I love sea horses. Sea horses are one of the many mysteries of the sea. Sea horses are a beautiful and graceful creature that includes 54 genres. In our land based world, the sea horse is celebrated but often we don't even notice the celebration presented right in front of us. What am I talking about? Swimming pool companies and water sports - the celebration of the sea horse goes beyond the traditional places and extends into our daily lives. For example, have you noticed the logo of Starbucks? It includes two sea horses.
Which brings me to the pairing of sea horses. Sea horses mate for life. The courtship is often a beautiful dance once the male is pregnant, it is said that she visits her male every morning. For you see, the sea horse lives a life I strive for - mating for life, visiting a loved one every morning and dancing in celebration of the love and admiration.
Sea horses are commonly found in Australia and Florida but colonies have been reported in the European waters of Thames Estuary, the river entrance to the North Sea.
From corporate logos to poems to all mediums of art - steel, glass and wood. The graceful lines of the sea horse are simply an inspiration for all forms of sculpture from driftwood to metal to glass to the ever popular and timeless murano art glass.
I admire the sea horse for more than exterior beauty, I also admire the sea horse for how they swim. For you see, it is the sea horse who doesn't "swim" but glides gracefully through the water. This horizontal structure is more human-like than the many colorful varieties of scaled fish of the sea.
Majestic Sea Horse
No one can contest that the sea horse is small but mighty. From the majestic shapes and colors, to the graceful movements to the life style that we as humans often strive for. The sea horse is one of the most spectacular miracles of the sea.
Interestingly, the sea horse will often (depending upon the species) change color when stressed - the very first mood ring! I never thought of a fish as being stressed but this creature reminds me that we are all stressed during certain points in our life even the majestic sea horse.
Genre and Species
Genre - originally from the French word "genre" meaning kind or sort, the term for any category.
Species (plural: species) is a word used in biology and "is one of the basic units of biological classification and a taxonomic rank. A species is often defined as a group of organisms capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring."
Seahorses Glide Not Swim
Seahorses glide in a diagonal position rather than a horizontal fashion.
Seahorses wear heavy armor and as such do not swim well. In our human body, all parts of our anatomy float with the exception of the head.
Mythology of the Sea Horse
In mythology, the only ones who were able to ride the sea horses were the sea gods.
Neptune is one of the most famous of all sea gods, he was the king of the water and the sea. Neptune was also known as the god of horses and the often seen as the patron of horse-riding.
One of the most common images of Neptune is Neptune riding a seahorse.

Types of Sea Horses
There are over 54 types or genre of sea horses. The size and color varies about the size is said never to exceed 6 inches. The life span sadly is only four years!
Sea Horses Pair for Life
Not to burst your romantic bubble but sea horses do not pair for life. They do look adorable in pairs. But here is some important research:
Monogamy is generally thought of something that occurs in higher animals, not fish*. Because of the findings, the paper hypothesized that pairing may endure over the winter, as it had been shown in a species of pipefish, a close relative of the seahorse. Because seahorses are the media darling of the fish world, journalists leapt at the chance to write about the little fish that falls in love. And to most people, monogamy usually means a single mate for life, so the faithful pair-bonding seahorse soon became the fish that mates for life and with and dies without a mate. The public ate it up.
While it is disappointing to the romantic in us all, it turns out to be great news for conservation efforts.
