Six arguments in favor of and against cloning

Why Cloning?

Cloning animals has lead to a huge discussion on science, religion and the role of tehcnology in our everyday lives.

I will be posting two articles, this one dedicated to providing 6 strong arguments in the favor of cloning and another which provides 6 arguments against cloning.

Dolly the sheep, the first cloned animal

Dolly the sheep, the first cloned animal

Arguements #1-2

1. One very important fact is the multiple benefits of cloning. It can help rejuvenate, reverse heart attacks, infertility, plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, and take away defective genes and many other important benefits. It does this by allowing scientists to remove or create new cells.

2.The second fact is stem cells. These are cells, which are blank cells, and can become any other type of cell. They are used for cloning, making it faster for doctors to find donors for sick people. If somebody was severely burned and needed more skin cells, a doctor would just have to clone a few stem cells, to make new skin cells for the patient. By doing this, it would help many people.

Arguements #3-4

3.A third fact is the fact is that if there were cloned human embryos, which did not produce therapeutic stem cell as it did not divide enough times, could theoretically be a perfect donor for a patients. This is because the patient would not reject it as it was a clone.

4.Cloning can help parents or couples, who are infertile or have lost their children, to get a child or a clone of their child. Also, this could be used to help parents whose child is sick to make a clone of that child and then use the cloned child to donate blood, skin cells, etc. to help the sick child become better.

Arguements #5-6

5.In Montreal a herd of 50 cloned sheep have a gene which allows them to make spider silk in their milk. It is said that this silk can be used to create bulletproof vests. By using this process, they can make many other animals in this world to create things which can be helpful to the environment and the people. They can also clone endangered animals, and help take away some disadvantages of the animals, enabling them to survive in different climates. This can be used for endangered animals in the forests, which are slowly being destroyed.

6.Cloning is ethical because of some Canadian guidelines, which say that cloning is morally sound as long as some rules are followed. They state that human embryos can not be used after 14 days since fertilization. Then the scientists can use the cells from the embryo to study and practice cloning.

6 Arguements Against Cloning

Here are the counter arguements for these 6, in an effort to keep the arguements on both sides balanced.

1.If a child was cloned from a person who was alive for a long time and then died, they would have expectations to live up to. They would probably live a very stressful life and might suffer from emotional problems, knowing that they were not an individual, but a clone.

2.A big problem with cloning is the fact that many health problems occur with most of the animals that were cloned. Dolly, the famous cloned sheep, suffered from premature arthritis and progressive lung disease. This was at the age of 6 while most sheep live up to the age of 12.

How does cloning work?

3.Another fact is that if an infertile couple wants a child and gives their requirements, but if there is a mistake with a child, such as it does not have a high intelligence level, the parents might reject the child. There would be a lot more rejected or "defective" children if human cloning is allowed and a lot more children would be put up for adoption or into foster homes.

4.There are also many people who believe that life is a very valuable thing and that by using embryos for research and then to destroy them is the same as murder. Some believe that cloning is a crime, as it does not allow a cloned person to live a normal life and that if a child is not born then the embryo is destroyed.

5.In many religions, they do not allow abortions, putting people or dogs to "sleep", etc. and cloning would fall into one of these categories. Many of these people probably believe that cloning is evil and this it is a sin. They believe that God wanted humans to help with the reproduction by sexual intercourse. Some state that cloning would fall into the same category as adultery or fortification.

6.There is a belief that some people would abuse the science of cloning and maybe even use it to create people solely for the purpose of evil deeds, such as war, slavery, etc. Many people in this world would do this and in least developed or developing countries, people with a lot of money could do almost anything. They could create cloned humans and then sell them for a profit. The profit from this would probably be quite high and people with bad intentions would probably look at this as a way to make money.

What do you think?

The purpose of these pages is to create a place for an even discussion of the role of cloning in our everyday lives.

I'd like to leave the next area for comments for users to put in their 2 cents about how they observe cloning.

Current cloning is only on the physical. How about the mental aspect ?

I think cloning is good if we use it using our brain.

There is a really interesting case of animal cloning where they actually get a dalmation to sing in a kind of choir..super bizarre check it out

No Cloning on November 01, 2012:

TAYLOR IS RIGHT!!!! the cloned human would still be a person! and they don't start out at the same age so by the time you would get the organ you need it would already be too late! most endangered animal's DNA is too damaged to even use!

? on February 28, 2012:

Well everything is all because of humans... endangered species...they are disappearing because of us..

Elliot on July 27, 2011:

Cloning's a good thing. It could really help save endangered species. We have some DNA from dead animals and if we cloned these dead animals we could add biodiversity to endangered species. Why not fix our mistakes and bring these species back?

Also, Taylor, you're an idiot. Clones don't have the exact same personality traits, so people wouldn't lose their values. They're like identical twins, and I wouldn't describe one twin as a "multiple" as the other twin.

I think Cloning is a good thing to do because it helps sick people a lot. Think about if you have a sick child and you could make a clone of that child to actually save him or her by giving away, of what they have too much and the other has too less. But I also agree that Cloning can get very dangerous if the wrong people use it.%Pr

Very helpful thank you for posting this. =]

Taylor on September 16, 2009:

cloning will impact the world negativly. Everyone in the world are individuals and if there were multiples of one person then the person will loose their values. Science experiments would be taken to far on clones and the clones would be taken advantage of. constant research on them and honestly it eouldnt be shocking if they were just used for their vitals for humans that needed a new organ and what not.
