The poodle is a water dog breed from non sporting group of dogs, also known as the Pudel in German and the Caniche in French. The poodle is a hypoallergenic dog that goes well along with children and other pets, and can adopt apartment living if getting regular walk and exercise. These qualities of Poodle make them one among the most demanded dog in the world, and they are ranked seventh top demanded dog breed in the USA.

The Poodle dog breed is classified in seven different varieties, according to their size, and the height of the Poodle is the most important for distinguishing the variety of the Poodle. The only three or four varieties of this breed are officially recognized by the major Kennels, other three unofficial varieties of Poodles are promoted by the breeders for marketing purpose.

1. Royal-sized or King Poodle

The Royal-sized Poodle, Royal Standard Poodle or King Poodle is not a recognized variant of poodles. This is an unofficial description used by breeders to market the largest sized standard poodles. These Poodles are taller and heavier than standard poodles, but the breed characteristics are as same like the standard poodles.

2. Standard Poodle

The standard poodle is a medium to large sized dog that has two different classifications set by the different kennels. The Top recognized kennels AKC and FCI have defined different standards for this dog.

    AKC standards: Over 15 Inch
    FCI standard: 18-24 Inch

  • Weight :

    AKC standards: 40-70 Pounds
    FCI standard: 44-74 Pounds

3. Medium Poodle

The Medium poodle is a medium sized dog that is recognized by the FCI and some other European kennels. But AKC and many other major kennels don't recognize them a separate variant of the Poodle.

4. Klein / Moyen Poodle or French Pudle

The Poodle varieties "Klein / Moyen Poodle or French Poodle", is an unofficial description that is not recognised by the Major kennels.

The Medium Poodles are known as Moyen Poodle in France. The moyen means "medium" in French.

The French Pudle is the popular name for small to medium size poodle in France.

The small sized poodle or known as Klein Poodle in Germany, that means small in German.

The Miniature poodle is a small size dog from the Toy group of dogs also known as Dwarf Poodle. This dog has two different classifications set by the different kennels. The kennels, AKC and FCI have defined different standards for this dog.

6. Toy Poodle

The Toy poodle is a small size dog from the toy group of dogs that is recognized by the FCI and accepted as a separate variant of the Poodle. The many major kennels like AKC and BKC, doesn't recognize them as a separate type of Poodle dog breed.

7. Teacup or Micro Poodle

The Teacup Poodle also known as Micro-poodle or Pocket poodle, is not a recognized variant of poodles. This is an unofficial description used by breeders to market the smallest poodles. These dogs are developed by the selective breeding that have health problems. They are prone to heart defects, collapsing trachea, respiratory problems, digestive problems, and blindness.
