Basic Sewing Stiches

How to Use your Sewing Machine (for Beginners)

Learning to Sew

When sewing, and working on a simple pattern you will find that you only need few sewing tools.

The most important items for your sewing chest/box, would be: a measuring tape, needle, thread, cloth, straight pins, and sewing shears.

Working on a sewing machine you will need a few more items, however for the most part those have most likely been included with your sewing machine. Such as presser foot attachments etc:

These attachments will help you with setting in a zipper, making a buttonhole, ruffle making, darning, quilting, and with decorative stitches.

When you have gathered the tools necessary to tackle a pattern, there are several steps to the construction of the garment or craft project you intend to make.. The patterns that you are using will specify whether to cut on the grain or the bias. The pattern will also specify what type of stitching to use, such as: edge stitching. under stitching, stay stitching and top stitching. The seam types would be a plain seam, zigzag seam, a french seam or any of many others.

By watching the videos , You will be able to learn how to thread your machine, wind your bobbin, etc.

You will also learn the many stitches that are built into your machine.

Make Your Own Quilts

  • How To Make A Charm Quilt
Charms can be created out of scraps of fabric, swaps with friends or you can purchase packs of charms. A charm quilt can be made as a memory quilt using pieces of fabric that are dear to your heart..say pieces of your baby's clothing or from your wed
  • Fat Quarter Quilting Using Free Patterns
A fat quarter is not what it sounds like. A fat quarter is not a quarter yard of fabric. A fat quarter is a pre cut piece of fabric that has been cut to measure 18" x 22".
  • Applique And Quilts
Applique is beautiful to be sure. Consisting of a background fabric of which shapes are placed upon and stitched down.Sun Bonnet Sue was a really fun project to applique. I made this as A block of the month.
  • Scrappy Quilts With Free Patterns
I have a love for scrappy quilts. I use left over scraps from planned quilts, fabric exchanges with friends and even pieces from used clothing. Which means great savings.
