Create a Lightning Storm in Photoshop

To create a lightning storm Photoshop manipulation, we will need these stock images and Photoshop resources:

Step 1 - Add The Storm Clouds

First you have open your image in a new PSD file.

Add the Storm Clouds Texture over your image and set the blend mode to Multiply, opacity 43%

Step 2 - Add a Gradient Map

Add a Gradient Map with these colors #000000 (location 24%) , #5f7f8c (location 82%) and #ffffff (location 100%).

Using the gradient map will darken the image. That way we turn the day image to night effect.

Step 3 - Add The Lightning Overlays

Add the Lightning Overlay over your image and set the blend mode to Screen

Scroll to Continue

Step 4 - Colorize the Image

To colorize the image with some of the original colors, duplicate the photo and place it above the other layers. Set the blend mode to color, opacity 17%.

Step 5 - Final Adjustments

For the final adjustments you can add a Levels adjustment to increase the contrast.

I also used the High Pass filter to sharpen the image.

Press Shift-Control-Alt-E to make a copy of the layers. Go to Filter > Other > High Pass and set the radius to 1.

Modify the blend mode of this layer to Overlay or Soft Light.

I hope you enjoyed this quick tutorial for beginners on how to create a storm in Photoshop using lightning textures.

Change the Color of the Lightning Effect

If you add a Hue/Saturation adjustment with Colorize checked, you can change the color tones. Simply modify the Hue level.

I want to make a new tutorial on how to create a photo effect. So, please tell me which photo effect do you like.
