Autumn Colors in Forest Virginia and Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest Home.

Don is an Amateur Photographer. He has been capturing examples of Beauty, Life and Scenery for decades and shares his works with friends.

AUTUMN in Forest, VA

The quaint village of Forest VA, up until a few decades ago, was just a Post Office location on the south-western side of the city of Lynchburg, VA.

Since then, the area has grown tremendously with the addition of; numerous housing developments, large schools, restaurants, and retail establishments. And sad to say, much of its natural beauty has been disappearing with this rampant growth.

But as of now, the great thing about Forest is that there are still numerous back roads in this section of BEDFORD COUNTY where you can take short leisurely drives and enjoy some beautiful scenery and in the FALL, take in some really great color.

Thomas Jefferson

In case you weren't aware, Forest gets it's name from Poplar Forest, which was the summer home of .

Over his lifetime, he personally maintained the property as a working farm; and today the original home and surrounding acreage is still there for interested tourists to visit.

Now, the property is maintained magnificently and there are and have been ongoing archeological digs on the grounds for decades as Archeologists study the lifestyles of the many people who supported this historic property.

Of course, every American knows about the other famous Thomas Jefferson home, Monticello. But over the years I, a person who grew up in Lynchburg have been surprised by just how so many people I talk to actually know very little, or often nothing, about Poplar Forest.

Anyway, As you can see by the attached pictures, Forest, and Lynchburg, are essentially in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

These ancient hills along with the local scenery provide a beautiful Natural combination when you lift your head towards the Mountains and take the time to look at what Nature has laid out before you.

Autumn Photography using Thumbnail copies

As with all Photographers, I am very proud of my work, and at times my ego forces me to show off a few of my favorite shots.

When I feel this overpowering need, I will take a few of my favorite photographs and place thumbnail copies of them onto a hub written to a certain theme.

This small collection of my photography is one such hub.

I hope that you enjoy the fantastic seasonal colors and how the pictures support my general theme of the beauty of Autumn in the Lynchburg and Forest areas of Virginia.

Junction of Rt-811 & Rt-221

What a View!

In all of Forest Virginia, there is one spot, about 300-500 yards wide that presents probably the most beautiful panoramic vista of farmland and mountains. This spot is right at the junction of Rte-811 and Rte-221.

If you are ever in the area, you should take the time and drive there and park along the road and enjoy this fantastic scene. You will be looking across a large farms pastures and barns to the foothills of wooded mountains, with the actual Blue Ridge mountains in the background.

I recommend that you carry your camera with and capture this scene while it still exists. I am sure there is some callous land developer out there just salivating over purchasing this unique property and turning it into shopping centers and housing developments.

The sad and dangerous thing is that I took this shot with my back about 3-feet off of the road, with bumber-to-bumper traffic flying by me.

Everyone was in that big hurry you get in when you are on your way home from work, or to work, or to/from Lunch, or wherever,

Not one person slowed down and looked at this beautiful view, that they pass every day ..... No Time I guess!

One guy actually blew his horn at me ..... I guess he thought I would commit suicide by jumping in front of his car?

Oh Well!

Beautiful Farm Land in Forest Virginia

As I was roaming around the area, taking different shots of this great view, I walked down the road just a couple of hundred feet, and I ended up with this shot of the same farm near the Junction of Rt-811 & Rt-221.

Sometimes that's all it takes, a slight shift in perspective and you suddenly have a fantastic picture for your collection.

This view, showing the still functioning barn and surrounding land, is literally a postcard shot, if there ever was one.

Beautiful again!

I just kept walking down the edge of the same busy road, and taking shots like this and the others you see here.

What great colors! What a great view, even without the Autumn colors!

This land just sits there by the busiest intersection in Forest, with cars whizzing by, by the thousands daily, with only the occasional glance towards it's beauty.

The thiught makes me think about the old seventies son by Joni Mitchell; PAVE PARADISE, PUT UP A PARKING LOT,

which I am attaching below for your enjoyment.

I took this shot in the evening on a narrow, twisting County Road just a few miles west of Forest itself.

My wife, and I were driving around, and suddenly we came around a turn in a very twisty country road.

And there was this beautiful shot, just waiting for me and my camera.

So I stopped, pulled off the road and stared for several minutes before I could gather myself and take the shot.

This shot is actually typical of what you will find if you just take the time to drive around the back roads of this still rural area.

John M McNally - Thanks for the kind words. As is so often true with photography, the pictures find you, if you just open your eyes.

John M McNally on June 09, 2018:

I particularly liked the Forest Road in Autumn Don. The colours are glorious, the light and shade even enhance the blue of the road. That is stunning photography, you are lucky to have been there and seen it yourself.

Hi Don... very impressive photography you have here... it is a gift to capture beauty like this. My Grandfather and his family came up through Virginia from RI when they immigrated to Canada. I recall him talking about the country there. He said it was lovely in the fall. Great hub

lrc7815, thanks for the comment and yes, I am checking the colors out each day and getting a few new shots along the way. Have a great day.

Linda Crist from Central Virginia on October 24, 2012:

Hi Don! Welcome back to the burg. It is pretty this year although not as pretty as I had hoped. The Maples are quite pretty but the rains have already taken a lot of leaves down before they could turn. I love this place though. :-) Hope you are enjoying your visit.

Don Bobbitt (author) from Ruskin Florida on October 24, 2012:

Thanks for the view and comment innespin. I love this time of year, and although I now live in Florida, I am presently visiting family and friends in Lynchburg Virginia. The colors are awesome, right now!

Kim Kennedy from uk on October 23, 2012:

Lovely picture, Don, I must try and take some myself while the trees are so beautiful. Love this time of year.

Don Bobbitt (author) from Ruskin Florida on September 15, 2012:

ithabise, My Man! You need to write some railroad stories.

Just go back and remember!

I wait impatiently for some great stories like my Dad told me when he got to take work trips and get out of the Yard!

What a special life style, that so many people know nothing about!

Michael S from Danville, VA on September 15, 2012:

Norfolk Southern is right: Piedmont Division, Linwood (NC) to Lynchburg and over onto the Virginia Division to Roanoke.

Don Bobbitt (author) from Ruskin Florida on September 15, 2012:

ithabise- I am guessing that judging from your train routes that you are a Norfolk Southern railroad man. My dad was a C&O (Chessie) Yard Conductor in Lynchburg for his whole career. I was raised a railroad kid, and even though I have conservative leanings,

I believe in unions, because; As my Daddy always said;

"The Unions fed and clothed you, boy, so I don't want to hear you gripe about who you owe something to!"

Gail Meyers, thanks for viewing my little collection of Autumn Art. Have a great day!

Gail Meyers from Johnson County, Kansas on September 15, 2012:

I love the beautiful pictures! Great hub! Thanks for sharing it.

Michael S from Danville, VA on September 15, 2012:

DB, I'm a former train conductor. I regularly took trains to-and-thru Lynchburg and the Forest area. I always said that the area between Lynchburg and Roanoke was the best natural beauty to be found on the division I was part of. And the winter snow on the mountains and the contrast of light were just as beautiful as the spring and summer colors. Thanks for these photos of my Virginia and the fond memories.

Don Bobbitt (author) from Ruskin Florida on September 15, 2012:

billybuc, thanks for the kind words. I lived within a mile of the farm I showed the pictures of for about ten years and I have family from all around this area. I love to go back, especially in the Autumn, when I can just take an afternoon and drive around what is left of the countryside.

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on September 15, 2012:

What a beautiful area Don; thank you for the tour. I was there once, fifteen years ago, and it is stunning landscape for sure.

Don Bobbitt (author) from Ruskin Florida on August 11, 2012:

Thanks so much Irc7815 for your kind comments.

That intersection provides one of the most impressive views you can find in that area. I make a point of driving by and stopping there every time I go to the 'Burg.

I am glad you enjoyed the Hub.

Linda Crist from Central Virginia on August 11, 2012:

You hav written a hub about my very favorite landscape. I grew up on the county line between Forest and Lynchburg. The farm there at the intersection of 811 and 221 was my stomping ground. I wandered all over that farm on foot and after all these years (50+), it still takes my breath away when I see it. I am so glad you wrote about it and did so beautifully.

Don Bobbitt (author) from Ruskin Florida on November 14, 2011:

You are a funny Man, Tom! But, winter n Michigan is not Funny! You take care of yourself, Dude!

Don Bobbitt (author) from Ruskin Florida on October 29, 2011:

BWD, thanks for the compliment on the pics, but living in CT, i am sure that you see such shots all of the time. And the darned weather sure can make a difference in what you get to enjoy when it comes to the local foliage. Anyway, thanks again for teh comment.

Brian Dooling from Connecticut on October 29, 2011:

great pictures, i especially like country road in autumn, absolutely beautiful! enjoy the beautiful foliage, up here in CT it wasn't a great year, first the hurricane, now snow and many leaves haven't even changed yet!

Don Bobbitt (author) from Ruskin Florida on September 25, 2011:
