Searching for Butch!

For weeks my hubby researched dog books….he had suddenly become obsessed with finding Butch. Butch was the puppy that his mom brought home when he was a young man and still living at home. I told him, you can’t find Butch, he was one in a million.

He said that he read that the Australian Terrier is the smartest of all the dog breeds and he wants one. Every day he read the dog books, he looked in the newspaper to find a breeder and I finally went on line to find an Australian Terrier breeder.

Hubby took my list and kept calling Australian Terrier breeders and most would say, I don’t have a litter right now maybe later this year or all my puppies are spoken for, until he found Ann, who had one thirteen week old red-male available.

Ann sent us pictures of him and you only had to see that sweet little face to fall in love with him…I gave in and we told Ann we would take him. We made the deal and Ann said she would ship him via American Airlines and we could pick him up at DFW airport at Air Cargo and she would make reservations for the following day. We waited patiently for her to call us with the flight number, so we could be there when the puppy arrived.

Arriving at Love Field!

Ann called to say that none of the airlines will airship pets in the cargo hold any longer like they use to and she purchased a round trip ticket for herself and a one way ticket for Chipper, to fly into Love Field in Dallas on flight 645, Southwest Airlines, arrival time 1:25 pm.

I ask my son Walter to take me to pick him up at Love Field airport and he quickly said yes.

You Chipper are the most precious little boy.

The start of the Adventure: The Arrival

  • 1st day. My son Walter and I arrived a little bit early, we had to park a ways away and walk to the arrival gate. I called Ann to tell her we were at the arrival gate in front of Dunkin Donuts. Walter had a couple of stale donuts and the plane landed. Then we saw them Ann was in a wheel chair being pushed by an airport attendant. She had a big red duffel bag with holes in it on her lap and when I opened it up there he was.

All heads turned as Chipper trotted with us as we headed downstairs with Ann to the departure gate and we visited with her for a bit. Then Chipper trotted along with us to Walter’s truck. We put him in the crate that I brought with us.

We stopped at a pet store on the way home where Walter takes Bear for a bath and we gave Chipper a bath.

Hubby's first sight of Chipper

When we arrived at home, the first thing hubby said was: “I love him, he is beautiful.”

I took him outside to pee and poop every hour until midnight and we spoiled him, and played with him.

Me, Walter and Chipper played and got to know each other. Chipper was exhausted

He slept all night without making a sound. In fact I wondered if he knew how to bark.

Chipper looking foxy

Chipper looking foxy

  • 2nd day, February 3, 2017, up at 7:00 a.m. Chipper knows that I am awake and he starts to whine, I quickly dress and ask him, Chipper do you want to go out? And he barks: “yes, yes I’ll pee in the floor if you don’t take me out” and as soon as we got on the grass Chipper peed. I praised him, gave him a treat, took him back inside and ask, Chipper, do you want to eat? He turned his head and looked at me as if to say, what? Then he heard the sound that the dog food bag being opened makes, and began to wag his tail and you would think he would break himself in two. Again I ask, Chipper, do you want to eat? And repeated eat.

I held Chipper’s dish where he could see it and told him to sit and pushed his little rump down gently and he sat but only for a moment as I took a few bits and let him take it from my hand, put his dish down and played in his food as he ate, (instructions from my son, who says that doing this will keep him from biting someone if they should go near him when he is eating.)

The minute Chipper finished eating, I took him back outside, (also instructions from my son) and as soon as we were outside Chipper pooped.

It seems like puppies/dogs are like meat grinders ‘you put the food in the chute it comes out the other end.’

After his much needed pit stop, Chipper played with his hedge-hog and tried to get into everything just like a little baby, and believe he needs almost as much care.

After I got a little bit of cleaning done in the house, I took him for a long walk. I was exhausted, but Chipper was just getting started and he was playing by my feet.

Hubby sat reading the Dallas Morning News, he found an article he wanted to re-read later and laid that section of the paper on the floor by his chair. Chipper was laying on the floor by my feet chewing on a piece of raw-hide, I was engrossed in a fellow Hubber’s hub and when I looked down Chipper was not there. OMG, what is he into, I got up and hurried to look for him. As I rounded the corner of the kitchen island, Chipper yelped and I hit the floor flat on my face. I did not see him, as he ran to follow me and I tripped and fell over him. Chipper was delighted he jumped on my back, barked and kissed my face all over….we sat in the floor and played for a while then I took him outside to pee and back in his crate to prevent another fall.

First Accident in the house

What the hell? Hubby yelled! He peed on my paper! No, he peed on the paper he thought you put there for him to pee on.

7 p.m. I said, Chipper do you want to eat? And, I thought he would break himself in half and went to the water bowl for a drink and kept looking back at me to see when I would let him have his food. I took him outside to do his business, and he was a happy camper and I was tired and sat down and let him play around my feet.

I had purchased Chipper a skunk bottle holder and he got the bottle out right away.

When I took him outside to do his business that night and I got a whiff of a real skunk, I could not help, but think what if the real one came our way would he chase it? It looks like Pepe Le Pew, his toy.

I visualize my brother and his wife's experience with their dog and the skunk. The day they had new carpeting installed, my brother took the dog, Foxy Lady outside and when she saw the skunk, she chased it and it sprayed her, my brother yelled "you stupid dog" my sister-in-law opened the door to see what was going on and the dog ran in and was trying to rub the skunk spray off on the new carpet.

  • 3rd day through 6th. Are all pretty much the same except he has learned several words/commands and he sits when I tell him to.

Am I going crazy or what?

  • 7th day. I opened the door and let Chipper out. Right away he hiked his leg and peed. I gave him a treat, told him what a good boy he is.

Again Chipper raised leg, I did not see any pee, but I gave him a treat and praised him again. Third time Chipper raised his leg and I watched closely but did not see any pee, but gave him a treat and praise.

Am I going crazy or what?

Fourth time, Chipper raised his leg and no pee came out, I only brought four treats…I gave him the last one and praise.

Fifth time Chipper raised his leg, but no pee comes out. I had no treats left so I praised him. He sat down in front of me look up as if to say, where is my treat? I showed him my hands were empty and he barked.

Looks like he (Chipper is a keeper)

I am sure we will have many more adventures as time goes by.

Just now saw your response to my last message -- that I can't believe was so long ago! I would love to meet Walter. How are he and Chipper getting along? Chipper must be middle-aged by now.

Time goes so fast. Hope all is well with you and that you are taking care to be safe from this virus that seems to get worse and worse, but that Trump keeps saying will disappear one of these days . . .

Always enjoy reading about Chipper. Our pets give such joy Shyron and ask for so little in return.

Shyron E Shenko (author) from Texas on October 27, 2019:

Au fait, thank you for the comments and post to HP & AH but, Chipper is not the only male in my life and I want you to meet him (Walter) I told him about you and he will come with me to meet you, only somehow I lost your number and need you to call me to make arrangements to meet my new love.

Although he is responsible for my MIA most of the time and the rest of the time is spent on the dance floors and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Blessings my dear friend.

C E Clark from North Texas on October 26, 2019:

Hope Chipper is a help to you in getting through the days and nights so you won't feel so alone. Take care. Blessings, dear friend . . .

To be 91º tomorrow, our first venture into the 90s for this year. Not looking forward to it myself. Blessings dear friend . . .

Thank you Peg, for your comments. I hurt for a few day after I hit the floor, but I am better and the second time did not hurt that much, but Chipper was in his glory to be able to jump on honey cover me with kisses.

I guess I need to hold on to things to stay standing.

Hope all is well with you

Blessings my dear friend.

Peg Cole from North Dallas, Texas on October 09, 2017:

That face! What an adorable little guy! I love him already and he does seem to be very smart and a quick learner. I'm eager to hear about more of his adventures. I hope you didn't get hurt when you tripped over him. I have to hold on to things when I walk so the dogs don't knock me down. Ours weigh in at 55 and 105 pounds - our big babies.

Shyron E Shenko (author) from Texas on July 19, 2017:

Anita, thank you for the comment, yes he is adorable and he loves to chew shoes, a few days ago he got one of my husband's, he laughed when Chipper chewed-up one of mine when I was wearing it. Chipper brought his rawhide chewy laid it on my shoe and began to chew and kept on going after the chewy was gone.

I am glad you got your computer cable fixed and everything is okay.

Blessings and hugs

Anita Hasch from Port Elizabeth on July 17, 2017:

Hi Shyron, what a cute little dog and clever too. Lifts his leg to get a treat. They can be so adorable and naughty too. When mine was a puppy she bit through my laptops cable. I had just replaced the charger cable the previous day and had paid a fortune for it. Thank goodness somebody could fix it. Blessings.

Shyron E Shenko (author) from Texas on May 24, 2017:

Audrey, thank you for the comment. Chipper is a little smarty pants, he is learning to pick-up his toys by name and put them to bed, he has made friends with the squirrel who teases him. I will let you know when I need a sitter, but he is an absolute handful.

Blessings from me and Chipper.

Audrey Hunt from Pahrump NV on May 23, 2017:

Chipper is the cutest little guy ever! And he's also smart as a whip! He learned in a flash that all he had to do for a treat was to lift his little leg. Adorable! If you ever need a sitter...

Shyron E Shenko (author) from Texas on May 01, 2017:

Hello RoadMonkey, for the comment and compliment. Maybe your daughter's pup is younger than Chipper who is 4 months old. His funniest antic was the fight to the death, battle of the bug which made me laugh till I cried. We have two kinds of skunks one is black with white stripes and one is multicolored and it is called a pole-cat but I have not heard of any in Texas, but we have them in Alabama where I lived with my grandparents.

RoadMonkey on April 30, 2017:

What a lovely looking dog. My daughter has just got a new pup but I don't think he is as clever as Chipper. Chipper sounds like he is making you all laugh too. I certainly laughed at the antics. Glad we don't have skunks in this country!

Shyron E Shenko (author) from Texas on April 06, 2017:

Louise, thank you for the comment, I really appreciate you. Tell us about your Jack Russell in a hub. Many of us would love to see pictures of him.

Blessings my friend

Louise Powles from Norfolk, England on April 05, 2017:

Aww, Chipper is so cute. I love him. I'm sure you'll have many years of joy and happiness with him. I have a 13 year old Jack Russell, and love him to bits. x

Bill, thank you for the comment, and the wishes for the future. You are so welcome, this is my first pet that loves me the most, with the exception of Misha, but Misha was Hubby's companion.

Many blessings to you always

Larry, I thought I replied to you comment. Jack Russel dogs are smart also and they are also beautiful.

Thank you again for the comment.

Shyron E Shenko (author) from Texas on February 19, 2017:

Mike, thank you so much for reading about Chipper, I see him changing everyday. This little guy loves me, and how do I know that? If I sit in the floor he gives me all his pets, Puppy, Pepe Le Pew, Hector the hedgehog, the empty 1 liter bottle (his favorite) and Jerry the rat, Chipper lays them on my lap then he lays on my lap, and chews a rawhide strip.

Blessings always

Shyron E Shenko (author) from Texas on February 19, 2017:

Maria, I don't know what happened my reply to your comment posted before I finished.

John calls and Chipper answers to Chip/Chipper and Chipperino which I call him when we are playing outside.

Chipper sends his love

Blessings and hugs and love you my friend.

Mary Ann on February 18, 2017:

I adopted from Ann twice. We now have Zoe and she is 2 years old and a real love bug. Aussies are super intelligent as evidenced by the pee for a treat training. Our little girl does the same. Best wishes.

C E Clark from North Texas on February 17, 2017:

Sounds like you've embarked on an adventure and now you have a handful -- if you didn't already have enough to do. Seems like you got a smart dog, so now you can practice reasoning with it. ;)

Read this a couple of days ago and planned to comment yesterday and then I ran into someone at the library who just wouldn't stop talking. Yes, it really was that other person who wouldn't stop talking and not me! Got a good start on comments but never got to finish them yesterday, so today I'm finishing up with this batch I started on.

Nothing like a puppy to keep you on your toes. Hope all is well there. Blessings and hugs dear friend. Take care . . .

Shyron E Shenko (author) from Texas on February 15, 2017:

Flourish, thank you for the comment, I really appreciate you.

LOL, Chipper is going to have more brothers/sisters in June or shortly after. Not that I am pushing you to let your daughter have a dog, if you did it would be yours not hers, just like Chipper was suppose to be my husband's, but guess who feeds him and cleans up after him, loves on him and plays with him, just like all babies they become more attached to mommy. They are so much fun, but they are lots of work too.

Blessings to you dear friend.

Maria Jordan from Jeffersonville PA on February 15, 2017:

I am officially in love with Chipper too - he surely has the best parents in the world.

Enjoy every precious moment with your little guy. Hugs to you all, Maria

Ruby, Ruby my precious friend

I just read your goodbye Obama a real President

it makes me so sad that this slime follows him

Claiming he wants America great again

With Obama America is greater than it has ever been

And trump wants to bring our country to an end

I loved your goodbye to our President

And a poem just for you I have sent

Blessings and hugs my dear friend

Ruby Jean Richert from Southern Illinois on February 14, 2017:

I am sooooo jealous I could PEE! I want him. Ship him COD! It's a curse to be allergic to animals, which I am. At least I get to feed my birds and the neighbor's cat outside everyday. Chipper is adorable. Congratulations! ( You didn't read my good-bye to President Obama. ) Tell me what you think and leave me a poem, please....

mckbirdbks from Emerald Wells, Just off the crossroads,Texas on February 14, 2017:

Wow, what a precious little guy. Great addition to the family. I am sure you are repaid a million smiles for your efforts in discovery.

Shyron E Shenko (author) from Texas on February 14, 2017:

Thank you Larry for the comment. Maybe you need a play mate for your Jack Russel. I know that Chipper was the last of the last litter and Ann had not planned to have any more, but so many people at both the Phoenix and Love Field had such a fuss over him and took her phone number to inquire about one of his siblings she said she may breed the same pair that Chipper came from.

Larry Rankin from Oklahoma on February 14, 2017:

Just a beautiful dog. I'm partial to terriers. My Jack Russel is 12.

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on February 14, 2017:

Well Chipper is adorable for sure, and I wish many years of companionship for you two. Thanks for sharing the adventure with us dog lovers.

blessings always

FlourishAnyway from USA on February 14, 2017:

He is adorable. My daughter has always wanted a dog so I won't let her see this. You must love him to pieces!

Shyron E Shenko (author) from Texas on February 13, 2017:

Thank you John for the comment and the correction, I will take care of it right away.

Blessings my friend

Shyron E Shenko (author) from Texas on February 13, 2017:

P.S. Ann's dog will have another litter this year.

John Hansen from Gondwana Land on February 13, 2017:

Australian Terriers are wonderful dogs, Shyron. Friends of ours had one named Cossie and he was a very intelligent dog. Chipper sounds great but he had you pegged, giving him a treat every time he lifted his leg :) Oh the last two paragraphs of "The Arrival" are repeated in "Hubby's first sight of Chipper." This was a fun read.

Shyron E Shenko (author) from Texas on February 13, 2017:

Paula, thank you for the wonderful comment. Chipper is so smart and a bit of a con-artist. He is so funny, I had him chipped the following Monday and the vet was laughing so hard, when she chipped him, she offered him a treat and he turned his head and would not look at her, then when she said I am sorry, he took the treat.

I will give him a belly rub and tell him it is from my friend Paula.

I sure hope there is an Aussie on the Westminster Dog show tomorrow.

Blessings my friend.

Suzie from Carson City on February 13, 2017:

OMG Shyron....I'm squealing with delight. He's so precious, I want to reach into my screen and pick him up and hug him to pieces! Sounds like he's such a joy to have. You cannot help but LOVE a darling puppy like Chipper.

I laughed like crazy about the leg lift! How precious can he get? He thinks you're rewarding his trick with his leg....not that he's gone potty outside!!! OMG.....LMAO!! He must be a laugh a minute.

I'm so glad you shared this. I said I would probably never adopt again after my sweet old baby goes to doggy Heaven....but a tiny little pistol like your chipper would be so irresistible!! Give him a belly rub for me!

Hugs, Paula
