Caravan Hounds, also known as Karavan Hound or Karwanis is a medium sized, hound breed dog from India. It is considered to be the fastest running dog of India, which is a slender and sturdy dog. Many people also believe that it was developed from the Arabian Saluki dogs brought in the Mughal period.

Caravan Hound is an exceptionally loyal dog, capable of providing an excellent performance in the field on a consistent basis under gruelling conditions that would decimate most other dogs. Its physical strength couples with great speed and plenty of stamina to allow- it to catch and kill several types of game, from hare to blackbuck, over rough country. This intelligent and keen hunter dog is reserved with strangers and do not like to be touched by strangers.

  • Caravan Hound dog is the fastest running dog in India that can reach up to 42 mph when running whereas a leopard can reach up to 50 mph.
  • Caravan Hounds are tall dogs, which have long, hare-like feet and have a cat-like balance.
  • Caravan Hound dogs are adept at chasing and catching their prey, even in adverse geographical conditions, they can leap up to 21 feet horizontally, whereas leopards leap over 25 feet horizontally.
  • They are quite reserved, and bark only when needed. They are not aggressive in nature, but, do not make friends with strangers quickly.
  • Caravan Hound dogs are very friendly and devoted to their owners and family, but are less trusting with other pets, mainly birds.

Caravan Hounds are medium to large sized, skinny and slender dogs that can be tall around 24 to 30 inches at the withers. They are true hunters, were developed for catching hares and are even capable of bringing down Blackbuck. Caravan Hounds are capable of providing an excellent performance in the field on a consistent basis under gruelling conditions that would decimate most other dogs.

The Origin and Breed History

The history of Caravan Hound dog breed, dates back to the time of the Mughal period in India. These were developed by people of a Vanjara tribe, who keep moving from place to place with their family, herd groups of sheep and goats and lived in makeshift tents. These groups of people were called "caravan", from which these dogs got their name "Caravan Hounds". Most of the people believe that when Pathans, Afghans, Arabs and Persians came to India during the Mughal period, they brought Arabian Saluki and Tazi breed dogs with them And the Caravan Hound is a descendant of those dogs.
