Origami: How To Make A Nodding Dog In 5 Minutes

This hub will teach you how to make a simple nodding dog out of paper. Make sure you follow the instructions and fold with precise creases, because the nodding action of the dog will depend on how sharp the foldings are.

You will need two square-shaped pieces of paper. It's good to use colored paper if you have it.

I don't have colored paper so I will just use two white sheets with printing on one side to make the head and the body.

If you have colored paper use the one with the predominant color first to make the body of the dog.

You can read the instructions below and look at the corresponding images to help you. Also, there is a video at the end of the tutorial that walks you through the process of creating this nodding dog.

How to make a nodding dog through simple steps.

α Fold and unfold the paper for the body diagonally in half in both directions, then blintz fold all four corners to the center to produce a piece similar to the one shown in the image.

Blintz is a Ukrainian pancake folded with all its corners to the center to contain some filling.

β Fold the model diagonally in half to look like the one in the picture.

γ Fold the right corner over to the left making sure the lower edge stays level with itself. This creates a simple tail for the dog.

δ This completes the body of the dog. Stand the body up.

ε Now let's create the head. Begin with the second square predominant color face down. Fold in half side-to-side then fold the two upper corners down to lie on the center line.

ζ Fold the two triangular flaps upward and outward. Make the horizontal edges in alignment with the sloping edges.

η Now fold up the lower edge to a point a few millimeters above where the two triangular flaps meet along the center line creating the eyes.

θ Form the nose by folding the top point down about 1/3 of the distance from the horizontal edge to the tip.

ι Mountain fold the head in half along the vertical center line with the eyes of the dog remaining on the outside.

How to use the nodding dog model.

At the top if the body there is a sharp point. Balance the dog's head on this point.

Make sure the point goes up about the center of the head. You can use a pin to make the head stay that way.

Now, you can gently push down on the nose to make the dog nod it's head up and down.

I used to love making things with paper. You have inspired me to give it a try again. Your instructions are really clear, maybe I can handle it.

I once knew how to do this but forgot so thanks for reminding me again. I can make a shirt out of a dollar bill though - if I had a dollar bill.

I must say I gave it my best shot, but I'm simply too tired to do it properly..

I'll come back tomorrow and try again, but with a larger piece of paper :)

Another interesting idea, my friend!
