Bhotia dogs are medium to large sized dogs from the Himalayan region of India, which people also consider as mastiff dogs due to their large size and strong body. They are mainly found in the Uttarakhand state of India. They were developed by Bhotia nomads of Uttrahand, and also known as Bhotia Mastiff, Himalayan sheepdog and Pahadi Kutta. Bhotia dogs look very similar to Tibetan mastiffs, but are slightly smaller in size and have less hair on their faces than Tibetan mastiffs. Bhotia dogs have been highly appreciated for protecting live stock and their family from wild predators in the inaccessible valleys and snowy mountains of the Himalayas.

In the year 2005, The government of India issued a postage stamp with picture of Bhotia dogs to respect and promote them.

Are Bhotia and Tibetan Mastiff dogs of the same breed

The physical traits and characteristics of the Bhotia dog is very similar to the Tibetan Mastiff dogs, but Bhotia dogs are slightly less hairy and smaller than the Tibetan Mastiff dogs. The geographic location of the origin of both breeds of dogs is also almost the same, one is found in the eastern region of the Himalayas and the other in the western region and most people believe that both are the same dogs. But many people believe that the Bhotia and Tibetan Mastiffs are two different breeds of dogs.

  • Bhotia dog look very similar to the Tibetan mastiff, but the Tibetan mastiff dogs are bigger in size and have more fur on face and ears.
  • Bhotia dogs are either another blood line of the Tibetan Mastiff or both are two different types of the same breed.
  • Their owners often wear a prickly iron collar around the neck of these dogs, so that wild predatory animals such as leopards do not attack their necks.
  • Bhotia dogs are native to Uttarakhand in India, which are free roaming dogs and due to interbreeding with other breeds of dogs, pure Bhotia dogs breed dogs are rarely available.
  • Many people of their native place believe that both Gaddi and Bhotia both, are two different varieties of the same breed.

Appearance And Physical Traits

Bhotia dog is a large sized dog ​with double coated, thick and long fur that help them to survive in the cold mountains of the Himalayas. They are strong dogs with broad chests, strong bones and muzzle. Whose paws are padded and covered with hairs that help them to hold on to slippery and snowy mountains.

Personality and Temperament

Bhotia dog is a strong, courageous and naturally healthy dog, which are hairy dogs, that are well suited to living in the cold mountains of Himalaya, that is not recommended to kept in warm climate. Bhotia dogs are developed to work as shepherd dogs and they have lived like free roaming dogs for many generations, that need a lot of running and daily exercise and not suitable for apartment living.


  • Bhotia dog is an alert, active and devoted dog that make an excellent family pet and watch dog.
  • It's a courageous, determined and protective of family.
  • Bhotia dog look frightening and aggressive, but they very friendly and gentle dogs that get well along with children and other pets.
  • But they are groomed as watch dog too, and sometime can be aloof to strangers if not trained or socialized at early age.
  • Bhotia dogs are an excellent dog that is available freely in India.

The Origin and Breed History

Bhotia dog is an Himalayan mountain dog that is found in the cold mountains and valleys of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand, Himachal and Jammu state of India. The history of their origin is not available. But they look like Tibetan mastiff dogs and are considered to be their descendants.

According to another belief, all the dogs of the Himalayan region such as Gaddi, Bakharwal and Bhotia of India, and Bhote Kukur of Nepal, and Tibetan Mastiffs of Tibet, all are descendants of an extinct Himalayan dog.
