The Origin and Breed History

Rajapalayam is a town, in Virudhunagar district, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Rajapalayam dogs were developed from this place and got their name "Rajapalayam Dog", basically they were bred to be the shorthand dogs, many people believe they were used in breeding Dalmatian dogs.

Until a few years ago, it was also difficult to find Rajapalayam dogs of this pure breed in their native place. These dogs fell into bad times and they were almost extinct due to negligence and cross breeding with the native Pariah dogs, but there have been efforts to revive the breed since 1981, and now you can find pure breed Rajapalayam dogs in some of the kennels in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Bangalore Karnataka.
