Barbie Doll Clothes Crafts

My favorite hobby is crocheting doll clothes. Using what I've learned from reading existing patterns, I create my own designs for Barbie.

One of the most memorable toys we girls had in our childhood is the Barbie doll. Making up stories, dressing them appropriately, these were the things that occupied our time.

This hub is about crafting clothes for Barbie, whether you can sew, crochet, knit, or even with just some duct tape. It will also include some links for more details on these ideas.

Reasons to Make Your Own Barbie Clothes

While the doll clothes sold in stores do look nice, it is more economical to make one yourself. Not only will it save you some hard-earned bucks, you can be sure that the clothes you make will be original when she plays with her friends.

This is also a good way to encourage girls to learn how to sew (or crochet or knit) and design clothes for their favorite doll. Because wearing matching girl/doll clothes seem to be quite trendy, It is also quite easy to make some weather-appropriate clothes for Barbie to match the season.

Sewing Barbie Doll Clothes

Here are the materials you need to start sewing Barbie doll clothes:

Materials: Sewing Pattern, fabric (scraps or newly purchased), thread, needle, snaps or velcro, and scissors.

There are lots of sewing patterns available on the market. Whether you are a beginner or an expert in sewing, you will be able to find one to suit your taste and skill to dress up your Barbie doll. Here is a link to some free patterns: Free Sewing Patterns for Fashion Doll Clothes.

If you are trying to save money, you can use your old clothes and cut out fabric from it. Much like the challenges you see in shows like Project Runway, you can use your imagination and create anything from any fabric you have available.

When teaching a child how to sew with a thread and needle, have them handle the needle carefully. Thimbles can be used to protect those precious little digits. Having personally pricked my thumb from sewing, it can be quite painful and might cause some slight swelling. If you are concerned she might get hurt, as an adult, you can do the work that requires a lot of sewing.

As for closures, you can use either snaps or velcro. If you have a sewing machine, velcro will be easier to attach. It will just add some bulk to the clothes. But, if you don't have a sewing machine like me, snaps are more preferable as it is much easier to hand sew.

Crochet or Knit Barbie Doll Clothes

For this section, you can check out my hub: Crocheting Clothes for Your Barbie Doll. While I do not know how to knit, the same thing applies to Knitting Clothes for Your Barbie Doll. I have also included a section there involving the different Barbie sizes available since its creation.

Embellish Doll Clothes

If you have problems following a pattern, you can just embellish existing clothes you already have. You can use sequins, beads, feathery fringe, fabric paint, glitter glue, etc. to bedazzle your doll's wardrobe. In the video below, the guest's 9-year old daughter and her friend sewed lines of beads on a dress and did a good job with it.

No Sew Barbie Doll Clothes Crafts

If you have no sewing skills, do not despair. There are other methods to making Barbie doll clothes. In Artsy Craftsy Mom, she used a sock to make a dress for Barbie. She shows where to cut the sock to make it fit your Barbie doll.

In the next video, an old T-shirt was used to make any doll a stylish dress just by using scissors. This is a good way to recycle those old clothes you might have lying around the house.

This next idea is one of my personal favorites when I was researching for this hub. Having been a big fan of Mythbusters, I love watching the episodes involving their favorite tool in their workshop: duct tape. There are several tutorials available on how to make your own duct tape dress. This video will show you how to make one.

Barbie Doll Clothes Storage

Now that you are full of ideas on how to make your own Barbie doll clothes, make sure you have a storage space in mind. If you have a closet, why not make one for your Barbie doll, too? While there are some sold in retail, you can also use cardboard boxes installed with a curtain rod inside for hanging the clothes. Hangers can easily be made from paper clips or some coated electrical wire shaped into a hanger.

If you have some of those wooden wine boxes around, you can check out this link from Thrifty Fun on how to make a Barbie trunk to store the clothes in.
