So You Want to Draw an Erupting Volcano, Do You?

Sketching volcanos is something of a loved childhood memory for me. I enjoyed drawing them erupting with lava and hurling huge rocks all over a nice landscape of trees and maybe a nice village somewhere in between.

I start by sketching the overall mountain shape. The draft is an early idea based on the photo above. You can source some photos of actual volcanos too, and that's what I would recommend doing—once you've seen a volcano in action, it's easier to relate that drawing on the page.

  • Be aware when drawing a volcano that you can add lots of mountainous detail, but don't worry about it too much. The fun lies in drawing the top of the volcano as it erupts with lava and rocks shooting out and smoke spilling out for good measure.

I suggest you approach your drawings as if they are in stages. This will help you to realize your progress and evaluate the image at each drawing stage. Then, you'll know what works and what doesn't work in your own sketching process. Art and drawing are about finding your own way of working, and this is what will motivate you later on.

In the video below, you will be able to see the drawing unfold before your eyes. Pay close attention to the drawing because I don't copy the photo—I make up my own volcano sketch that's inspired by the photo. That's what artists do.

Drawing volcanoes is fun, and I hope you try this out!

Had to share this one and a lot due to the video. You provided such a good presentation on as you say, "How to Draw a Volcano." You captured it so well especially when describing how you were going to give it energy. Thumbs up.
