Picnik Alternatives - Online Photo Editors
Picnik has been one of the best online photo editors, but with the news that Google is closing shop on Picnik, this lens will begin to focus on Picnik alternatives. There are many great options that you can read about here - Picmonkey, Ribbit, Fotor, Citrify, iPiccy, PiZap, Photoshop Express and more.
Ribbet Photo Editing
Ribbet is built on the same platform that made Google's Picnik great and is an easy to use yet powerful online photo editor. You can use Ribbet for collages, touch-ups and advanced photographic effects like curves and clone tools, fonts, frames, stickers, vampire effects, beards, and an entire pond full (yes, get ready to deal with some froggy puns) of effects. Like Picnik, there will be a free and a premium version.
Built by former Picnik Staff
PicMonkey, a creation of several former Picnik engineers offers a simple and easy to use tool for editing and altering your images. Even if Picnik was still around, PicMonkey would be a great alternative!
The entirely Web-based editor is fast and effective, and among the cleanest interface (PicMonkey and Ribbet will be fighting for that title) for a photo editor (Web or desktop) that I've come across. In the left-hand column you see all of your options. And that includes everything from basics likes cropping and rotating to a full array of air-brushing edits. In Picnik style, you can add icons and text and throw a frame around a photo. Basic edits consist of crop, resize, rotate, as well as color tweaking and sharpening. There is also an auto adjust button much like the one that was among Picnik's top features.
Picadilo Photo Editor
Picadilo is a free online photo editor that's easy to use and powerful. You can transform your photos using eyecatching effects, versatile editing tools and a nice range of textures. Some of the best features are the photo mosaic and the ability to use multiple windows - commonly available in only much more expensive photo editors. You can let your creativity run free by loading more than one photo and working on them side by side. You can even select and copy regions from one photograph to another photograph.
iPiccy - Up and Coming Competitor to Picnik
iPiccy is a free, completely web-based photo editing and sharing application to give users everywhere the ability to quickly and easily edit, enhance and share their photos from any Internet browser. There are other web based editors like Photoshop Express, Picmonkey, and Citrify but iPiccy's is a strong competitor to these services. iPiccy provides new, easy-to-use tools for modifying pictures, using advanced image processing.
iPiccy offers a clear and easy interface allowing users to pull images from any Web site or file folder on their computer. iPiccy includes an extensive variety of easy Web-based photo-editing tools such as Auto-fix, Rotate, Crop, Resize and Color adjustment and Sharpen which you have come to expect in any photo editor. But in addition, iPiccy can also be used to turn photos into creative masterpieces, with clever special effects like liquify, painter, vignette, pencils, and many more. Some of these are features you would have to upgrade to premium service with other online photo editors. Like Photoshop, it even has an advanced photo painter that works with levels for the most complex types of photo editing.
Photocat Photo Editor
Photocat was launched in late 2012 as another entrant in the crowded field of online Photo Editors. Obviously photos and animals are the popular theme! In the examples below you will see that Photocat offers the standard array of basic photo editing features - with the addition of an excellent collage option. Between the collage, some nice holiday features and some advanced handling of large images Photocat is a good option for folks looking for a free and easy to use Photo Editor.
The Future is no Picnik!
Free Online Version of Photoshop
Photoshop Express is a web based and free version of Photoshop. Photoshop is the name of a brand though some people think it is a generic term for photo editing.
Sure it's a less featured version of the expensive Photoshop software. That said you won't miss many of the exotic features as this tool is targeted at mainstream consumers, not professionals. Photoshop Express is a free - all it requires is an easy registration.
Citrify Photo Editor - Easy to use - Great facial touch up tools
It's not like the world needs one more photo editor, but if one is going to be built at least make it a good one. Citrify is a great addition. The best feature is the ease of touching up photos. I took the above photo on the left (a Citrify default photo) and enhanced it to the image on the right in the first 4 minutes of using Citrify. No training. No research. I just uploaded the photo and used the out-of-the-box touch-up tools. Citrify does not have all the features of other photo editors - but for facial touchups with almost no training Citrify is awesome!
Tucia Photo Editing - Professional Photo Enhacement
I love editing photos, but when you have the photos say from a wedding, a reunion or a graduation you might want a professional touch. Tucia can add a person into a family portrait or remove an unwanted stranger from your photo. They can digitally open up closed eyes or fix hair. They can also offer glamorize and digital cosmetic enhancement options - get a tan, clear acne or remove braces. Simple touch-ups such as digital camera mark or red eye removal and cropping are also available.
Fotor Photo Editor
Fotor is a photo editing web application that's suitable for people, especially Windows 8 users, looking for an easy to use and affordable photo editor. Fotor sports a Windows 8 interface and allows you to your photos a wide range of looks, to add fancy borders, to create a collage or simply fix some imperfections, Fotor is free to use so long as your browser runs Flash. Fotor's clean interface sports a dual pane toolbar on the left with thumbnails of all the photos (you can upload many at once) for your session on the right and your editing workspace in the middle of the screen. From this basic interface you have access to a full range of free photo editing tools. With Picmonkey starting to charge for certain services, editors like Fotor will probably see more traffic.
For when you are working offline, Fotor also has companion apps for the iPhone/iPad, the Android and Windows 8 so you can and use Fotor across many devices
Pizap is a fun free photo editor that lets people easily create wacky images with their digital pictures. PiZap was created as a tool primarily for social networking users who want to post their images to their favorite social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, Hi5, Orkut, Friendster, Bebo, miGente, Windows Live Spaces, Blogger, Tagged, and many more. PiZap provides a very easy to use photo editor that lets you add photo effects, custom text or speech bubbles, hundreds of original colorful stickers, a full painting program, and much more.
BeFunky Photo Editor
BeFunky Photo Effects allow everyday people to easily create photographically rich and artistic results from their digital images without the need for any technical knowledge. BeFunky is a quick and simple tool for transforming digital photos into instant art work or digital comics. BeFunky offers an extensive range of effects, speech bubbles, accessories, graphics and lot's of objects that you can add to your pictures. These "one-click" photo effect options produce desired results effortlessly and each effect comes with the option to make simple adjustments. BeFunky makes it easy to get photos from your favorite web sites. Apply special photo effects and save back to your account -- Facebook, MySpace, Flikr, Bebo, Hi5 and Friendster.
Dumpr.net offers a tool set for turning your existing photos into works of art. Dumpr offers some unique online photo manipulations options for your photo uploads, links to photos and photos directly from your Flickr account.
Pictures4fun Photo Editing
Fun Effects Like Your Photo On a Book Cover
You don't need to be an expert to play with your photos, so it's time for some good fun Pictures4fun provides new original effects every day. Choose an effect from one of their categories (Photo Fun, Magazine Covers or Picture Frames) and upload your own photo. After resizing your photo you can download the fun photo to your hard disk or use it as an avatar.
Pixlr Photo Editor
Pixlr is a web service that combines image design and paint tools with photo editing. Pixlr is a full-featured photo editor that looks like Adobe Photoshop or Corel Paint Shop Pro, it has a vertical toolbar packed with selection and editing tools, support for multiple layers, and even an array of filters like blur, unsharp mask, and more. It's really a complete photo editor that runs in your Web browser. So whether you want to create a free form image , layer one image over another or use a variety of filters, effects and level adjustments to transform photographs, Pixlr is equally capable of meeting your needs. Even with all these features, Piixlr remains easy to use - certainly much easier and cheaper than Photoshop.
iPad Photo Editing
To many people's surprise, the iPad is a great photo editor. To many the iPad is an awesome computer for watching movies, browsing the internet and playing games. But one of the family of applications for which the iPad is not as well known is photo editing application. Unlike the iPhone, the iPad has no camera. But if you bring photos from another source, you will be amazed at what some of the top Photoshop style apps for the iPad can do with your plain old photos.
Want to change facial expressions in photos of people with just one click, or even create funny animations? Cartoon Photo! makes this possible! This online service works in fully automatic mode: you just upload a photo from your computer or from the internet by entering its URL, choose an emotion from the list (joy, sadness, surprise, etc.) and get a funniest gif animation, or a static caricature. The service automatically detects the face in your photo and also lets you adjust animation speed and picture size.
Tuxpi Photo Editor
Easy Photo Effects
Tuxpi is a easy way to apply photo effects or picture frame effects to a photo directly from a webpage. you only need to upload a photo, apply a photo effect or picture frame and the re-download it the modified photo result. Every effect is one step! So it's a not a full service photo editor - but what it does it does with ease! It has several effects not easily found on other sites - filmstrips and newscast are great to create fun photos. You can also combine multiple effects for some great customization
Your Photo On a Magazine Cover
MagMyPic has added more new magazines, and now has 30 different magazines to choose from. You can select any of them and make an impressive, unique, custom fake magazine with ease - it's simple! Just upload a pic and get started, or you can browse the magazines before hand. Web based and easy to use - but all you can customize is the photo - you can't change any of the text.

Picnik was great but I still think photoshop is easier to use :L Nice lens though :)
monstarfitness on April 29, 2012:
Google plus now has pretty much all of the features Piknik had. So I think it just basically transferred to google. I liked it better before google but its not bad. Google stole Instagram too we shall see how this ends up lol

Thanks for this extensive resource. Love the pics showcasing different special effects. Blessed by a joyful angel.

Google's Picasa is much better than Picnic which is why Google is probably shutting down Picnic. Picasa integrated with Google+ is even better.

I will miss picnik. This is a great informative lens that will be of great help.
anonymous on February 27, 2012:
Picnik, yep it's certainly going to be missed, not sure why some seem to miss with good things, they did however tell me that Google will have a creativity app. well it's there, and has some of the features but NOT all, & I dont' find it as user friendly. But does anyone know of an app similar, that houses great features (thinning, text, all or close to the same features?). I think the closest thing I have found is iPICCY. Google is getting so big that they feel they need to purchase rights to everything, instead of getting the general publics opinion. Shame on them! Any suggestions
anonymous on February 25, 2012:
I love Picnik I wish it was not shouting down my daughter loves this its easy for her to read and use shame on you google bring it back.
Wednesday-Elf from Savannah, Georgia on February 15, 2012:
I love Picnik and am sad it is closing. Wonder what Flickr will use as their editing tool once Picnik is gone? I'm delighted I found this page, though, with some alternative choices as I do not have an easy-to-use, resizing, cropping, brightening, etc. photo editor on my computer. Thanks for the terrific list!
arunadavis on January 31, 2012:
Gonna miss Picnik dearly and I am yet to embrace the alternatives. But it's gonna to know that are options out there!
Tom Maybrier on January 31, 2012:
I know I'll miss Picnik. I hope that one of these suggestions serves me as well. Great lens, thanks.

Am used to photoshop but i think i can try use other softwares and online services.
David Lawrence (author) from United States on January 29, 2012:
@GaelicForge: Picnik was an online service so the comparables I talk about are online services. However, with regards to desktop software ACDSee is an excellent alternative to Photoshop. The folks I know who are ACDSee fans all feel it easier to use than Photoshop. It may not have all the features - but for specific uses (as your wife's) and for the ease of use it is a great option!
GaelicForge on January 29, 2012:
My wife uses ACDSee which seems to work very well for the photo editing she does for our Etsy and Artfire shops.
anonymous on January 28, 2012:
found you while researching alternatives to Picnik (I have been a premium user for years, and am feeling a loss) . . . just wanted to let you know that Picnik Premium does/did in fact have cloning (I use it daily), and curves (if I am understanding what you mean here), and you can "flatten" an image (assuming you mean combining layers?) . . . as you can tell, I am a bit of an illiterate when it comes to computers - that's why Picnik has been a great tool for me . . . very intuitive & user friendly
. . . I use/used it daily and was very happy with my results . . . I thank you for your info here, and will continue to seek out an alternative to Picnik . . . I do a lot of layering & texture work . . . and need to find a suitable replacement (I don't mind paying - I'm not looking for a freebee) . . . judging by the "apple bee" image, maybe Avairy will fit the bill??
. . . thanx for the info & links here!!
anonymous on January 24, 2012:
thanks for the list and tips!
I do feel there is one editor missing here, which is Pixlr.com... whether you chose Pixlr Express for quick editing or Pixlr-o-matic for a fun way to beef up your photo's... I really feel that this one should be added to your list of great on line photo-editors that can replace Picnik
John Dyhouse from UK on January 20, 2012:
