Why Choose a Leather Journal?

Keeping a journal has become more popular, I think, because we all crave something that is not a gadget or wirelessly connected. It doesn't require a password and is accessible at all times.

It can be used to explore memories and events of your life. It can be a place to rant, praise, lament, rage, love, create, record and express feelings right across the spectrum of human emotion.

There is something very satisfying in handling and writing in a leather bound journal. Besides the obvious advantages of being tough and long-lasting, a leather book is special; if you use it daily and carry it with you, it almost becomes a friend.

A leather journal also makes a beautiful and personal gift for a loved one.

Inside Your Journal

It is important that you choose a journal with the right paper. Many journals have thin, lined paper, which is not suitable for 'rugged' content. However, if you only intend on writing on your pages, then this paper will do fine. It also provides a smooth surface to write on. However, if you want to add sketches or collage, or embellish the pages in any way, you'll need thicker paper. Cartridge paper is suitable for drawing, writing and pen & ink sketching. If you want to use watercolor or even acrylic paints, then go for watercolor paper.

Journals Aren't Just for Writing In

Your journal can be used to write, of course, but it can also used to sketch, paint and collage. No-one has to see it; it can be anything you want it to be. Paste in mementoes, tickets, photos, quotations, clippings and whatever else can be glued onto a page.

Pretty soon, your journal will acquire a pleasing 'fatness'. It will become slightly worn, perhaps a little scuffed... and it will all the better for it. It gains character and absorbs lots of yours. Love your journal and it will love you back.

Well Bev, you've inspired me to start journaling.. I'll have to wait on the leather-bound, though.. maybe Mother's Day I'll get lucky :)

Bev G (author) from Wales, UK on February 20, 2018:

Hey Shirley, these days all my written journalling is done on my laptop :( However, I keep my posh journals for art and inspiring ideas. I journal most days. It's a great place to rant :)

I'd love to have a leather-bound journal, but my problem is making time to write in it everyday. Does anyone set aside a certain time everyday to write in one, or do you just write when you feel the need?

The art of leather bookbinding is a timeless tradition in Italy. That's why you can find so many versions of the same journals. In our workshop the entry one is called "Medioevalis" and is very popular. I like it especially for the long lace because it embraces my personal notes, softly.

The Lama Li Classic Leather Journal is one of my favorite journals. Do you know if they sell a journal similar to that one that has refillable paper options? Thanks.

Bev G (author) from Wales, UK on September 24, 2010:

Yes, me too. Mine isn't a wrap-around like that one. I've put it on my Christmas wishlist! xx

The journal in the intro is splendid! I'd like to have one like that!
