Traditional ponchos

What Are Ponchos?

A poncho is designed to keep the body warm and or to keep one dry during the rain.

Ponchos are usually made up of a large single sheet of a woolen fabric or blanket, with an opening in the center for the head .

Ponchos are now created not only for warmth but as a fashion statement. The shape remains the same, but is now made of different materials. Often they are made of wool or other types of yarn and they are either knitted or crocheted.

So in short the poncho is a clothing design, somewhere between a shawl and a coat. Ponchos wrap the persons upper body, both front and back, with an opening for the head. The poncho has no sleeves, the arms simply protrude from under the body of the poncho. Ponchos often times are made with hoods. If the pattern does call for a hood, it is either added to the finished neckline or knitted as part of one of the panels.
