one of them!
I hope that you enjoyed learning about these colorful murals on as well as inside the Allen Center.
