Why Is It So Difficult to Select a Name for Your Pet Rat?

Deciding on the perfect name for the newest member of your fur family can be difficult for a lot of different reasons. For starters, you are going to be stuck calling them by this name for the next couple of years. And because of this, the smart decision is to take your time and select a name you know you will still love, or at least tolerate, in the future.

One of the reasons why it is so hard to pick a name for your pet rat is because they are constantly changing, and a name that suits them at one time may no longer suit them as they grow. Your 'little boy' can end up being the biggest in your mischief, and your 'Biter' might settle down into a calm, cuddle-loving sweetheart. By taking the time to get to know your rat for consistent behavior, you can prevent this heartache from taking place.

Another reason, possibly the strongest reason, it can be difficult to choose a name is that you love them. When someone cares about something, they tend to become overcritical with their decisions. Because of this, there is a strong chance you have already thought of the perfect name and just won't accept it. After all, no one is more critical of a piece of art than the creator themself.

What Makes a Good Rat Name?

Deciding on what makes a great name for your pet rat is something that needs to be done personally, as everyone has different tastes. Your opinion of what makes a good name will depend on many different factors, including your culture, religion, upbringing, age, and even mood.

Browsing lists of rat names online can give you a quick example of names, so you can get a sense of the types of names you like. You can then try to name your pet something similar. If you like a name at one time, chances are you will continue to like it. When it comes to rats, most people tend to like names that sound cute or mischievous.

1. Choosing a Name for Your Rat Based on Color

One of the best method for choosing a name for a pet rat is by basing it on the rat's fur color. Naming your rat in this way allows for your rat to be easily identified when amongst a group of rats and also shows that the name was selected personally for this rat. It would be extremely odd for you to find a black rat named White or a brown rat named Black. Naming your rat after the color of its fur is both easy and cute.

2. Choosing Rat Names Based on Personality

One of the most creative ways to pick rat names is by basing it on their personality. To do this, you are going to have to first spend some time with your pet, getting to know him/her a little better. You will begin to notice behaviors and characteristics unique to them; these mannerisms are the basic elements of your rat's personality. If your rat seems skittish, you can name it Scaredy Cat or Chicken. If your rat is aggressive, you can name it Beast or Taz. By choosing your rat's name in this fashion, you will prevent common overlaps that will be common in the other categories.

3. Name Your Rat After a Famous Rat

One of the fastest and easiest ways to select a name for your new pet rat is by naming it after a famous rat from a book or movie. If your rat is black, you could name it Templeton. And if your rat is brown, you could name it Splinter. And while choosing your rat's name in this way may lack originality, it does not affect the overall cuteness of the name in the least. No one will judge you for selecting a well-known name.

Examples of Famous Rat Names

  • Templeton
  • Ralph Stilton
  • Speedy Gonzales
  • Splinter
  • Remy
  • Pinky
  • Brain

4. Name Your Rat Based Off The Amount You Own

While it isn't completely unheard of to only have one rat, most people tend to purchase multiple rats at the same time. This ensures your new pet will always have someone to play with. It also provides you with a unique opportunity to select a clever and original name for your rats. If you have two rats, you can name them after a famous duo like 'Ren & Stimpy'. If you have three rats, you can name them after a famous trio like 'The Three Stooges'. You can even use this method if you only have a single rat by naming it something like 'Solo'.
