What is Sure Cuts A Lot 2?
Sure Cuts A Lot 2 (SCAL) is a software that can be used specifically with the Cricut Expression, Cricut Personal, Cricut Create, and Cricut Cake Machines. This software will allow you to create images and fonts without having to buy all those expensive cartridges. In order to use this software you may have to update your firmware on your machine. If that is necessary this software will walk you through the steps of how to do that for free. I purchased my copy from ETSY.com and paid $24.99. It can also be purchased off of ebay and craftedge.com. Seeing as how most of the Cricut cartridges are at least $25 each and you are limited by what material is on the cartridge to what types of projects you can make this is a cheap and easy option. This is not a Cricut brand software so there is the possibility of this voiding your 1 year warranty. However, if you're like me and purchased your machine used then that won't be an issue. In this article I will go with you step by step on how to install and use this software.
Step 1- Installation
Once you insert the disk into your computer a pop-up box will open telling you to run the set-up file and follow the prompts.
After the prompts have been installed you can begin to use the software.
If your firmware on your Cricut machine needs to be updated SCAL will walk you through the process of how to update that for free! When you turn your Cricut on it will say on the screen if it's 1.0 or 1.2 for example; this is how you will now if it needs to be updated. The entire process from update to install was 15 minutes.
Step 2: Create
This software has many different options of how you can create. You can change your font and even insert saved images. Simply use the pad on the screen that resembles your cricut keypad or your keyboard and start designing. You can also cut in layers if you need to do several colors. You can use downloaded fonts and other SVG images. There are also some generic images in the software for basic projects. It has some scrollwork, shapes, floral, and animals just to list a few.
Step 3: Cutting
When you're done with your design you will need to prep your machine. Turn your machine on, apply your paper to your mat making sure it's lined up properly, and insert the mat into the machine and push the load paper button on your Cricut machine. Make sure your pressure and depth are set properly depending on the type of material you're using (if you're using vinyl the depth and pressure will need to be set as deep as it can go). When you have everything set you just push the "cut" button in your software. Your machine should start cutting. To unload the mat just push the unload paper button on your Cricut machine.
Step 4: Start Crafting
Now that you have endless possibilities at your fingertips you can craft away. I recommend using the Cricut spatula to remove your items from the mat.

I have a Cricut Expression and SCAL2 but both have been put aside for about 6-7 years. I never learned to use SCAL. Is there support out there for beginners? and recommended sites for svg files

Hey I have a cricut personal running firmware 1.45v and I use SCAL 2?
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on April 27, 2017:
I've only worked with version 2. I'm not sure what difference there is between 1 and 2. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Tammy on April 26, 2017:
Do you have to have version 1 or 2 of surecuts?
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on February 06, 2017:
You can only have it installed on 2 computers. Once the serial number has been used twice you can no longer use it. You'll have to purchase an new one unfortunately.
cindy on February 04, 2017:
I purchased my cricut create and bought the SCAL 8 years ago, I had it on my pc and a lap top, I got a new pc and also my lap top broke so now I downloaded my scal onto my new pc and its asking for the name and serial number which I typed in correctly but its stating that its not correct. How do I add it to my new computer?
mhnavarre on December 02, 2016:
I have the Cricut Expression and the SCAL2. I read in one of the comments above that you could set it up to cut in layers using different colors. How is this done or where can I find the instructions.

Does SCAL, any version, work with the Expression 2?
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on October 18, 2016:
I've only worked with SCAL2 and I know it only works with the older machines. I haven't worked with SCAL4 so I can't attest to whether or not it will work with the expression. Sorry for not being much help. Once you find out I; and some of the readers, would love to know the answer. Thanks for reading!
James on October 18, 2016:
My apologies! called you Adam and realized Adams is your last name and you are a she not a he! Will SCAL 4 work with expression? Or only SCAL v2 or older. If only SCAL v2 Do you know of any Mac versions? Thanks!
James327 on October 18, 2016:
Hey Adam can SCAL 4 be used with Cricut Expression or does it have to be SCAL 2? Want to make sure before I purchase the newest version. Thanks You!
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on October 06, 2016:
This software can only be used with the older machines as it was discontinued several years ago. Thanks!

Can you use SCAL with a cricut explore air?
Kathy on May 21, 2016:
I just purchased a used Cricut Personal. When I try to cut using SCAL2 it says checking mat size and will not move beyond that. I am using the corre t firmware. Any suggestions?
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on January 08, 2016:
The cricut expression is compatible with this software. The machine will be hooked up to your computer and once the software is downloaded you can import svg files and cut with your machine. The software gives you instructions on how to use it.
jojo on January 07, 2016:
I still don't know how to import pictures from my computer to the cricut expression
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on December 30, 2015:
The expression 2 is not compatible with this software. That machine was created after this software was discontinued. To my knowledge there is no software similar that can be used with the newer machine. There are other brands of die-cut machines that use similar software if at any point you are looking to switch away from Cricut. There is no way to downgrade your software that i know of.
Sara Lee on December 29, 2015:
I read the comments and now i'm confused. Can I use SCAL2 with my E2 ? My E2 is about 6 months old.
Sara on December 02, 2015:
I got the Cricut Personal and its running Firmwart 1.45V and from my understanding I can only use SCAL2 with the older Firmware, can I downgrade?
Samantha on November 28, 2015:
This machine is only compatible with the older machines and unfortunately can not be used with the explorer. This software was discontinued before the explorer was released so it is not compatible.

Can I sue SCAL with Cricut Explore?
Kathy J in Ellicott City on October 31, 2015:
Hi, Hope you can answer my question. I purchased my SCAL for my old expression machine this summer and have had no trouble getting both the software and the cutting to work. Last weekend, I updated to Windows 10 and now the software works, but the cutting hangs up. It starts and then just hangs and never cuts. I tried reinstalling the driver and also the software, but it still is not working. Any suggestions? Thanks for any information you can give me.
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on August 21, 2015:
Joy, yes this software will work with SVG. Shelli, i just updated mine as well and it is working fine.
Shelligaede on August 21, 2015:
My computer was just updated to Windows 10. Do you think SCAL2 program will work with it?
Joy Chagnard on August 02, 2015:
I just purchased a Cricut expressions 2 from a friend and I am new to this.will my machine work with SVG files?
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on March 10, 2015:
Sorry for the wait...You leave one cartridge in at all times just to make it function but it will cut based on what you send it from the computer.
Robyn d on February 18, 2015:
This may be a dumb question, but how do you load the mat without a cartridge?
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on February 14, 2015:
I honestly don't know why. Mine has never done that. Now if I try to cut out cursive words I have to use the weld option to make it one word and not individual letters. Not sure if that helps at all. Sorry.
Lori on February 14, 2015:
I have cricut expression and sure cuts a lot2. I purchased my sure cuts a lot about 8 years ago so it should work with my machine which is about the same age. When I try to cut a stensil with sure cuts a lot I keep getting cut lines going across my stensil. Any idea why
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on January 07, 2015:
The software does not work with most of the newer machines. It was discontinued so all of the newer equipment is not compatible.
Laura on January 06, 2015:
If I buy a new expression will it work with scal2? I have it now with my personal cricut but I want the bigger one.
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on November 13, 2014:
You can use sure cuts a lot with any SVG along with your cricut. Just import and create!

I bought SCAL2 to use with my Cricut Expression. I want to make rhinestone templates for my embroidery designs. I have a site that says the files are in SVG format and can be used with a die cutter. I am assuming this means woth any brand of machine. Can I import the svg file through SCAL2 and send it to my Cricut Expression and cut away or do I need another machine?
Tammy on September 08, 2014:
Thanks for writing me back, just so confused on which one to buy , after reading some other post, wish cricut had a monogram one then I could just buy it, it's the most popular ,thanks again
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on September 08, 2014:
I don't know of any software for the newer machines; cricut pretty much put a stop to it when people weren't having to buy new cartridges for everything. There are other machines out their that use software like this; it just depends on how much you're going to use it to make it worth your money.
Tammy on September 08, 2014:
I have a cricut expression 2 and I'm trying to get the monograming letters, is there any software you can buy to get them, or do I have to buy another machine, if I have to get another machine which is the best machine, please help, don't know what to do
ashlee on September 07, 2014:
Ok thank you so much!!
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on September 07, 2014:
It will give you step-by-step instructions on how to update the firmware for free if it's needed.

I was wanting to purchase this software on Etsy I am assuming its from the same seller you bought it from, My cricut expressions firm ware is 2.0 but it needs to be 2.1 or higher.. correct? I just wanted to make sure if I bought the program that It would upgrade the firmwware for me when I set it up. Thanks for the help!
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on August 31, 2014:
This software is only compatible with the older machines and unfortunately is not compatible with the expression 2 or the explorer. They have discontinued the production of this software and never made it for the newer generation cricuts but there are plenty of them still available for sale by people who stocked up on them before they were discontinued. (The link that I have listed on the Hub is a genuine copy and not a reproduction. It comes with a serial # which allows you to use this for up to two different computers.)
mara on August 31, 2014:
Can you use this with an expression 2?? Trying to find a way to cut Svg files without upgrading to an explore and paying more money within 6 months of buying the expression 2!! Thanks
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on August 24, 2014:
I don't think it will bridge anything like that; there's a weld option which will keep cursive items as one large piece. The best way to do what you're wanting is to get some transfer tape and use that to pull the die cut off the cutting mat and move it to your final location without disrupting the spacing of any items. They commonly use that when creating vinyl decals that may include more than one word or picture in order to keep the proper spacing. Transfer tape is not an expensive item and can be purchased from eBay or etsy.
Natasha on August 23, 2014:
Hi, will purchasing scal give me the option to create font stencils with bridges? So I don't have to worry about trying to add in those pesky middles of a, o, p and so on? Desperate to find a solution for my cricut.
Noelle on May 17, 2014:
I have had SCAL for a very long time and went through all of the firmware updates when I installed it for use on my cricut expression long ago when I got it - Recently my cricut is saying it needs a new firmware update and I have not done it because I am scared I won't be able to use my SCAL anymore. I can't cut anything in my cricut craft room because it won't let me until I update. Any experience or advise on this would be so appreciated! Thank you so much!!

Thanks for the reply. Holy cow! I've just been looking at free svg images. I had no idea there were so many. Wish had known before I bought a few cartridges. I could've saved myself money. Hoping to receive my SCAL software by Saturday.
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on April 24, 2014:
I'm not sure but I haven't had to do that. All I've done is save an image from yahoo images for example and bring up in SCAL. I haven't had to convert anything. I think that's referring more to an actual photograph image.
Byrdgirl65 on April 24, 2014:
Hi, I have another question. I found a blog that talks about Sure Cuts A Lot and Cricut. The blogger states that I'll have to download Inkscape if I want to convert a JPEG image to an svg file. First of all, umm, I don't have a clue what this means. Secondly, is this true? Cindy
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on April 23, 2014:
If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.
Byrdgirl65 on April 22, 2014:
Hi, thanks so much for replying to my question. I just finished up purchasing SCAL from etsy and can't wait! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed as I follow your tutorial.
Samantha Adams (author) from Auburn, GA on April 22, 2014:
I purchased my Cricut machine on Ebay in December of 2013 and ordered the SCAL software shortly after and installed it immediately. I did have to update the operating software on my Cricut which the SCAL software walked me through on how to do that for free. It can be done!!! The software is compatible with the Expression. I purchased my SCAL on etsy for $25.
Byrdgirl65 on April 21, 2014:
Hi, I'm hoping you can answer my question about Cricut and SCAL. I purchased a used Cricut Expression( the first version) 3 weeks ago. My understanding is that I can't use the SCAL software with my Cricut due to ProvoCraft disabling it's use with their product. As I was reading your information about how to install SCAL, I noticed the date shows 2014. Did you recently start using the software? I would LOVE to not purchase cartridges because of their cost. I have purchased 4 but would have to spend a freaking fortune to get all of the images I like. I have asked other Cricut users online but the answer I've gotten is " no, it can't be done". Looking forward to hearing from you.
