Dog is a man's best friend

I am a wide reader, I can finish a 400-page novel in one to two sitting, about 2-3 hours only.

My dog

My dog

How our dog became our dog?

Way back May 23, 2017, after my seminar in a faraway province from our place. I attended an archiving seminar and workshop at Cagayan De Oro City, Misamis Oriental, Mindanao, Philippines.

Then, when I came back in May 20, two days after, Martial Law in Mindanao was implemented. Then, in May 22, my wife said, a breed of dog was about to release to somebody who wants to take care. And my wife was interested and informed it to me. And at exactly May 23, 2017, that dog became our own.

I do not what is the breed of this dog, we named him "EJ". To tell you honestly, we do not know where his name came from. We just named him immediately. My kids loved his name.

EJ or AJ

Actually there was a misconception, if it is EJ or AJ that time. Sometimes, we called him AJ, until finally, we set his name to EJ. We finally decided to EJ as his name, when a newly transferred neighbor arrived in our place, which her name is AJ. Sometimes, her husband made a joke to wife, the name of our dog. And of course, our neighbor AJ was sometimes mad to her husband. We corrected the name of our dog into EJ, and we informed to them that EJ is the name of our dog.

Then, few months had passed, while EJ is getting bigger, we are trying to teach him some dog tricks, however, he's not comfortable to us in learning dog tricks.

We waited for more weeks to teach him dog tricks, but still, he just barking. Then months was passing, and no tricks was taught to him.

EJ was barking to a chicken

EJ sense of responsibility

Until, months were passing and we have no time to teach anymore dog tricks, we just stopped to teach him different dog tricks.

Actually, one of the common reason, why we used to have a dog? Let's go back before May 2017. There was an instance, that a theft just attempted to go in the 2nd floor of our house to get some valuables. We have no dog that time. The theft was unsuccessful due to I opened the back door and I saw the theft was already in the window of the 2nd floor.

He just jumped on ran away. I tried to ran after the theft but I did not capture him. I informed the security personnel and other neighbors about the incident to alarm.

And that is history why EJ came into our life.

Every time, we left our house, EJ is not in his cage. Although, he has a chain to secure also the safety of our neighbors. We are also after with the safety of our neighbors specifically the kids playing within our area.

EJ is a good health to some attempted theft in our house as well as some attempted theft in our neighbors houses. When EJ saw some unidentified suspect, he keeps on barking until we will be notified for a possible theft. And he is right, there are some cases of attempts.

EJ has no formal training in security, however, that is already a natural instinct of a dog to bark to some unidentified individual coming on our house.

So, EJ already knew his responsibility. He knows when to bark, to jump, when to sleep and when to be awake. That is based on the observation of our neighbors. Our dog already knew how to handle responsibilities. Some of our neighbors also said about the training of EJ, and we just said, no training has been made to him.

We attempted to train him but he was uncooperative that time but as a theft identifier, he already knew what to do.

How old is EJ right now?

Based on the time that we just adopted him in May 22, 2017, he is already 30 months this coming November 22, 2019. Two and half years. Technically, he is already 30 months including his stay with his mother before we adopted him.

In view of this, I have no idea, how long he will be surviving. I heard some stories that a dog can live a maximum of 12 years. If that is true, how it feels in losing a dog like EJ? I do not know, if he can reach at the age 12. Some dogs only reach 3 years, if that will happen, I do not know, if we are ready to accept it. We are praying for his longer years to us, as he serve as our guardian angel in protecting us from people who wanted to hurt us.

My parents always had dogs and my husband and I have also had quite a few of them. All of them were treated like family members and lived inside with us. I hope that you enjoy EJ for many years to come.

Thanks for commenting Chris. Correct, if I got my understanding right? Do you have a Border Collie/Australian Shepherd Mix dog about a year and half ago? What happened to your dog? Is he still alive?

Chris Mills from Traverse City, MI on November 22, 2019:

Luis, I got a dog a year and a half ago. His name is Darby. He is a border collie/Australian shepherd mix. He has been a special friend and a protector. Thank you for sharing your experience with EJ.

Thanks for commenting Audrey. We continue calling him, EJ. Even if our former neighbor AJ is no longer our neighbor because we transferred to another place.

Audrey Hunt from Idyllwild Ca. on November 21, 2019:

Had you continued to call EJ, AJ, he would carry my initial for the name, Audrey June. But he is definitely an EJ. I love your story and I love all animals, especially dogs.

You have a lovely family. Thanks for this heart-warming narrative.

Being behave, we are easily trying to train him.

DreamerMeg from Northern Ireland on November 20, 2019:

Dogs can live anywhere between 8 and 17 years, depending on their breed. The biggest dogs usually live the shortest time. Your dog looks like he would be of a kind that could live maybe 14 years if it doesn't have any health problems. An untrained dog can be dangerous, even if it is friendly. Dogs love attention and to be played with. We had a dog when our children were young. My youngest child was 9 years old at that time and she played with the dog a lot, teaching her tricks, climbing on chairs, etc. The dog barked when a stranger came to the door but she could tell someone she knew even before the door opened and stopped barking then, so we always knew whether a stranger or a friend was at the door.

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on November 20, 2019:

Dogs always bark a lot when a stranger comes into the house. You could probably train him using little treats when he behaves. No dog wants to be on a chain unless he is being walked. My experience has been that dogs respond to affection, love and treats.
