Free & Easy Crochet Thread Pattern for 5 inch Lots to Love Berenguer Itty Bitty Doll Outfit: Dress

I love to crochet and try to find time to crochet every day. I have written several patterns that I hope to share for free!

Why Free Patterns?

Over the years, I have had fun making these adorable little dresses. There was a time when I was an at-home mom, living in a rural area. Working outside of the home was out of the question. The daycare fees for two toddlers was more than half my paycheck. I decided to stay at home. I sold items on ebay and my best selling items were little doll dresses for tiny dolls. I started writing my own patterns. Hopefully someone else will be able to use the patterns to make a little money during these difficult times.

Why Crochet Thread?

Most of my doll clothing is made from crochet thread. Occasionally I will use a fine baby yarn or a fingering yarn. I like the crochet thread because when crocheting for these tiny dolls the thread shows up the delicate details of the stitches.

My favorite brand is Aunt Lydia's which comes in many beautiful colors. I love the color of this dress - Aunt Lydia's French Rose. I have probably used almost all the colors at one time or another. I do use other threads and love to find a bargain where I can purchase vintage threads at a great price!

What You Need

Supplies and Abbreviations

Supplies:

Size #10 Cotton Crochet thread (I would start with one color but if you are comfortable changing colors use 2 or 3 different colors or shades of one color)
Size #6 U.S. Steel Crochet hook - My favorite is Susan Bates. I like the shape of the hook.

Large needle like a darning needle with a large eye and sharp end for weaving in thread ends. Also, I use a large needle with a blunt tip to weave in ribbon.

Small button (no larger than 5/8" diameter)

Tips

  • Tips: I like to cut the ribbon at a diagonal and use a tiny bit of fabric glue on my finger and rub across the edge so the ribbon will not fray.
  • If you have tiny buttons you can chain 3 or even 2 instead of 4 for your button hole.
  • Using larger hook and heavier thread will result in a dress that can fit a larger doll.
  • Always try on your model as you go to make sure everything is fitting correctly.
