Drawing A Flaming Skull

Skulls, the popular emblem of the pirate or a great tattoo design entwined with tribal swirls and frilly design elements.

This is a hub page simply on how to draw a flaming skull, simple enough right?

When drawing a skull for the first time you may have to study a reference photo of a skull to make your drawing look correct and in keeping with the many variations of a piece of skull art, so that's what I have provided to the right==>

The Importance Of Draft Sketches

To see if your ideas and sketches could work it is best to sketch them out quickly so that you can save time on a final version of your intended idea, sketching a few skulls out on a piece of paper with no regard for precise drawings you can create some top ideas if you draw quick.

Draft sketches let you design or draw something to find the perfect angle or design so that you don't have to go back and draw your artwork again, planning like this should come natural once you draw often.

Quick sketches really help you become a faster artist at coming up with new ideas and it's a form of brainstorming that exercises your mind in a creative way.

So always sketch things out and take as much time as you like to find the right design, you'll find that using this method you save on wasted time working on a drawing if you had not planned with quick sketches.

See some examples below.

Draughting And Sketching Flaming Skull Ideas

Drafting A Skull Sketch

The first sketch is a basic one, one that serves as a template.

The first sketch is a basic one, one that serves as a template.

Simple Step 1: Find Your Skull Face

Finding your skull face is just a term for loosely sketching out your design, finding your position of the skull and deciding on what it could look like.

I'll often do little sketches on one sheet of A4 size paper(See above!) to get a feel for the design that I want, although what often happens is I come up with lots of variations that will look good also for separate skull designs, so I concentrate on one first and work on that one until I see it through, only then do I go back and finish the others.

After this little exercise you should know which little skull sketch you want to develop in some way.

Developing The Draft Sketch

The second stage of developing your skull is working out the features.

Simple Step 2: Developing The Skull Drawing

When it comes to developing your skull sketch drawing you have to work the lines more to see if you can push the drawing beyond your initial draft sketch to see what else you could add.

Often I work in bright daylight for best results, as I can see little imperfections on the paper and it's these that I tend to try to follow to see where the drawing will lead me and add something to the sketch.

Clarifying Your Skull Drawing

Adding light and dark elements such as shading works well for this step.

Simple Step 3: Finalizing Your Skull Design

Arriving at the conclusion of a drawing there is no turning back and so the path is forward on your skull drawing, seeing the elements that you planned from the beginning come together is a good feeling, because quite often as an artist there are many throw away drawings and concepts that don't make it to the final design.

logan on January 13, 2010:

one cool thing about art.. you don't have to draw things like they look (teeth can look different and you can draw flames however you want) if that's his style of drawing, let him do it

aNg3l!N@ on January 12, 2010:

dis shyt was kinda hawt, i lyked it tho

Wayne Tully (author) from Hull City United Kingdom on November 19, 2009:

This is not the defintive guide on drawing a flaming skull as you have pointed out with your comment, so lighten up, because I'm happy with just drawing stuff like this!

Sam on November 18, 2009:

you could forego this entire guide and just say "draw a skull from reference and change the structure of the eye sockets to look angry."

Also, there is more than one type of tooth in your average skull. incisors look more menacing and i don't know how you could miss them. Flames don't generally tend to lick downwards either, and centering them around the shape of the head does nothing to make it look like they're emanating from it.

john on November 05, 2009:

leave him alone linda. he can do what he wants. don't criticize him.

royal on November 01, 2009:

good drawings I love them

Wayne Tully (author) from Hull City United Kingdom on October 13, 2009:

Cheers Jennifercingylinda(all rolled into one!)

Drawing is ace when you can draw, because you can choose what you want to draw and when you find that way of drawing that you like, you can draw that thing much more often by drawing it more than once, even on Sundays when Sunday schools a joke to all concerned, drawing Jesus is no fun as he was a simple figment of peoples imaginations...demons and dark evil exists and so they should be acknowledged with drawings that reflect their inner struggle of failing humanity that is very admirable indeed!

Good day haha!

linda on October 13, 2009:

man!!! you need to stop drawing stuff like this...it is ugly and eveil...like really your like an adult and ur drawing little kid stuff????????haha

??? on October 09, 2009:

????????????????????

Wayne Tully (author) from Hull City United Kingdom on October 09, 2009:

By lots of practice and drawing on the toilet!

nicole Dean on October 09, 2009:

so how can u draw something like that

Wayne Tully (author) from Hull City United Kingdom on August 07, 2009:

JoBroLover1 on August 07, 2009:

i luv, luv, luv your art work almost as much as i luv Nick Jonas. it is so detailed and awesome and it's awesome and easy to draw from, thank you!

Wayne Tully (author) from Hull City United Kingdom on July 16, 2009:

I'll have to simplify it for simple minds and clarify it for the hard to see...cheers for that unverified comment CC!

CC on July 15, 2009:

Way too complicated and u can hardly see wtf they're doing.Sorry

sam on May 04, 2009:
