Feeding Your Dog

Next to keeping your dog current on shots and dental care, feeding is a very important part of the total overall care process. With so much controversy about everything else in the world of pet care, it is nice to know that there are products out there that make pet food relatively easy to choose.

A raw food diet is considered the ideal diet by some breeders and pet owners. Feeding this type of diet is more time consuming as you have to chop and grate the vegetables and mix it all together with raw meat, and different supplements. This is something that you should research and consult with your vet about before starting. I have seen many testimonials as to the benefits that this kind of diet provides.

My Choice of Commercial Foods

If you do not have time to feed a raw food diet, there are premium foods with high-quality ingredients on the market. I was advised by my Vet to feed a premium food. One of the products that he recommends was Innova, which I started with, but since the recall, I have switched to Nutri Source. In January of 2003, a long-time dog food manufacturing company from Perham Minnesota developed and launched the Nutri Source products.

The History of Tuffy's

Tuffy's was originally established by Darrell "Tuffy" Nelson in 1947 as a manufacturer of livestock and poultry food. In 1965 they developed dog and cat food. The food was named Tuffy's, and the original Tuffy's brand that we fed our dog growing up is still available. The company changed hands a couple of times until 2001 when the current owner Doanae Pet Products decided to close the pet food plant. It was then purchased by Kenny Nelson, the son of the original founder.

I found a site called Dog Food Reviews where Nutri Source was given a four out of five-star rating, Innova also received a four-star rating.

The History of Trader Joe's

Trader Joe's has been around since 1967. They started in California, and are starting to branch out. I discovered a local store and went in to look around. I was surprised to find the Trader Joe's brand of dog food. I was further surprised when I read the label and found that the ingredients meet my standards. The founder also changed the way that they do business by buying directly from the supplier, and not charging them shelf fees. All stores charge these fees to suppliers to have their product on the stores' shelves so the prices are quite a bit lower at Trader Joe's than your typical pet food store or supermarket.

Healthy ingredients and Foods Not Good for Dogs

Reading the label is the most important thing for a pet owner to do. I have come across a web site called "The Dog Food Advisor," which I feel is an excellent site. It has plenty of information, including how to read the label. The editor of this community is Mike Sagaman, and he has a lot of useful information on the site.

The premium foods start with fresh quality meats and vegetables. They do not contain animal by-products, which can include: the remains of a slaughtered animal after the edible parts are removed, animals that come in dead or diseased, pets that have been euthanized in vet clinics, and roadkill.

Corn is one of the many human foods put in dog food that is toxic to them. There are also chemicals and preservatives such as Butylated Hydroxyanisole, Butylated Hydroxytoluene, Ethoxyquin, and propylene that are not good for our pets. Also food dyes like Blue 2 Red 40, yellow 5 and 6, and caramel color are not good for them.

Also, the FDA does not object to putting human food adulterated with rodent, roach, or bird excreta in animal feed. If you want more information about these facts by Dr. Patrick Mahaney, you can read his article "Pet Food: The Good, the Bad, and the Healthy."

Most fruits and vegetables are good for our pets. The "ASPCA" website lists the following as not good for dogs.

  • Corn
  • Avocado
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Grapes
  • Raisins
  • Persimmons
  • Peaches
  • Plums

There are breed-specific foods, foods for hunting dogs, grain-free, and weight-control foods. There are a lot of things to consider when choosing the right food for your dog. Your breeder will have recommendations, so consider these when you do the research to find the right brand for you.

The Advantages of Feeding Your Dog Premium Food

To sum everything up feeding a premium dog food gives your dog the strength and energy to do what they were bred to do, and also feeding the right serving size, will keep your dog at the right weight. This is important as they get some of the same issues as overweight people, such as diabetes and heart issues.

So as I have mentioned being a responsible pet owner includes doing your homework, and finding that brand of premium food that is best for your dog.
