Pomeranian Labrador Mix - All About the Pom Lab Cross

I'm a lover of all things 'dog' (particularly the exploration of cross breeds - and just like to write about man's best friend.

Labrador

Labrador

For anyone looking to find a dog that is of a high standard, the Labrador is a natural choice.

They are the kind of dogs that you can find very easy to spend time around, but also the kind of animals that can be great companions.

If you want a loyal dog in life, the Labrador often wins the day.

However, the Pomeranian, or Pom, is often the kind of dog that people go for when they want something with a bit more craft and charisma – albeit often at the cost of their patience!

If you would like a Pom or a Lab, and cannot decide what you would rather, why not go for a ‘best of both worlds’ approach via the Pomeranian Labrador mix?

What is a Pom Lab?

As the name implies, a Pom Lab is a dog that is a half-way mix of the classic Pomeranian and the Labrador dog breeds.

These are two of the most popular breeds in the world, and for that reason, they tend to be a good choice for mixing breeds.

However, you would be hard-pressed to find two dogs with such disparate personalities.

As such, some worry that the Pomador mix might be a dog breed that can be tough to spend time around.

At the same time, though, you should spend a bit of time looking into their mood and mentality below.

This should give a better idea of – roughly – what kind of dog you might be happening to bring into the family home. Is it the right kind of dog for you?

Appearance, Look & Size

So, the first thing to notice about this mix is that they can have quite a unique size.

You see, both parents could not be any more different.

The Labrador is around 22-24” in size, while the Pom can be just 7-8” in size.

Even in weight, it is much the same deal: the Pom weighs just 8lbs, max, while a Lab can weigh as much as 79lbs!

That is why the weight and height of these dogs is more or less a total guess.

There is no definitive data to say that your mix will definitely be one size or the other.

What we tend to find, though, is that this is a dog mix that creates a kind of odd mix: either a smaller Lab or a larger Pom.

In terms of actual looks, this cross is a very interesting looking dog breed.

Not only is it very easy for you to keep an eye on, but it’s the kind of dog that you should have little to no problem getting to grip with and spending time with due to its distinctive look.

While you might have to get used to a dog that is very much going to be shedding all over the place, you will get a dog that is of a high physical standard.

That’s why we recommend that you take a closer look at this Pom Lab physically before you buy it.

Is this the size of the dog that you want?

Does it have the characteristics that you want?

Given they can have long and thick coats that shed all over the place, in various colours, you have to decide if you can put up with an adorable dog that is strictly high maintenance day-in, day-out?

How Will They Act?

The personality of a Pomeranian Lab mix is a very interesting discussion.

They are often the kind of dog that you could easily find quite had to spend too long around as they tend to be quite hard to get a handle on at first.

Teething pains and early troubles are common.

That is why you need to put aside their cuteness and just make it clear what you want and expect from your cross breed.

If they do not listen, you should consider getting someone to train it from a young age.

Given they have a Pom’s more rebellious and selfish attitude, though, you need to be ready for a dog that can test your patience.

Once you win their respect and love, though, this is a dog that will become lastingly loyal and ferociously caring of you and the family.

They are often very interested dogs in just about everything going on, so expect to find them sniffing around in just about any part of the house.

At the same time, expect to see them being dogs that want a lot of love and attention.

While this is common for most dogs, these mixes are a breed that craves that attention and that feeling of being involved.

If you cannot promise that you could get your dog that kind of love and care, you might not want to have a Pomeranian Labrador mix in your list of potential canines.

One thing to note about these canines is that they tend to be quite charming dogs and will often blend in well with kids and other dogs.

As ever, though, retain a close eye on how they act: if you notice any short-fused behavior, remove them from potential flashpoints as soon as possible: these aren’t dogs that hold back from a fight!

Exercising & Fitness

Exercise with these dogs is going to be quite a good thing to balance out.

One of the main reasons why these are so good for seniors is that they only have moderate sums of energy.

This means that they will not require a huge amount of exercise; regular exercise, yes, but nothing too strenuous.

Even going for a walk per day should be enough to keep a dog like a Pomeranian Lab mix nice and fit.

However, you should always look to make sure that you take them for at least one long walk every single week.

If you do that, you are much more likely to be left with a canine who has enjoyed the walking experience and thus will be tired at night.

If you want to have a dog that is going to be easy to spend time around, you need to find a means of tiring them and using up their energy.

Only by doing that can you make sure that you are left with a dog that is going to feel good to be around.

If you want to make sure you can form a good relationship with a Pom Lab cross, though, regular but easy exercise is the aim of the game.

Diet & Feeding

The diet is one of the hardest things to get right with a canine like these mixes.

That is why we recommend that you take a look at getting it on a raw food diet as soon as you can.

It might seem obvious, but dogs aren’t usually going to be eating tinned dog meat out in the wild!

That is why many people choose to keep their Pomeranian Lab mixes on a normal diet.

However, what we do recommend is that you take your dog to see a vet as soon as you can.

Why?

Because you will be able to find out about allergic reactions and other such issues that might plague and limit their quality of life.

Eating the wrong foods can be quite damaging to a dog, so making sure you take them to get a full dietary appraisal is essential.

At the same time, try to get more fish oils into their diet.

Just about every dog will benefit from this, as it helps to keep their joints fresh and fit.

For a pomador, this is more important than ever.

So, make sure you take the time to look at the dietary mixture that your dog gets, as well as make sure you can spend a bit more time finding supplements for glucosamine and fish oils; this will really help to keep your dog free from joint and bone issues in time.

Health Issues

Like all dogs, this mix breed has a chance to develop some worrying and problematic health issues that you should be concerned about.

If you want to get a healthy dog that you can look after, make sure you only get your puppies from trusted breeders who can give you verified checks that the canine is going to be free from the general problems that you will be dealing with.

Common problems include:

  • Hip and other joint dysplasia, leading to mobility issues later in life.
  • Eye and ear troubles, leading to issues including deafness and even blindness.
  • Weight gain issues, including an extensive build-up of fat around the torso.
  • Physical conditioning issues caused by a lack of exercise.
  • Heart problems caused or exasperated by their diet.

Such problems are common, and we recommend spending as much time as you can with a vet in the early days with these hybrid dogs.

While it might be expensive, making sure that such issues can be looked out for and dealt with accordingly is very important.

If you take the time to do this now, you will avoid regretting failing to do so later.

Other Cross Breeds to Consider

Of course, there are many other types of mixed breed dogs to consider out there as well. For instance, the Pug Lab Mix is an incredibly cute dog that takes on a lot of the similarities as the Pom Lab but has some slightly different quirks that actually might be more suited to your family and the way you work.
