Emery Cat Scratching Board

Emery Cat Scratching Board

Emery Cat Scratching Board

I was thrilled to see the Emery Cat Scratching Board commercial a few months back. First, because I love As Seen on TV commercials, especially the dumb ones, and second because I really need one of these things.

Let me first start by saying that most scratching posts do not work, well, at least not for my two cats. And second, when my cats scratch me, I get really swollen from whatever is under their claws. I don't know how normal that it is but for me it's a real problem. Not to mention my torn up cloth and leather furniture getting trashed is no fun.

So the Emery Cat board was very intriguing to me because of it's price and it's promise to solve the problems my cats have created in my life. I have a few scratching posts and even a cool one which the cats are supposed to climb around on leave me alone, but they always want to be where I am and the scratching posts are not very attractive. I keep them in a back room and they're pretty much useless.

I thought that if the catnip infused emery cat scratcher appealed to my cats in any way, then it would be worth the price. I love as seen on TV stuff and I love to buy it so I can talk about how they don't work in my hubs but I had high hopes for my Emery Cat Reviews.

Let's watch the Emery Cat Commercial below and pick up afterward. Take special notice of the sound effects. They had me rolling on the floor the first few times I saw the commercial on TV.

Emery Cat Reviews

See what I mean about the commercial? I love it. (In that campy As Seen On TV kind of way)

So Emery cat looks pretty cool, right? Well, if it works I mean. I bought into the ad, hook, line and sinker. I wasn't sure if I could find Emery Cat in stores and where I live I don't get too many chances to see As Seen on TV stuff in stores anyway so the products I review I mostly buy online through offers. I'm not an affiliate marketer, just an avid hubber and As Seen On TV enthusiast. I link to good sites and occasionally some lucky affiliate because I always want to give my readers a chance to buy a product if they want to. The Emery Cat Scratcher is a product I liked because my cats liked it.

Here's how Emery Cat Works. First, if you have a cat, then you know they have a natural urge to scratch and stretch. They love digging those claws into anything they can find and it's usually at their owner's expense. Removing their claws is expensive and, to me, really cruel. It doesn't alleviate their desire to scratch, it just leaves them frustrated and defenseless. It also requires that they become indoor cats and I for one do not want to clean a litter box!

I want my cats to come and go as they please and just be cats. But, I don't want to get scratched because of the discomfort it causes me and I really don't want my furniture ruined. I really think Emery Cat is gonna be a huge smash hit because I can't be the only one who has this problem.

So the first thing my review will reveal is that I went with the up sell. I know, I know I'm a sucker but I think in this case I'm a smart sucker. In my offer I saw this the following:

For just another $10 you get the Deluxe Emery Cat Board, including a larger board, injection molded base, and a 5-year warranty.

Now as soon as I saw this, I went back to the Emery Cat Page to snoop around at the photos because I suspected I would see a small cat or kitten in the photos. You see, my cats are fat and I needed a big solid Emery Cat or it would just be a waste.

I decided to upgrade and I'm glad I did. My cats loved the Emery Cat scratcher because of the Cat Nip. Once that wore off, they were already used to scratching on it so the habit stuck. They never were interested in toy after the initial buzz wore off but they love the honeycomb design of the scratching surface. Perhaps it gives them a different type of resistance that those stupid carpeted scratching posts.

I want to point out in this review that besides being a scratching post of sorts, the Emery Cat is an actual emery board for cats. It uses their own scratching motion to file down their claws. I think it works well. I have tried to clip their claws in the past but I was always scared of hitting the quick and causing pain. I occasionally had their claws trimmed during vet visits but that was expensive and I don't visit the vet enough to keep the claws at a safe level. Once they grew back, the destruction returned so it never justified the expense. Once the furniture is destroyed, well, why bother.

If your cat or cats take to the Emery Cat scratching board, chances are they will leave your furniture alone or at least their claws will be dull enough not to destroy it. As far as curing my weird reactions to getting scratched, I would have to say it has helped a little. My cats still take swipes at me but they don't get their claws stuck in my flesh like they use to. I will get scratches still but not those nasty punctures.

The bottom line is that I have to give the Emery Cat a positive review and most reviews I've read online are positive regarding the usefulness of the product. I've seen some reviews that mention shipping problems and that time of thing but if you order from a reputable source you should be fine.

Emery Cat Board Consumer Reviews

It's been several months now since I first got my Emery Cat Board and I have one cat who loves it and one who does not. My feeling is that the one who doesn't like it is scared of the other who does. I have one cat who is clearly dominant over the other and he is territorial over this thing.

However, I read complaint after complaint about the product calling it the emery cat scam or whatever. People rarely take the time to post good things about products and I'm here to say that there are people out there who are loving this thing. I'm going to try and keep this hub updated with reviews if possible because as more and more people get the emery cat, more and more people will make videos of their cats on it. We'll have to see where things ultimately shake out. I've started by adding the Try it Before you Buy it piece from Channel 4 news.

As Seen On TV Commercials

One of my favorite things about the Emery Cat has always been that annoying meow in the commercial. Every time I see the ad I crack up when I hear the cat. I really gotta think that was the the inspiration for the even more annoying bark in the Bark Off commercial. It's my new favorite commercial even though I can barely sit through it. But, I think it deserves mention on this hub because of the way it carries on the emery cat tradition of cracking me up.  I'm also a fan of the Grill Glove commercial because anything having to do with fire makes for an interesting spot.

happy camper on May 09, 2011:

my parents cat really loves the emery cat board. It has never liked any other scratching post until this. I bought it for their cat and never used any catnip. I set their cat on it, gently squeezed its paws to make its claws come out, and drug its claws across it a few times just like it was scratching. That was about a month ago and so far the emery cat is all that it scratches on - instead of their furniture.

I am not saying that all cats love the emory cat board but I do know for sure that their cat loves it. Not all cats like the same things just like not all people do - but if your cat is one that does then it will be one of the best things that you ever bought for it.

If you find a store near you that sells them then I think that it is worth a try.

I bought one for my cats from Walmart

One used it one did not. the one that used it for 3 weeks then I took her to the Vet for something and ask them to check her nails to see how the scratch thing was working.

Well to my surprise they said her nails at the base were splintered and the nails were still sharp at the end,

So I would take my cat to the vet to check your cats nails .

Needless to say I took it back to walmart and told them it is not safe for cats.

I would not buy this product again

Sarah on February 20, 2011:

After I saw the emery cat on TV I was really interested in trying it. When I found it at Wal-mart, I bought one for my cats and two more for both of my sister's cats. Between the 3 of us we have 12 cats, ranging in age from 4 months old to 6 years old.

No matter what I did my cats wouldn't use it. I called my sisters and they were experiencing the same problem. It's been well over 6 months now and not 1 out of the 12 have shown any interest in it. The best part is, both of my sisters gave their emery cats away to friends and their friends cats won't use it!

My cats scratch everything, they are equal opportunity scratchers, but this they won't touch. Forget emery cat, they should make emery furniture. Then I won't have to worry about my cats scratching the couch ever again. :)

I have seen the emery cat in stores now. I'm not sure if people are buying it or not, but cat supplies are usually big business

Unfortunately I did not read reviews until after I ordered. You can't see pricing until after the order is set. I was overcharged on the initial product, $29.95 for one, overcharged on the shipping and charged shipping on the refill that I ordered (said free shipping). After waiting and waiting on the phone, I finally got through (within an hour of initial order). Told them I wanted to cancel and why. They tried to talk me out of it, offering discounts, etc. I firmly rejected as I was deceived in the beginning and was no longer interested. (Plus I found out that it's a pretty ineffective product.) I will keep a close eye on my credit card.

I bought the emery board through, my 2 cats are using it daily, and have left my furniture alone ever since, so I am loving this especially since I plan to buy a new furniture set next month. I would like to know where to buy a refill other than online, seems quite expensive online, although if anyone plans to order online, dont go through Amazon like I did, dont get me wrong I love Amazon, but I have found that if you go directly to the emeryboard website its much much cheaper, $24 for 3 refills and this includes tax and shipping.

It didn't work for my cat and would not recommend this product to anyone. Money down the drain!!

Suntydt on October 27, 2010:

I will start off saying from the reviews I read about the Emery Cat Board I wasn't sold but I wasn't totally turned off either. Most of the reviews were either the cats loved it and it did as advertised OR the cats didn't give it a second look and therefore was a waste of money.

The OTHER types of reviews I read about were concerning the company itself. Many people complained about being charged more than they originally thought it would cost them. Many times this was due to the fact that (like many other TV advertisements) they were charged shipping and handling twice when the second free Emery Board was requested. But on some occasions this wasn't the complain regarding the company.

There are MANY sites that offer areas to critique the Emery Cat Board. I recommend you read a few of them.

Here is my review.

I was going to order one of the Emery Cat Boards and give it to my sister as a gift. I considered this for my neice and my brother as well. So my thought was...I'll order one and get the second at the discounted price (just postage and handling). If it didn't work for one of the cats in question it could be given to one of the other relatives in question. I figured I had a 2 out of 3 chance for the product being used.

I went to the Emery Cat website and began the ordering process. I am on dial up so while pages were loading I was reading reviews regarding the Emery Cat Board.

When the webpage requested a quantity I put 2. One at regular price and one at the discounted price. The next webpage that loaded asked me if I would like the discounted Emery Board. Oops, I goofed. Go back one screen on Internet Explorer. Same screen loaded. Closed the browser and went back to the web page to start over. The page loaded back to the special offer page.

At this point I decided there would probably be a confirmation page and I could modify my order there. I selected that I did NOT want the doubled order. The page did nothing. I selected that I DID want the double order and a new page began to load. And load...and continued to load. After a half an hour I closed the browser tab and decided I would try again at a later date.

Within a few minutes I received an email notifying my order was processed and it would take 3 to 4 weeks for the delivery. It didn't say what the total was or what the name of the company would be for the charge.

This all took place at about 11pm so I decided I would call first thing in the morning. The email I received had their number and hours of operation.

Next day I called about an hour after their customer service time started. I told the man that answered that I had made the order the night before and I wanted to cancel. His reply was the order had already been shipped and couldn't be cancelled. But he COULD reduce the cost by $10 for my inconvenience. I told him to forget it.

I called my bank. There had been a hold placed on the amount for the order but I could reject the charge by going to the bank and signing a document saying the charge was not valid. I explained to my bank what had happened and about the phone call and they agreed it sounded like a scam. They agreed to stop it before it happened and recommended I change my debt card to a new card just in case the company in question tries something else at a later date.

Needless to say I agree. Since that time I have found out that there are other stores that carry this Emery Cat Board on the shelf: Some Walmarts, Walgreens, Rite Aids and another I can't think of right now. If this product is of interest to you then put in the leg work and call your local stores to see if they have it.

The one thing I read about in some of the reviews is that the insert that comes with the Emery Cat (don't know if this is the Catnip or the emery part) wears out in a short time and no one seems to carry replacements. Replacement have to be ordered online.

Hope this long winded report helps someone.

We got the Emery Cat for our 12 week old kitten. He has had it for a few days and isn't too interested in it other than the feather toy! My husband has tricked him to use it by using a laser pointer on the board. Our kitten tries to 'catch' the laser dot and files his claws in the process! His claws are dramatically different after a few laser sessions!

We have a problem similary to Karla Reidlinger's. We also wanted to buy one, get one we thought we needed to enter 2 in the quantity field. The website does let you see or confirm your order and charged my checking acct $71.70. We immediately called to correct the double order at 9:45 pm. We don't need 4 of these things. We were told to call back in the morning because it was not uploaded in the system yet. When we called back at 8:45 am the next morning, they told us it was too late because it was already shipped. Really? What a lie. All we wanted to do was change the quantity. Now I don't want any of them but will also be out the shipping when I return all 4. They can keep their customer service because it was very bad.

I ordered through the get one for 19.95 and the second was free. Shipping was advertised at 7.95 ea for a total of 35.85. However the summary came out as 86.70. I was not able to abort the order. I called 1-866-438-8842 and was told I needed to wait 24-hrs to cancel. I called back in less than 24-hrs and was told it had shipped. I can refuse the item but will be out 31.80 for shipping. What is the recourse???? Buyer beware.

Lucy & Ethel on October 01, 2010:

My cats refuse to use it. I have never seen them 'dislike' scratching a piece of furniture until they saw this one. Save your money!

Sabrina on September 23, 2010:

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT ONLINE!!! It is a complete and utter scam. I just bought this product last night and they ended up give me even more than I ordered. Then I called them as soon as their offices opened and they told me it had already been "shipped" I tell them how is that possible when you just opened a few minutes ago? And they just kept giving me excuses and telling me I couldn't change it or cancel the order.

Here is the way they trick you. The process goes like this; You click the order now button and then it tells you to fill out all of your credit card and billing information before you even get to see how much the order will be. Then they place up more advertisements and the finally send you to the page where they show you your order information. But by now the order is already placed and you can't change or cancel it. Then you find out that P&H isn't $7.95 total but $7.95 per item. So they charge you $15.90 for P&H. What's more than that, before you even get a chance to blink, they already take the money out of your account to ensure that you can't cancel or change your order.

Whatever you do don't by it off the internet. Just go to your local Walmart, Petco, or wherever else its sold and by it there. You'll save a lot more time and money there than going through this stupid scam. I've learned my lesson and I hope this helps others from being scammed by their fake advertisements.

It's the PRICE! What kind of scam is going on??!!! We were away because of a family emergency, and returned to find a credit card charge for $173.71 (not a typing mistake: one hundred seventy-three dollars and 71 cents). Then, insult to injury, a COD charge of $27.50 at the Post Office. There is no way I would have gone ahead with the order if the person on line had told me what the real cost would be for the boards and refills.

Isn't it illegal to post charges to a credit card without authorization?? It's too late to return the boards and refills, and to go after the company through a lawyer would be too expensive.

I'll phone the "Customer Service" number tomorrow. What kind of excuse could there be for this outrageous charge?

the emery cat board is not really any different than Bergan Turbo Scratcher Cat Toy. the only difference is the emery board has something on it. my cats claws are just as sharp as they have always been.

both of these products, the emery cat board and the bergan turbo scratcher cat toy make a total mess. i had already thrown out the cardboard to my bergan turbo scratcher cat toy because of the mess it made and the fact that cats like to chew on stuff and mine would chew on the ripped up cardboard that was constantly all over my carpet. same goes for the emery cat board. the mess it makes is constant and my cats chew up the pieces.

one of my cats currently has a piece of this crap stuck in his throat that i am trying to get out! i hate this product and any product like it because they are dangerous. i could almost swear that people who make cat products have never tested them on or owned a cat because almost every cat toy or product like this is dangerous to cats. cats are like children. you cannot have little pieces of junk coming from their items as they will chew on it.

I though well I'd have an extra one to use when the first one wore out. Only one problem, one of my cats will use it occasionally, and the other won't use it at all. Also, it doesn't seem to make any difference in the cat's claws, I still have to trim them. As I mentioned on another site, I had no problems with billing or shipping. However, Emery Cat is nothing but a honeycomb cardboard scratcher with sand, regulard SAND, glued on top, which falls off easily on the floor. If this were to work, which sand wouldn't work (I tried filing my own nails, didn't work) it would have to be inside the honeycomb where the cats grab, not on top where they stand with their paws. Developed properly with true emery-type material INSIDE the honeycomb, this would have been genious because my cats LOVE the $10 carboard product sold at Walmart. Returning the product nets you about $10 after deducting shipping both ways, so it's not even worth trying it out. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. Besides, my cats didn't like it. The feather toy was fun for them, but it falls off, and then they're bored. And I had enough brushes, so not bonus.

They rubbed agaist the board and sniffed at it, but so far not so good.

I have six indoor cats and was very anxious to use my new Emery Cat, as I go through scratching posts like there is no tomorrow! While all of my cats LOVE the carpeted scratching posts, and also the honeycomb cardboard scratchers, there is only ONE of them that will occasionally scratch on the Emery Cat. For me, it was a waste of money. When 5 out of 6 cats will do nothing more than take a bat at the attached toy, I feel your money would be better spent elsewhere!

Suzie on April 13, 2010:

I bought 2 at Wall Mart. I have 4 cats and they haven't used it yet they walk around it smell the catnip and my one cat likes to play with the feather and takes it out of the board carries around... I'm thinking of putting the catnip under the board to see if that will work..

Maggie on April 12, 2010:

My mother got one upon seeing the commercials, and got me one soon after (at wal-mart, btw) because we were talking and I told her I'd seen the commercial too and really wanted one. She got me mine despite the fact that her cats hadn't used hers yet, but we both thought it was a sure thing.

For all the positive comments I've seen here, I just wanted to let everyone considering buying one know that it's not a sure thing that your cats will ever use it at all, and then it's obviously a little useless. I have six cats (between my mother and I) and none of them have used it, ever. Six cats in two homes, so they're not influencing each other...

If anyone can tell me how to get my cats to use it I'd really appreciate it, as my little kitten has ruined my favourite shirt by scratching it since I got my emery cat :(

I'm not saying it doesn't work ever, but I'm saying they should include instructions of some sort because cats don't take to it naturally as they seem to imply in the ad.

I have had not problem getting my cat to use the the pad, and must say her nails feel edgey but no longer a neddle point as before. those that have found their cat doesn't take to the board, catnip is the key here, and lots of it as it says in the directions, trouble with that is two fold your cat has to love catnip to start with and if you use yard grown green plant the cats may need a little coaching to the dried plant leaves, fortunately my cat will kill for either. cats are what cat are, lay catnip in front of five cats, two may turn their little noses to the air an trout away. For those that are fortunate make sure that most of the catnip is settled deep into the the pours of the board, and have fun.

Now; my concern is the board, and the cat licking whatever the board has that makes it work, anyone with facts on that, it would be appreciated

I'm thinking about the Emery Cat even though I've heard mixed reviews because my cat drives me crazy with his scratching. The scratching post I have is worthless but I like the idea of a flatter surface for him. I haven't seen the emery cat in stores but if I come across one I might get it.

I just picked one up today (I found that BJs wholesale club has some in the cat food/litter aisle) and Mable LOVES it, even the little toy. That might wear off eventually but so far so good!

Does this product shred and make a mess like the cardboard scratch boxes you buy at Pet Smart? I hate that mess, although my cats love the scratchy box. I'm looking for something that doesn't shred.

I ordered not one but two emery cat. $53.00 charged to my credit card and three weeks later. The cat sniffed it and walked over to the couch and scratched it. I have put her on the emery cat board and tried to entice her into using it. She loves the cat nip that your pour on it . But leans right over it and scratches on the couch. With the cost of shipping there is no point in returning it. I gave the second one to my sister for her two cats and they also scratch the couch worse than before. Great idea if it actually worked

My cat won't use hers. I thought she would because it looks like the cardboard scratchers that she loves. But nope. Ate a bit of the catnip off of it and that was that. Maybe if I hide all the other scratchers? Maybe. I hope.

What's all the hub bub about. I got the emery cat and I think it works pretty well. I got it here and it was fine

But, if you're not comfortable ordering it on line, then wait til it hits stores. It probably wont be that long til it makes it into the retail world. It's really popular

My cats love the cardboard scratchers, however they walk around or over the Emery Cat, they will not use it and I have 4 heavy scratchers. It must be the smell, catlitter is rough and they don't mind scratching around in that so I do not believe it is the surface of the Emery Cat.

My opinion wait for it to come out in the stores, you may be able to return it...Emery Cat does not offer any kind of guarantee. At least you won't have to pay for the obsurd shipping costs.

I got a cardboard catnip infused scratching post for $4 at family dollar which came with small bag of cats loved it and went straight to work on it instead of my sofa.

Barbara - I still can't get my two normally playful and curious cats to use theirs. Just wondering - did you use any special technique to get your cats to use it or did they do it naturally. Thanks.

Where might I be able to purchase additional fillers or honeycomb inserts for the Emery Cat. My three cats thoroughly enjoy it.

I was intrigued by the commercials although I didn't like the idea of all the "extras" such as the upgrade to a sturdy base. But, it sounded like such a great idea since I cannot get my cats to hold still to get their nails trimmed so I have to take them to the vet at $19 each.

I ordered it online and by the time I got my final total there was no turning back and I ended up with extras I did not order and astronomical shipping charges. I was able to get them on the phone the next day with minimal wait time and the young lady did adjust my order although she wasn't particularly pleasant.

My order arrived in a timely manner but it still was not correct but it would have cost more to ship it back so I kept it all. The product seemed well-made and sturdy.

The big problem? My cats won't use it. They sniffed it and the catnip that came with it and walked on it and around it and then that was the end of that. I should note that my cats are both young and playful and there seemed to be no reason for them not to be interested in it. That was a week ago and I have yet to see any evidence that they even come near it.

That was my experience. I guess the moral of the story is that for the most part it is a great and novel idea in theory. But there is no guarantee your cat will use it. If anyone has any ideas as to how to make your cats use it I would be very grateful.

Thanks and I hope this helps.

I've been bombarded with comments on this hub regarding emery cat customer service and the lack there of. I don't have any orders in progress because I got mine long ago.

However, I do call the customer service number often just to see if I'll get through as so many claim they have not. I get through every time. I'm even surprised by the short hold times I often get.

So here is the Emery Cat Customer Service Phone number that I use successfully.

They should be able to answer any question you have regarding your order.
