DIY Free Crochet Pattern for a Giraffe Baby Rattle

What you need to know: crochet techniques like magic circle, sc Sc2tog, and changing colors
Necessary Materials
- Sport baby yarn – Color A (fuchsia), Color B (green), Color C (yellow), Color D (purple), Color E (dark purple)
- 3.5 mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Polyester fiberfill
- Stitch marker
- Aluminum jingle bell charms (10 mm)
Pattern Notes
- About the pattern: Work in continuous rounds unless otherwise instructed.
- Stitch marker: Please use a stitch marker and place it in the first stitch of the round to mark the beginning. After finishing the round, move the marker up to the first stitch of the following round.
- Gauge: 5sc per inch
Step 1: Make the Handle
- Row 1: Using Color B, start by making 5 sc in a magic ring (5).
- Row 2: Work 2 sc in each st around (10).
- Row 3: Sc in next st; 2 sc in next st – rep 5 times (15).
- Row 4: Sc in each of next 2 st; 2 sc in next st – rep 5 times (20).
- Rows 5–14: Do 20 sc around.
- At this point, start filling the handle with fiberfill. Add 2 jingle bells (refer to photo).
- Row 15: Work 2 sc, sc2tog – rep 5 times (15).
- Rows 16–25: Do 15 sc around.
- Fill the handle till the end and set it aside until the head is made and ready to be attached.
Step 2: Make the Head
- Row 1: Using Color A, start by making 5 sc in a magic ring (5).
- Row 2: Work 2 sc in each st around (10).
- Row 3: Sc in next st; 2 sc in next st – rep 5 times (15).
- Row 4: Sc in each of next 2 st; 2 sc in next st – rep 5 times (20).
- Rows 5–8: Do 20 sc around.
- Change color here.
- Row 9: Using Color B, continue with sc 7; 2sc in each of next 5 st; work 8 sc (25).
- Row 10: Do 25 sc around.
- Now, using Color C, make two crosses 'X' in front.
- Start filling the head with fiberfill. Add two jingle bells inside the fiberfill.
- Rows 11–15: Do 25 sc around.
- At this point, using Color E, make the eyes.
- Row 16: Sc in each of next 3 st; sc2tog – rep 5 times (20)
- Row 17: Sc in each of next 2 st; sc2tog – rep 5 times (15).
- Row 18: Sc 1, sc2tog – rep 5 times (10).
- Row 19: Sc2tog – rep 5 times (5).
- Row 20: Sc2tog till the end.
Step 3: Make the Ears
- Row 1: Using Color D, start by making 3 sc in a magic ring (3).
- Row 2: Work 2 sc in each st around (6).
- Row 3: Sc in next st; 2 sc in next st – rep 3 times (9).
- Row 4: Sc in next 2 st; 2 sc in next st – rep 3 times (12).
- Row 5: Sc in next 3 st; 2 sc in next st – rep 3 times (15).
- Rows 6–10: Do 15 sc around.
- Row 11: Sc 3; sc2tog – 3 times (12).
- Leave a longer tail in order to sew the ear onto the head.
- Repeat this step for the second ear.
Step 4: Make the Horns
- Row 1: Using Color A, start by making 3 sc in a magic ring (3).
- Row 2: Work 2 sc in each st around (6).
- Change color here.
- Rows 3–7: Using Color B, continue with 6 sc around.
- Fill in the horn loosely.
- Repeat this for the second horn.
- After the horns are attached and the nose and eyes are made, the final step in order to finish the head is to attach the ears. Before attaching the ears, you need to take an ear, fold it and sew two edges together with a yarn needle.
- Now simply sew the horns onto the head.
- Attach the handle onto the body.

Step 5: Make the Patches
- To finish, make a couple of patches and attach them to the body.
- Patches are made using Color D.
- Row 1: Make 3 sc in a magic ring (3).
- Row 2: Work 2 sc in each st around (6). Tie off. Leave a longer tail in order to sew it on.
And there you go. Your pretty giraffe rattle is done!

I would crochet around a plastic easter egg and then you could stuff it with any material to make it quiet or loud.
