What Different Kinds of Poodles Are There?

The Poodle is a fluffy, curly coated dog from the Non-Sporting Group of dogs, originated from France/Germany and also known as the Pudel in German and the Caniche in French. The poodle is one among the most popular dog breed in the world and ranked seventh most popular dog breed in the USA.

The origin of the Poodle is not clear, the majority of cynologists believe the Poodle originated in Germany, but some cynologists believe, the Poodle is descended from the Barbet dog which were originated from France, known as the "Caniche" (French for "duck dog"), and is a national dog of France. The poodle was originally bred to retrieve hunt from waterfowl, as a gun dog and the smaller Poodles were developed to perform in the circus.

There are many types of Poodles are available, based on their size, and the height of the Poodle is the most important for distinguishing the variety of the Poodle. The seven types of poodles are,

1: Standard Poodle, 2: Medium Poodle, 3: Miniature Poodle, 4: Toy Poodle, 5: Royal Standard Poodle, 6: Teacup Poodle and 7: Other "Moyen, Klein, Dwarf Poodle or French Pudle".

The Different Varieties Of Poodle

There are many different types of Poodles are available, based on their size (height and weight). The AKC, and some other Major kennels, and FCI have have different classifications about their varieties, and standards.

  • The American (AKC), British (BKC), and other major kennels KC, and PCA recognize only Three Types of Poodle.

  • The "FCI - Federation Cynologique International" - the Kennel Club of Belgium and the European countries (France, Austria, Belgium, Germany and Netherlands), recognize Four Types of Poodle.

  • In addition to these main types of Poodle, you can also find another three types of poodle.

Types Based on Recognition by Height

There are many different variant of Poodles are available, based to their size (Height). The standard of size varies on recognition by the different kennel Clubs, the height of a Poodle is in between 18 to 22 inches, that can stands up to 25 inches.

Height : Over 20 Inch

  • Royal-sized or King Poodle: Over 22 Inch (Un recognized)
  • Standard Poodle: 18-24 Inch (FCI Standard)

Height : 15 - 20 Inch

  • Standard Poodle: Over 15 Inch (AKC Standard)
  • Medium Poodle: 14–18 Inches (FCI Standard)

Height : 10 - 15 Inch

  • Miniature Poodle: 10-15 Inch (AKC Standard)
  • Miniature Poodle: 11-14 Inch (FCI Standard)
  • Toy Poodle : Up to 11 Inch (FCI Standard)
  • Other (Klein/ Moyen/ French Poodle): 10-15 Inch

Height : Up to 10 Inch

  • Toy Poodle : Up to 10 Inch (AKC Standard)
  • Teacup Poodle : Up to 9 Inch (Un recognized)

Other Types of Poodle

There are many other names are used by breeders to market the Poodles, but these types are unofficial and not recognized by the major kennels and AKC (American Kennel Association).

  • Royal-sized or King Poodle

Royal-sized or King Poodle is an unofficial term used by breeders to market largest sized standard poodles. Breeders define royal-sized poodles height standing over 25 inches (Adult) and weighing more than 60 pounds.

  • The Klein, Moyen Poodle or French Pudle

The Klein, Moyen or French Poodle is another name used for small to medium sized Poodle. The medium sized poodle or known as Klein Poodle in Germany, that means small in German.
The French Pudle or Moyen Poodle is the popular name for small to medium size poodle in France, the Moyen means medium in French.

  • Teacup poodle, Micro-poodle or Pocket poodle

The Teacup poodle, Micro-poodle or Pocket poodle is an unofficial term used by breeders to market the smallest size of Poodles, that claimed to be four pounds or less as adults and less than nine inches in size.
