What is a Teddy Bear Puppy?

A Teddy Bear puppy is a designer breed that is a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Bichon Frise. The Teddy Bear is an excellent choice of pet for a family with children. It is a small dog that will max out at about 12 inches in height and will weigh somewhere between 11-16 pounds. Being a designer breed, they are bred for nothing other than their looks. They got it right with this one. It is the cutest little puppy you could ever find. We got our Teddy Bear a little less than a year ago and she has become a very special part of our family.

What Does a Teddy Bear Look Like?

A Teddy Bear puppy can be brown, black, or a combination of both with white. I have only seen pictures of the brown and black puppies. All of the puppies I have seen at the kennels were white with black and brown spots. They are very fluffy with round fluffy heads. They resemble a teddy bear. Therefore, the name Teddy Bear.

They have hair instead of fur. They are considered hypo-allergenic since they do not shed and have very low dander. Our Teddy Bear does not shed at all. It is great since she has a lot of hair.

A Teddy Bear adult dog looks just like a little puppy. They remain cute the entire time.

What makes a Teddy Bear?

A Teddy Bear is a designer breed dog. They are a mix between a Shih Tzu and a Bichon Frise. Both very cute dogs. They combine to make this adorable little Teddy Bear.

Other Designer Breed dogs are Yorki Poos, Cocka Poos, and Bichon Poos. These are mixes between a Yorki, Cocker Spaniel, Bichon and a Poodle.

There is no consistent breed standard for the Teddy Bear since they are not a purebred dog. Things like temperament, genetics, and health cannot be traced like it can in a pure bred dog. Also, they cannot be AKC registered as a pure bred dog would be. However, the AKC has agreed to recognize the Teddy Bear after a few generations have been bred. The name will likely be Zuchon instead of Teddy Bear.

Teddy Bears are sometimes called Zuchon, Shichon, or Shuchon.

Is a Teddy Bear Puppy Good With Children?

Absolutely. Our Teddy Bear plays with our 12, 9, 4, and 3 year old every day. The smaller children can be rough with her at times. She has never snapped at the children or anything close to it. She is very playful yet gentle. She sleeps with one child every night. She rotates between the children so everyone gets a turn.

Teddy Bears like to go for walks but can tire easily. They will run off a lot of energy and then crash for a couple of hours to nap. The children run through the yard with her every afternoon and she loves it. She jumps and plays with the children and never hurts them.

Teddy Bears will bark if someone pulls up into the driveway or if your child is playing around with it. It is not a yippy dog. Our Teddy Bear rarely barks. It is usually when the children are chasing it or it is chasing them when it barks.

Puppy Essentials

Teddy Bear Care

Pay close attention to the Teddy Bear's hair and make sure it does not get matted. They tend to get hot spots if hair is too long and matted. It is best to have your Teddy Bear groomed once every 8-10 weeks.

Just like many other small dogs, they tend to have problems with their eyes and ears. Make sure their ears are cleaned routinely.

Teddy Bears can live up to 17 years if taken care of and loved.

Teddy Bears can be stubborn when it comes to house training. Be consistent and it will happen.

Should You Get a Teddy Bear Puppy?

Yes. You will be very happy with your decision. They are so very cute and cuddly. Their temperament is great and they will be your loyal friend as long as they live. The Teddy Bear is great with young children and adults. They also get along well with other family pets. We have a poodle and our Teddy Bear fits right in with him. The Teddy Bear is the dog to get.

My wife sent me this link and we have a Bichon and a Teddy Bear. Jilli is adorable Angela...Pierre (B) and Jacques (TB) and we love them to death, but they can be moody at times, no kisses if they don't want to, hehehe..If I'm playing hard with Pierre, Jacques will start barking, being so protective, it's so cute to watch. Wished I could post pics of them for all to see.

Thanks for commenting Carol P. As we have had a little more time with our little teddy bear I have realized how destructive mine is. We did not have a hard time training her ....she seems to do ok with barking when she wants to go out and do her business. BUT she is still chewing up every and anything left on the floor by the kids... pillows until the stuffing comes out.... barbie dolls hands and feet.... pencils etc. After having her for two years now I would have thought that would have stopped. I get so mad at her and then she jumps up in my lap to cuddle. I can't help but love her. We might have had an easier time training Jelli because she followed Peanut Butter , our poodle, outside every time he went. ???

Carol P on December 30, 2012:

Ok well teddy bear puppies are cute and everything but they are the HARDEST thing to train. We have a 10 month old teddy bear and she will not train we have tried nearly everything. if you are willing to devote an extreme amount of time and money than go ahead and get one.

Ari - I bet you have one cute little puppy. We love our teddy bear mix... she is so good with the children. Unfortunately she is still in the chewing stage and nothing gets passed by when it comes to chewing. It will soon be over.. that is the only complaint I have with her. Good luck with your new puppy! Thanks so much for stopping in and checking out my teddy bear.

Wonderful Hub! I just adopted (what we think is) a Bichon / Poodle mix. We jokingly say that he's like a teddy bear, but we weren't aware of this "breed". Great Hub! Love the photos and the video.
