Husky Pomeranian Mix Information - About the Pomsky

Husky Pomeranian mix puppies are probably the darn right cutest dogs around (remind me of a cute little wolf). They are of course a mixed breed of the Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian -- and for short are often referred to as a Pomsky (or Pomski, depending on how you want to spell it) or that of a Huskeranian -- as you can see either name is just a combination of the two breed names combined as is such with most 'designer dogs' (again, which is a term used to described purposefully bred cross breeds -- a combo of two existing & identified dog breeds).

What Exactly is a Pomsky (or Pomski)?

Pomsky puppies may come about through two main ways (depending on the breeder usually):

i) where the puppy has been given birth to by two Pomeranian Husky mixes already or ii) through inter-breeding a father Pomeranian half parent and mother Husky half parent (which is the usual manner & often preferred way of going about it). Therefore, the Pomsky will more often than not have a somewhat even blend of aspects & features from both its half parents, the Pomeranian and Husky (or in the case of the Pomsky parents, a mixture of the mix so to speak).

If you are going about finding Pomsky puppies for sale & then thinking of going on to actually buy one, this is definitely a question that I pose to them: exactly who were the parents of the pomsky -- two Pomskies or a Husky and Pomeranian (pure pedigree dogs) -- most reputable & trusted breeders will have told you already with the introduction of the puppies, before you ask any questions.

Husky Pomeranian Mix Puppies For Sale

Typically speaking they will cost around the $3000 mark, so certainly not cheap for a pomsky puppy (one of the more expensive designer breeds that's for sure). So as you can see pomskies aren't cheap, that's why you need to make sure you are dealing with a reputable breeder who has experience and knows exactly what they are doing (there are quite a few scams out there to be wary of) -- they should be breeding a male pomeranian with a female Husky (so as said above, get them to point out their parents and if they have any current or past health issues).

Generally speaking any breeder who is selling pomsky puppies for sale, should have a certification and reviews online (website, social media, listed) & a general presence (e.g. greenfield puppies are a stellar example of a company who have Husky Pomeranian puppies for sale -- where they have a BBB stamp of approved as an accredited business, reviews and they give all the information you could ever want).

About Mixed Breed Designer Dogs

Generally speaking, designer dogs, are actually a lot healthier than the traditional parent dogs, as they are mixing a wide range within the gene pool. That, doesn't mean to say you won't be visiting the vets any time soon they do still come with a few common health problems that we have specified below.

However, the predictability factor of a Husky pomeranian is obviously a lot more difficult than two of the same breed (e.g. Husky with Husky or Pomeranian with Pomeranian) -- where you would typically be able to get a fairly good estimate as to how big a pure bred dog will grow and what temperament & personality type it will have.

When you start to mix breeds, however such guesses, go out of the window pretty much as your designer dog will have picked up different characteristics & traits from its two parents, potentially creating a whole different personality altogether and no cross breed are ever the same. Hence, this following guide isn't meant to be taken as fact for Husky Pomeranian dogs only 'best' educated guesses that's based on past Pomsky mix puppies and their parental breeds.

What Do Pomsky Puppies Look Like?

As mentioned their appearance can vary from puppy to puppy. The most popular Pomsky have the typical Husky coat, however they can also have red, black, brown coats (due to the Pomeranian parent) with that a range of markings. Moreover, their eyes tend to be blue or a hazel shade (from the Husky) or green and brown (with the Pomeranian).

How Big Do Pomeranian Husky Puppies Grow?

Typically speaking the Pomeranian Husky mix will turn out to be typically a medium sized dog, ending up somewhere in the range between that of a small Pomeranian -- that gets to about 10 inches in height -- and a larger Husky -- at 21 inches. This factor obviously depends on the genetics of the two parents too, if they were particularly large or small relative to their breed as well. It also depends on the sex, a female pomsky will be smaller than a male.

They usually weight in at the 17 lbs mark, but you can literally add or take away 5 lbs or so, there is quite a wide range of variation with a Pomsky (more so than most designer breeds). You can even get what is referred to as teacup designer dogs too, where Pomskies have been specially bred to be tiny weighing just 2 lbs in some cases.

Pomsky Fur and Coat Information

Generally speaking a Pomsky puppies coat will be quite heavy, shiny & very soft (especially as puppies), derived mainly from the Husky (parent) who was bred specifically for a cold climate. So they won't have any problems with getting cold outside -- they actually might be over-thick to begin with, however dogs acclimatise, so their coat will eventually adapt to the temperatures around them. Just be sure to help them out a little by grooming them fairly regularly to be rid of dead fur, just a normal brush will do them nicely (however my friend's pomsky loves the Dyson groom tool, if you are interested in that sort of thing).

Husky Pomeranian Mix Temperament, Characteristics & Personality

Now this one is definitely a difficult one to call, because all dogs are different. That being said, they are usually very well behaved and get on great with men, women and kids as well as other dogs (as long as you make sure you socialize them from a young age though, otherwise you could end up running into problems when your Pomsky meets strangers).

If you start training your Pomsky as a puppy, they can be easily house trained and more than intelligent enough to be taught a few tricks if needs be -- that being said, in the obedience department they aren't all that great sometimes, they are what you refer to as a 'free spirit' kind of dog (but how else would you want them 'ey?). As Huskies and Pomeranians are rather loyal dogs, you will find Pomskies are too, very much a family type of dog. Energetic & happy to play, generally all round great dogs. One thing to note, that they do have an inherent 'hunting' characteristic about them, so don't be surprised if it starts going after rabbits and the like.

How Long & How Many Walks Do Husky Pomeranians Need?

There's no doubt about it, they are generally very energetic dogs and love to be walked & be out and about. Generally speaking I reckon they should be actively outside for no less than an hour a day, even then they should be playing & hanging around in the garden throughout the day. They aren't as high maintenance as some dogs, but they do need attention that's for sure. Pomskies are easy to teach games to as well, so children can take care of their exercise for the day in most cases (simple games of fetch and so on).

Pomsky Puppies Health

As said, these cross breeds in general tend to be very healthy dogs (more so than purebreds) -- and the same applies for Pomeranian Husky mix dogs. The only real issue is with one of their parents, the Pomeranian that sometimes run into dental issues that can run into their mixed offspring as well. To solve this just make sure you take your pomsky to the dentist regularly. Also, they come across a few eye issues now and again, so get those regularly checked out as well. With regards to a Pomsky lifespan, they should be looking at 13 to 16 years, so pretty lengthy really.

Are You Right for a Pomsky Puppy?

I believe Pomeranian Husky crosses are the ideal dogs for a family, where there is a lot of interaction with children and they are getting plenty of attention and exercise. They will give your children (and yourself) much loved company and will act as protective loyal guard dog too. However, if it is just yourself a Pomsky isn't going to be the right dog, because if you are at work & they are alone because they're energetic & social they are likely to become irritable and depressive with being left on their own.

If you are serious about buying a Husky Pomeranian mix, then make sure you have sufficient experience and knowledge of dogs to offer them proper care -- it is only fair to both you and the Pomsky puppy. Plus, when you come across a breeder make sure they are selling genuine pomsky puppies for sales, you will find a lot of mischeif goes on with designer dogs as they can fetch a fair price & they will sometimes pass off dogs as Pomskies when they could just be another cross breed of Husky or Pomeranian.
