My Fear of Lizards

WARNING!!! If you're afraid of lizards, this hub may contain some distressing images.

It wasn't until I got so mad at my husband that I realized I have a weird but serious fear of lizards.

What made me so mad? It's because he wanted to get the lizard that fell on our bed. And because I knew too well that he would get it just to scare me. I stopped him, but he still attempted so I shouted at him.

He didn't realized that I was so scared and neither did I, until I noticed that my heart was palpitating, my hands were shaking and I was having goosebumps all over me. I gave him a silent treatment afterwards while I tried to reflect on what happened.

Why am I so afraid of lizards? I cannot recall an incident when I was bitten or hurt, if that's possible, by these harmless wall crawlers which may have triggered the phobia. In fact, I can't even remember when exactly I began to be scared of them.

And I wasn't really scared of being around them. We've always had lizards on our walls and I can still act normal even when I'm a few feet away from them. It's just the thought of somebody holding a lizard close to me that shoots an eerie feeling down my spine and a sense of fear that I cannot describe nor understand.

Fear of Lizards

Scoliodentosaurophobia is the specific phobia term for fear of lizards while Herpetophobia refers to fear of reptiles in general.

Like most phobias, fear of lizards usually starts with a "traumatizing" experience that a person had with these creatures. Although traumatizing here doesn't mean something that hurt or caused extreme pain or shock.

Someone said that he developed the phobia when, as a child, he saw a detached lizard's tail still moving as if it has a life of its own. It was like the stuff of horror stories and he never got over it.

Another recalled an incident when a lizard fell on her neck when she was a teenager. Its cold, soft, gooey skin startled her and sent shivers all over her body. Now, just looking at lizards reminds her of that feeling and she couldn't stand it.

In my case, I really can't pinpoint a particular triggering event. As a child, I knew I was partly afraid of lizards. But I wasn't deathly terrified of them. So it could be that one of my playmates caught one and held it close to me, which intensified my fear of lizards. That would be a good explanation why I can be in the same room with lizards but I go nuts, and fly out of the room screaming, when someone holds it in his hand.

Overcome Your Fear

After a few hours of not talking to him, my husband approached me and said sorry. I said sorry too for shouting at him. I then told him that feeling such an intense fear is not a pleasant experience and is definitely not something to make fun of.

He said he didn't want to make fun of me but rather, he wants me to overcome my fear. And the only way he knows that will make that happen is if I touch a lizard (I shudder at the thought). I told him that eventually I want to cure the phobia, but I'm just not ready yet. When will I be ready? I don't know.

But for those who are resolved and determined to rid themselves of this weird aversion to these "creepy" crawlers, here are some things you can do to prep yourself in facing your greatest fear. I, on the other hand, will still think about it.

  1. Surround yourself with pictures of lizards or make all your screen wallpapers a picture of lizard. The more-realistic looking, the better. The idea is to get used to seeing them and looking at them even just in pictures.
  2. When you're a little braver, you can buy lizard-like toys. Don't buy the plastic ones, the rubber lizard is better because it resembles real lizards in texture and softness. Again, the more-realistic looking, the better. You can put it in the refrigerator for a few hours so it'll feel cold, just like a real lizard when you touch it.
  3. You can also visit a zoo and watch lizards live. If they stare at you, stare back at them. Talk to them in your head, bully them, say anything to make yourself feel superior over them.
  4. If you see a lizard near you, ignore it, or at least pretend to ignore it. Better yet, scare it away. Most lizards are easily startled so just a sharp thud or a whack on the table will make it run away. This will empower you and make you realize that a lizard has more reasons to be afraid of you than you to be afraid of it.
  5. Buy a lizard or ask someone to catch one for you and put it in a terrarium. Place the terrarium near your desk or near areas where you often stay. Look at it everyday and get use to its presence inside a room with you. Touch the glass to get the feeling of being close to it, without actually touching it.
  6. And when you think you're already brave enough, slowly open the lid and touch it. If you can, hold it in your hand for 5 minutes. Then everyday, hold it a little longer. Keep doing that until you can take it out of its cage and let it crawl on your arm. Get use to the feeling of it crawling on your body.

Then pat yourself in the back, because you have just overcome your fear of lizards. As for me, I can probably skip steps 1-4 and go straight to touching a lizard. But that's not going to happen anytime soon. Not just yet.

noha on August 10, 2018:

I am petrified of lizards. Terrified of them. Terrorised by them. It scares the living crap out of me. I hate it with everything in me. Dead or alive, just a glance of it gives me chills and if i see one near me, i literally get panic attacks. And i CANNOT take any advices from above. I'll just distant myself from it as much as i can and keep ignoring it's existence and pray that it'd go extinct one day

A lizard man or alien or something came into my room when I was 5 years old. Please dont laugh or judge. It's true.

shanti on May 07, 2015:

Hi I am from india. I never had a phobia for lizards as a kid until i herd a superstituous myth that if a lizard fell on your head, the head of your family would die. So since then i started running away from any room that had lizards and eventyally i developed such intense phobia that i started hating everthin about it and fearing the mere sight of it. Im scared that some day if a lizard comes into contact with my body I may die of a heart attack! Thanks for this article, im planning to actually give it a try.... But as of now readin the last step has made me so nauseous and giving me chills.

Jodie on July 23, 2014:

I actually love lizards! When you get over your fear if them you can see that they are just as good of a pet as a dog or cat! Most lizards are attracted to warmth and will sit with you wherever you are. I have 6 leopard geckos and they are so friendly. They are so calm and beautiful. Having a pet lizard is truly an amazing thing so getting over your fear of lizards is amazingly rewarding :)

Deepak Dixit on July 03, 2014:

very nice hub i like it very much.

Cassie on June 05, 2014:

I guess I'm the odd ball. I know phobia's are irrational and there is usually not reason for them, but I personally adore lizards and reptiles. I own a Bearded Dragon who is one of the greatest pets I've ever had. She's my little cuddle bug and will snuggle up with me on the couch while I pay video games or watch TV. That probably sounds super gross to most of you though which I understand, fears are never rational.

But I'd personally suggest trying to follow the steps to get over your fears as there's really no reason to dislike them so much. I don't expect people to completely get over their dislike; but at least learn to co-exist. I hate spiders with a passion and they freak me out, but I still will release them outside instead of killing them because it's my way of coexisting. I'll never hold one or touch one with my bare hands though!

Also lizards are no more dirty than a dog. Heck, mine is cleaner than one. I bathe her at least 3 times a week. Haha.

Mary on April 15, 2014:

I`m terrified of lizards to. I live in south Carolina and I sometimes encounter them in the back yard. Of course, the mere sight of them cause me to dash back into my house at top speed, screaming my head off. My family thinks its funny.

My triggering experience happened when I was very young, about 3 or 4. It was a summer night and I was inside. I was summer, so I was wearing shorts and a short sleeved shirt. I felt something tickly and turned around to see a little lizard scurrying up the back of my bare leg. Like any toddler, I immediately screamed. My brother removed the lizard and tossed it outside. To this day the experience of the little reptile climbing up my leg, tickling my bare skin with it`s tiny feet has tramatized me and I have been scared of lizards to this day.

Thanks for the advice, I`ll try it.

I hate lizards so much that when I encounter one in my home, I don't just want it scared away, I want someone to kill it so it won't come back! I'm even scared of the dead lizards. I live in Jamaica, and there are so many geckos here- which I fear more than any other type of lizard. Yuck!

I wanted to vomit at the thought of your program to cure lizards because it seemed so scary. I know however that that's the only way to cure yourself of a lizard phobia.

Tutupeg on May 16, 2012:

I hate the very sight of lizards and I believe all lizards hate me being around in their presence. Either they tend to drive me away or when I am crazy or angry I just drive them away to the farthest corner until they slip away or hide somewhere I can't see them. Actually, they are sweet little creatures but I blame the fear on my childhood as I grew up hearing tales & legends about lizard monsters and how creepy they are. I am on the whole very comfortable with other reptiles like crocs, anaconda, large snakes, frogs etc.

I don't know why I hate lizards but I do and I have for as long as I remember. I'm sooo relived that other people hate or are afraid of lizards. Everyone is constantly telling me that lizards aren't gonna hurt me. I know that but they still creep me out. Every time I see one I freeze and back up. I need to get over the fear.

mashon on April 08, 2012:

You should allow for people to choose multiple choices in your survey. Whenever I see a lizard, I would scream at the top of my lungs, get sweaty and shaky and freeze on the spot. Its great to hear that there are others out there who have a phobia of lizards too. My fear of lizards is so bad that I have nightmares frequently about lizards crawling on top of me in bed. I'll wake up still feeling the sensation of lizards crawling all over me.
