Top American Bulldog Training Tips

The American Bulldog has been characterized by its loyal nature, powerful stance and intelligent behavior. Effective training and socialization at a young age are crucial in order to maintain a healthy, happy and well behaved pet. The following guide will provide American Bulldog training tips.

This breed is renowned for their instinctual guarding ability which is the reason it is considered extremely protective. Due to the strong temperament and health requirements of these dogs, it is important to socialize with other canines and practice a fair amount of exercise. This means exposing pups at the youngest age possible to a range of different environments, animals and people.

This will assist in the prevention of the development of increased aggression as they become older and more powerful. Due to their instinct to herd, it is crucial to socialize with smaller animals to avoid this behavior from occurring in the future. Ultimately, confirming your presence as the pack leader from the start will assist in gaining control over behavior.

These breeds have a tendency to be dominant and aggressive if not properly trained. Engage in consistent methods through reinforcement of desirable behavior and maintain firm tones for effective discipline. Crate training is often recommended in providing a secure and comfortable spot for your pet which is also an option for house training.

A result of the immense size and strength that these animals can grow to means pets should be leash trained from a young age. This includes keeping the pup on a shorter leash in order to learn to remain alongside the owner during walks. Methods will further assist in the prevention of pulling when the dog is fully grown and includes stopping or changing direction while walking a misbehaved energetic pup to curb the undesirable behavior.

Basic obedience such as sit, stay and heel is essential to have a well behaved pet and involves reinforcing the desired behavior with treats or canine snacks each time it is performed. Due to their highly intelligent nature basic obedience will assist in nurturing desired behavior. Remember to keep sessions brief so it remains stimulating and fun for your pet.

A result of their need to socialize means that these dogs should always be provided with stimulation, exercise as well as social interaction with other friendly canines. American Bulldog training tips includes reinforcement of desired behavior, learning how to walk on a leash and effective socialization. Be sure to engage in such strategies for the health and happiness of your pet.

This is great. I had no clue how to start raising my american bulldog but your tips are very helpful. I found some interesting videos in http://www.hameaudesbulls.com/en/ which seems to be a well known American Bulldog breeder.

Ha Ha! Bull dog gass! That's funny Larry Fields! I haven't heard anything bad about American Bulldogs. They are sought after great dogs where I come from.

Larry Fields from Northern California on February 05, 2012:

American Bulldogs have a reputation for being calm indoors, and for having relatively low exercise requirements. That can be a big advantage for people who like big dogs, but aren't able to take them out for long walks.

Speaking of long walks, I remember a Northern Sierra day-hike from several years ago. The driver brought along his American Bulldog mix. I've never met a gassier dog. I wish that I'd brought a gas mask for the car ride. Did the bloke feed him lentils for breakfast?

That said, I've seen seen a two-sentence hub before. Although the topic is interesting, there's not enough 'meat' for a thumbs up, thumbs down, or rating of any kind. Perhaps it would have been more appropriate to put this in the forums.
