Jed the Movie Dog

Meet Jed the Wolf Dog!

Jed the wolf dog is the much-loved star of the films White Fang and The Journey of Natty Gann. He is part wolf and part Alaskan Malamute.

Jed starred in three films, but is best known for portraying White Fang in the film of the same name, starring alongside a young Ethan Hawke.

I first encountered Jed (and, indeed, the young John Cusack) in The Journey of Natty Gann, and immediately fell in love with this canine star, even more so thanks to his later incredible portrayal of White Fang. Jed also appeared in the classic film The Thing.

Here is my tribute to Jed, the movie dog.

@anonymous: How wonderful! I think I was about 9 or 10 when I saw Natty Gann and then loved seeing White Fang as well. Fell completely in love with Jed and both movies. You were so lucky to meet Jed! :)

anonymous on March 09, 2013:

I was an extra in White Fang and I watched The Journey of Natty Gann before I was in White Fang. I remember being more excited about seeing the Natty Gann dog than Ethan Hawke. I was 11 at the time. I got to pet Jed as he walked by me. I wish I had pictures of him with me. I was an extra in the native village and I loved it and have great memories from that time.

anonymous on February 13, 2013:

I love Jed I have a wolf dog and he is the double of Jed. And I called him Jed because they are beautiful animals. And Jed will always be white fang I love the film its what made me get a wolf dog. And I cry my eyes out at the end.

anonymous on December 27, 2012:

I just watched "White Fang". love it sooo much! Jed made me cried a lot in this movie, I wish I could see him in person and touch him.

anonymous on December 02, 2012:

Just watched White Fang. Didn't realize that was Ethan Hawke, but not like it mattered cuz I was fully smittened with Jed. I can't believe how time has flown by and Jed has already left the world for 17 years. Jed's so, so natural in this movie...I am absolutely in love with this beautiful figure. Makes me teary eyed all the time, watching movies like these. Thank god they didn't make him die or anything in this one!

anonymous on October 06, 2012:

I only saw 'The Thing' with him in which he portrayed one of the most haunting movies scenes ever - in a typical John Carpenter long sequence shot. I am talking about the scene where he enters the hallway and slowly walks down it. He wants to go into the room to the left but decides to go further and instead enters a room to the right where we see the shadow of a man sitting on a chair/bed on the wall. And Jed (The Thing) enters that room and we see the man's shadow turning to him him before the scene fades off.

How fitting also that he is a 'hybrid' as he portraits an alien that only looks like a dog.

Kudos for giving that wonderful 'actor' a little shrine on the web. He was great.

I have been watching White Fang since I was a kid and now I'm 29 and I still love that movie so very much. So much in fact, that I have my own wolf-dog. Jed was such a beautiful and amazing creature. Jed is the reason why I am such a big lover of wolves today. I'm going to spend some time at a wolf sanctuary for the birthday and I'll be thinking of Jed while I'm there. The world misses you Jed!

anonymous on January 26, 2012:

I watched White Fang again and it brought back memories. This last year I lost my Malemute/Wolf dog after being a member of my family for 13 years. Jed will always be a reminder to my daughter and I of our beloved Silver Mist. Maybe they are romping around together...

anonymous on December 24, 2011:

I love Jed! These dogs are stunning to me. They are powerful yet regal.

anonymous on December 13, 2011:

Sorry for my english... it's not my mother-language.

I saw both "The Thing" and "White Fang" ... in both films I was amazed by how good was the dog that starred the "thing" in Carpenter's movie, and "White Fang", the wolf-dog made ââfamous by Jack London's novel, in the film with Ethan Hawke, however, ... I did not know it was the same dog!

Really... a great actor! Many of those who today call themselves "actors" would have much to learn from him ... ;)

anonymous on November 09, 2011:

My family and I absolutely fell in love with this perceptive and beautiful wolf-dog in The Journey of Natty Gann and we're looking forward to seeing his performance in White Fang!

@anonymous: Hi Mike, I'd like for you tell Clint, thank you. From a wolfdog owner, for the light he's shined on a breed that has gotten a bad rep that is undeserved. As a boy I read White Fang, and have had many dogs in my life. About 14 years ago I had a chance to adopt a wolf dog. In the last 14 years, I've had my Dog (Beau), has been one of the best experinces of my life. You'll never experience anything in life like a wolf dog. There personalities are unlike any dog and loyalty unsurpased. That being said to anyone that reads this, a wolf dog is not for a person who doesn't plan on spending tons & tons of time with them, doesn't plan on going away for long vacations and can not be a pushover. They are like having a teenager that constantly test the boundaries. My dog was my dog, and only listen to myself and my wife, And only after my wife and I were together for 2 to 3 years would he even acknowledge her existence. But after that, she was in love with him and him her Until his dying days 11/19/2010. I could never own a regular dog again, and when I'm ready will find another. That's why I started looking for Clint to see if Jed has a blood line. If you have any info on this it would be greatly appreciated. Again thank clint for me.

anonymous on July 06, 2011:

hi, i was just wondering from mike..if you knew who jed's breeder was?

Missmerfaery444 (author) on June 27, 2011:

@anonymous: That is wonderful to know! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of Jed here.

anonymous on June 27, 2011:

I knew Jed am still friends with his owner Clint. It is ironic that Clint also played the cruel owner with the whip in the Natty Gann movie. In reality Clint loved Jed dearly all his life. Jed was always well cared for, and was allowed to wander freely on the property where he lived until the ripe old age of 18.

anonymous on June 18, 2011:

What a beautiful dog,Jed, was..I have seen him in two of his films, and was amazed at his acting skills, what an intelligent animal, and what skills his trainer has.
