10 Free Knitting Romantic Dishcloth Patterns for Your Sweetheart
Michele's love for knitting shines like the sun! Knitting is a trending craft, so jump on board today!
You can make more than one if you have the time making each one a different color. By using two strands of yarn you can increase the thickness and make the dishcloth into a pot holder. I've chosen 10 of my favorite heart or love dishcloths including a couple of my own original dishcloths. I will not only provide you with the free knitting patterns to these romantic cloths but at the bottom of this article I will give you some guidance as to some places to go to learn more about how to knit in general.
What will be covered in this article:
- An overview of these Valentine's Day dishcloths
- Why a homemade gift is often better
- Free knitting patterns for these romantic dishcloths
- Tips for knitting these dishcloths
- Tutorials on how to knit

Don't have a lot of money for Valentine's Day? A homemade gift and simple decor from the party store can make for a romantic holiday without spending too much!

Valentine's Day Dishcloths
There are many heart or love themed dishcloths out there for free. I chose these because they are not only my favorite ones but also they are very simple for beginners.
These patterns only use the knit stitch and the purl stitch so you can just be a starting out knitter and still complete these beautifully. Typically the background is done in stockinette stitch so if you make an error on a row it stands out pretty clearly. So as long as you keep an eye on your work you can just easily rip out a row if you mess up.
I am also including some of my own personal creations as free knitting patterns. These patterns have not been published yet so this article will give you a chance to knit them if you would like to.

Why a Homemade Gift is Often Better
- Making something by hand makes it more special
- What you create is often a reflection of how you feel about the person you are knitting for
- You can use your favorite hobby to create something beautiful for someone
- Save money by knitting an item that costs only a few dollars in materials
- A knitted dishcloth may be viewed as a keepsake by your sweetheart and saved as a milestone in your relationship
- You can learn a new hobby if you do not know how to knit yet or you can expand your creative skills by elaborating on the existing patterns
The 10 Romantic Dishcloth Patterns
I will admit it was tough for me to narrow it down to 10. I have a huge binder full of my favorite dishcloths. I print them out when I find them, and as I knit each one I usually make a note on the pattern of the date and who I made it for. I also like having printed patterns, because they are more portable and I can write on them where I am at in the pattern. I hope you enjoy these romantic dishcloths as much as I have!

I love this knitted dishcloth of a heart because it is simple. I would however only use one color rather than multiple colors.
Knit Heart Dishcloth
- Dolly Creates: Knit Heart Dishcloth
Here is the blog that contains the Knit Heart Dishcloth in full.
1. Knit Heart Free Dishcloth
I love this pattern because it is very easy and knits up super fast. There is a lot of use of the knit stitch which makes it simple to me. The background is your basic stockinette stitch so it is very easy to see when you have made an error. Just watch your knitting as you go and if a row looks out of place, rip it out and redo it.
I like the garter stitch border, because it's neat and simple, but you can always change it. Just find in the pattern where the border starts and ends in each row. Then, you can change those stitches to be moss stitch if you'd like. I would not recommend making the border stockinette stitch (one row purl; one row knit) as it will make the dishcloth curl and you will have a tough time blocking.
I'm sure if you have any questions the original author can answer them on her blog or please feel free to post comments or questions about this pattern at the bottom of this article.
2. Kiss Me Lips Free Dishcloth
Taking a break from all the hearts in this hub for a minute, I bring you a very cute Valentine's dishcloth with a kiss on it!
Kiss Me Lips
- Aunt Kathy's Place- My Original Patterns: Kiss Me Lips
Her blog has great free knitting patterns so check it out and you may find even more than just this pattern that you love!

A beautiful purple heart pattern, but you can knit it for your sweetie in whatever color you desire!
Purple Heart Free Dishcloth
- Aunt Kathy's Place- My Original Patterns: Purple Hearts Version One
This is the same blog as the Kiss Me Lips dishcloth.
3. Purple Heart Free Dishcloth
This is a simple and very pretty pattern. You can make adjustments to it as you see fit for your sweetheart this Valentine's Day. You can also change the color to red or pink to match this holiday. It's up to you.
Make the design yours, but keep in mind you cannot sell your work or sell any of these patterns as they are privately owned and not for sale. Just wanted to make sure that you keep that in mind.
4. Purple Heart 2 Free Dishcloth
Although this one is very similar to #3 - Purple Heart Free Dishcloth, I like it better. It is more simplistic in my eyes. I think it has a clean look to it and it is one of my favorites.

This link is the same location as #3. I really love this blog, so check it out to find great dishcloths you can knit that match just about any hobby - for free!

This may be most favorite of all of the free knitting patterns. I love the 5 hearts and how they are arranged. Beautiful!
Valentine Dishcloth

Find the link to this beautiful pattern on this website.
5. Valentine Dishcloth
I love the 5 hearts in this free knitting pattern. The seed stitch (moss stitch) border makes it very elegant. I personally do not like knitting seed stitch borders because they take a bit longer, but they are worth it. They are gorgeous.
If you would rather not do a seed stitch border, consider doing a garter stitch border (only knit stitches). Note: A seed stitch is when you knit a knit stitch followed by a purl stitch; this is continued on like this: *KPKPK*. To change this, just adjust the pattern to *K5*.
She did a lovely job knitting this free dishcloth. I love the color she choose. The patterns presented in this article are all simple and can be done with inexpensive worsted weight yarn. They are also only using the stitches of Knit (K) and Purl (P) so any beginner can do them!
6. Heart Lollipop Free Dishcloth
Heart Free Knitting Dishcloths #6 and #7
- Knit Dishcloth Patterns | Designs by Emily
Welcome to Designs by Emily. This is where you can find all my knit dishcloth patterns. I have many knit dishcloth patterns available for purchase in the pattern shop and many free knit dishcloth patterns as well. Both #6 and #7 are provided here.
6. Heart Lollipop Free Dishcloth
This is one of Emily's dishcloths that she offers for free on her website. She has many paid patterns as well, but she has been kind enough to offer a wide variety of beautiful free patterns which I absolutely love.
I have knitted many of her designs that were free of charge. Her prices are not too high though for the paid patterns, because she is an excellent designer. Her patterns are very easy to follow. I always enjoy checking out her website.
This pattern, the heart lollipop free dishcloth, and the next one are both found on Emily's website; the link is on the right. Anytime I need to knit a new dishcloth, I run across her website and often find exactly what I'm looking for.
There is quite a vast array of different items on the dishcloths that she has for free on her website, so you can find just about anything. For example, I love her Charcoal Grill dishcloth, and recently knitted it for my dad for his birthday since he likes to grill.
7. Heart Dishcloth
7. Heart Dishcloth
This is by the same author as #6 and you can find the pattern on the same website. I like this pattern a bit more, because it is a beautiful big heart which is one of my favorite designs! I would highly recommend knitting this one for Valentine's Day!
8. Love Washcloth
The Love Washcloth is probably my favorite of the ones I have presented so far. I think it is very well made and just gorgeous. You could do a lot of things to change the pattern if you want to.
8. Love Washcloth
8. Love Washcloth
This pattern is unique because it is basically all knit except the actual heart which is done in stockinette stitch. It is unlike the others in this manner. It is just beautiful.
Also, on the link to the right you can find other patterns by this author that are created in the same manner. There is a peace symbol and a smiley face and many others.
I would check it out if I were you to see if there are any others you wish to knit. However, this Love Washcloth of a heart is perfect for your sweetheart for Valentine's Day!
9. Two Hearts Becoming One Dishcloth
By Michele Kelsey
9. Two Hearts Becoming One Dishcloth

This is my original pattern of two hearts. It has a big heart with a smaller one. I love hearts which is why I created this pattern.

Learn How to Knit
The following videos will teach you the knitting basics.
Casting On (CO)
When a pattern says “CO 25” it means “cast on” 25 stitches. Casting on begins the knitting process, and this video will teach you how to cast on stitches in the easiest way possible. This video is very good because it is short, but slow enough to show you the method with ease.

The Knit Stitch (K) or Garter Stitch
The Knit (K) Stitch is the most basic stitch. It is one of the easiest stitches to learn how to do. I love the Knit (K) Stitch because over time, it becomes repetitive and you don’t even have to look at your hands when you are knitting anymore.

Binding Off (BO)
Binding Off (BO) in a pattern is the method in which you finish a knitting project. It is a crucial part of learning how to knit because without it your project would just fall apart. For a beginner, there is usually only one method to do this. The video below will explain how to do this easily. It is short, but informative.

Weave in the Ends
This is an important part of knitting, because it is the final touch to completing your knitting project. You just weave in your ends with a darning needle, snip off the ends, and you will be done! So watch this great video for a brief lesson on how to best do this!
