The Top 10 Strongest Dog Breeds: An Overview

Dogs come in a wide range of sizes—it is nearly impossible to imagine that a Chihuahua and the Great Dane belongs to one species, but they are.

While dog ownership is often driven by the need for companionship, there are also those who admire agility, vitality, and strength in some breeds of dogs. Huge dogs still often instill fear from onlookers as well as neighbors. While some of these gigantic breeds of dog are obviously the strongest dogs, they may also be docile and are not necessarily characterized by aggressive behavior.

This article will go over the top 10 strongest dogs, with a wide range of temperaments. They can either be adopted as guard dogs, or just be taken in as as pets depending on their level of aggression.

1. Mastiff

  • Weight: 150-240 pounds
  • Height: 28-30 inches
  • Life span: 6-7 years

The Mastiff is a very large and powerful dog breed that may require you to have significant amount of space in your house if you choose to keep one. The Mastiff character can be described as gentle and loyal. The ideal place to own one is when one is living in the country or the more suburban areas.

Despite their size, the breed is not that demanding when it comes to care. The ideal care involves light exercises as provided by regular walks with the standard minimal effort for grooming. Generally the mastiff pet would fall in the category of dogs that have low exercise demands. Their gigantic size and power are what makes them score so highly in the list of the top 10 strongest dogs.

2. Great Dane

  • Weight: 120-200 pounds
  • Height: 28-34 inches
  • Life span: 6-8 years

This dog breed holds the record of the world tallest dog. The Great Dane is a huge and gigantic breed that has previously been used as a working dog. With a height that reaches nearly above a meter, the Great Dane is obviously one of the top 10 strongest dog breeds.

However the size of a Great Dane may be deceitful of its character. They are actually one of the most gentle dog breeds and have a high tolerance of other dogs and animals as well. The Great Dane is often described as 'the gentle giant.' Great Dane puppies may be also mistaken for an ordinary adult breed.

This breed has short hair coat and therefore does not require any serious grooming care or problems. The real enormous effort required when it comes to Great Dane care is when the time comes to bathe this giant. Obviously this is not the kind of a task you want to do on daily basis. However otherwise, they are fairly low maintenance and make for loyal pets.

3. Saint Bernard

  • Weight: 150-270 pounds
  • Height: 28-26 inches
  • Life span: 8-10 years

Saint Bernards are a dog breed that is known for its fast growing rate and increase in weight. The St. Bernard is also often predisposed to a number of genetic conditions when not offered proper care. One of the most known health condition about St. Bernard is the breed susceptibility to dog seizures. This however does not rule out St/ Bernard from the largest and top 10 strongest breeds of dogs—their average weight and height are clearly indicative of the gigantism of this dog breed.

The St. Bernard, much like the previous two top strongest breeds, is not aggressive and offers limitless companionship and loyalty as a pet. You will definitely appreciate owning one and walking him daily. The breed also requires regular exercises for he or she to have a healthy life.

4. Rottweiler

  • Weight: 110-130 pounds
  • Height: 24-27 inches for males, up to 22-25 inches for females
  • Life span: 8-10 years

Rottweilers command an aura of admiration when guard dogs are mentioned. The breed was initially developed for herding and guarding. This therefore explains the fearlessness exhibited by this dog breed. These dogs can turn into ferocious creatures if they are not well socialized and trained. The breed is also very protective of its owner and may even not welcome strangers and show aggression even towards other family members.

Scroll to Continue

They are top in the list of the top 10 dog breeds that are strongest since they have strength that matches that of the largest breeds. In terms of size classification, Rottweilers may either be classified as a large or a medium sized dog breed.

5. Irish Wolfhound

  • Weight: 120-180 pounds
  • Height: 8-28 inches
  • Life span: 6-8 years

The most distinct character of the Irish Wolfhound is its ardent sight that is combined with the power that lies beneath this wooly coat. You may pass off this dog breed as any other large breed, but its swiftness was previously very useful for wolf hunting with dogs. This is why the dog breed was named a wolfhound, after all—the close facial resemblance to wolves is not the actual reason, despite what many people would think.

This dog breed is huge, as portrayed by its weight. The breed also shares a close body resemblance with the greyhound, but it has more muscles and is stronger. This makes it one of the most powerful dog breeds. Irish Wolfhounds are generally devoted and loyal to their owner but they may show territorial protective tendencies, especially in the presence of strangers. This is a common characteristic of dogs that were initially bred for hunting purposes.

6. Boerboel

  • Weight: Up to 180 pounds
  • Height: Up to 28 inches for males, up to 26 inches for females
  • Life span: 10-11 years

The Boerboel is a breed that is associated with South Africa and was bred for guarding purposes. They are aggressive and highly territorial dogs that possess ability to work as if they are tracking and holding wounded game. They possess great strength and agility that is combined with vigor and courage. They protect their owners with a lot of energy and vigorousness. They are very intelligent and cannot be allowed to roam around without keen attention, otherwise they're capable of veering off course and may attack and chase strangers without warning.

7. Great Pyrenees

  • Weight: 110–120 pounds for males, 85-100 pounds for females
  • Height: Up to 32 inches for males, up to 29 inches for females
  • Life span: 10-11 years

The Great Pyrenees is a large dog breed that is commonly associated with guarding sheep in North America. The history of this breed dates years and years back to nearly hundreds of generations ago. The breed is relatively huge, weighing up to a little over a hundred pounds. Their wooly skin has a double coat and beneath it contains a muscular body. This dog possesses a unique characteristic of double dew claws—this is not seen in other dog breeds.

8. American Pit Bull Terrier

  • Weight: 40-60 pounds for males, 30-50 pounds for females
  • Height: Up to 21 inches for males, up to 20 inches for females
  • Life span: 9-15 years

The American Pit Bull Terrier is a dog with a strong chase reflex that can be very friendly if properly trained. They are categorized as medium-sized dogs, and are very sturdy and solid—making them very powerful. They generally have a longer life span of more than a decade, compared to other large dog breeds that don't live nearly as long. They get along with strangers and do well if they are trained and socialized during their early development stage.

Some people regard them as one of the dangerous dog breeds since their strong urge of chasing and seizing prey can turn to be disastrous causing injury to people, other dogs, and cats. This makes them undesirable pets. They are often misunderstood, since proper training and socialization will correct or prevent the development of this aggressive behavior and once done so, they make for very warm and friendly pets.

9. Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

  • Weight: 130-155 lb for males, 110-130 lb for females
  • Height: Up to 30 in for males, up to 27 in for females
  • Life span: 10-12 years

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is a breed that is thought to have originated from the Swiss Alps. They were previously used as working dogs. The general temperament of this breed is docile and sociable. This dog makes for a good family pet that will get along well with all the family members. The only shortcoming of this breed is a relatively short life span compared to other large and medium breeds of dogs.

10. Newfoundland

  • Weight: 130-155 pounds for males, 100-121 pounds for females
  • Height: Up to 30 inches for males, up to 27 inches for females
  • Life span: 8-10 years

Newfoundlands are large dogs that possess the unique ability to swim with its webbed feet and water resistant coat. This dog may weigh as much as 150 pounds, and was originally bred as a working dog. This enormous strength and the fact that they are very loyal dogs make them admirable pets, especially for large dog breed enthusiasts.

Total overall strength a Kangal is most powerful.

Lb for Lb, an APBT blows all of them out of the water. Versace at 71lbs pulled 12,170lbs. A 283lbs Mastiff held the North American Record of 6800lbs. PB pulled almost 2x the weight, and gave up over 200lbs in bodyweight. Versace pulled 171x his bodyweight. A Kangal at 170lbs would have to pull 29,070lbs to equal this feat.

By far the Great Dane. Mine barely nipped me in the head and had a fracture in my head for a while. Also she scared away a big robber and killed two foxes. Though they are softy’s to people they know. Also they are very depressed dogs or they are tired so you won’t see it a lot but when you do oh boy you are in for a treat

I have owned three of the breeds on your list. English Mastiff, Irish Wolfhound, and Newfoundland. The Newfoundland is by far the strongest dog breed in the world. If you are talking combat against one another, no dog would beat an Irish Wolfhound.

Stewie on September 01, 2014:

My Bernese Mountain Dog is draft trained and has out-pulled every Newfie, Rot, Pit, Great Dane AND Mastiff she has ever competed against, even out of class. She's been beaten by a Great Pyrenees, a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, and 2 other Berners. Screw pound-for-pound, she can out-pull just about anything, and if strength (not size or tenacity) is the measure, Berners belong on the list.

Strongest dog breeds are the Tosa Inu, Malakli (Turkish mastiff), sivas Kangal, Boz shepherd, Caucasian Ovcharka, Central Asian shepherd, bully kutta, both the Johnson and Scott American bulldog, Boerboel, Tibetan mastiff (the originator of the mastiff breeds), Dogo Argentino, the American Staffordshire terrier, Alano (Alaunt descendants), Fila, and the American pitbull terrier.

All these breeds should be included or considered in this discussion instead of these western only breeds that have been breed down as lap dogs with no working instincts.

The german shepherd dog should be right below the rottweiler and before the pitbull. I watched a documentary about it. Also, have you ever heard of the caucasian shepherd? Biggest dog breed I have ever seen in my life. They literally look like bears and they're used in russian prisons to scare inmates. Probably should be number one since you seem to be confusing size and strength....

chrisrus on April 04, 2013:

These dogs are dangerous. They are too strong to be a safe housepet. Any dog can bite, even a very calm and submissive one. For example, when injured or sick or confused, any dog can panic and bite. If it's a dog of normal strength, such dog bites are not a serious matter. A bite from a dog like these, however, could cause very serious injury, or even death. The statistics of dogs involved in fatal attacks show that the vast majority of people killed by dogs were killed by one of these super strong dogs. Get a different kind and be safe!

Strongest dog .. you guys is Caucasian

Rob on February 25, 2013:

Kangals, Boerboels, and Caucasian Shepard's are very noteworthy. These dogs were bred specifically for not only size, strength, guardian instincts, but to fearlessly defend and, if necessary, kill predators such as wolves, hyenas, cheetahs, even some cases lions in the most dangerous environments known to man. These breeds are second to none when it comes to "strongest" both physically and mentally. Most of the breeds mentioned on this list are not ideal working breeds and would not survive extreme conditions.
