Dogs have lived with human beings for thousands of years. Their loyalty, keen sense of smell and keen sense of hearing have made them excellent guards. Many dogs have sacrificed their lives while protecting their owner.

Here is a brief overview of the top guard dogs.

Bullmastiff

These large domestic dogs were used in the 19th century to guard estates. They have a solid build and a short muzzle. These dogs are quiet. They can weigh up to 120 pounds (54 kg) and can grow up to 27 inches (69 cm) tall. It is a treat to see them walking.

The median lifespan of these dogs is eight years. They grow till they are around three and a half years. These dogs are prone to hereditary diseases like entropion, bloat and arthritis.

These dogs share the characteristics of Molosser dogs. The breed’s bloodlines are drawn from English bulldog and English mastiff. Their color may be fawn, red or brindle. Their lifespan is around 8 years.

German shepherd

These large-sized dogs are a treat to watch. They originated in Germany. They were originally used for herding and guarding sheep, hence the name. They are well-known for their intelligence and strength.

These dogs are employed in police and military as they are obedient and easy to train. These dogs are immensely popular as guard dogs all over the world. They can weight up to 88 pounds (40 kg) and can grow up to 26 inches (65 cm).

German shepherd is an intelligent dog. In the book, “The Intelligence of Dogs”, author Stanley Coren ranked the breed third for intelligence. He found that they had the ability to learn simple tasks after only five repetitions and obeyed the first command given 95 percent of the time. German shepherd puppies are cute and adorable. Also it is a treat to watch a full grown German shepherd walking gracefully.

Doberman pinscher

These dogs are among the most common of pet breeds and are well-known for their alertness, intelligence, endurance and loyalty. They are energetic and lively dogs with a square build and short coat.

These dogs can weigh up to 90 pounds (45 kg) and grow up to 28 inches (71 cm). They are compactly built, athletic and swift. These dogs are often stereotyped as aggressive and ferocious. They make excellent guard dogs because they are fearless and are willing to defend their owner.

Doberman pinschers’ tail is fairly long. They have a short tail due to docking. Docking is a procedure in which most of the tail is surgically removed shortly after birth. This is to ensure that their tail does not obstruct their work.

Rottweiler

This medium to large size domestic dog is used as a guard dog, search and rescue dog, guide dog for the blind, police dog, etc. This multi-faceted herding and stock protection dog is capable of working under many conditions. It is a good natured, placid, devoted and obedient dog.

Rottweiler is will known for its strength and willingness to work. An average male Rottweiler stands at 61 to 69 cm (24 to 27 inches), and weighs around 50 to 60 kg (110 to 132 pounds). An average female Rottweiler stands at 56 to 63 cm (22 to 25 inches) and weighs around 35 to 48 kg (77 to 105 pounds).

American pit bull terrier

Also known as APBT, this medium sized dog has short hair and a powerful physique. Its coat is glossy, smooth, and slightly stiff. This solidly built dog is a member of the molosser breed group. It has a well-defined muscle structure. It can be of any color.

American pit bull terrier is well-known for its speed, gameness, agility, strength and athleticism. These dogs are confident and have a zest for life. They are eager to please their owner and are excellent family companions. They can make good guard dogs if they are trained; as otherwise they can become friendly even with strangers.

An average male American pit bull terrier weighs between 35 to 60 pounds and is 18 to 21 inches. An average female American pit bull terrier weighs between 30 and 50 pounds and grows up to 20 inches.

Cane Corso

Also known as Italian Mastiff, this excellent guard dog is a peerless protector. It is not known to be a noisy breed. Puppies are relatively easy to train because they are eager to please you.

Males stand 25 to 27.5 inches at the withers; females 23.5 to 26 inches. Weight is proportionate to height and typically ranges from 90 to 120 pounds.

These huge Italian pooches are extremely focused on their individual turfs. If you are looking for an effective guard dog, a Cane Corso is definitely one breed to consider.

Rhodesian Ridgeback

Rhodesian ridgeback is a strong, muscular, balanced and athletic dog. These dogs are capable of great endurance with a fair amount of speed.

Males range in height from 25 to 27 inches (38 kg) and females from 24 to 26 inches (32 kg). Known for an even, dignified temperament, they are devoted and affectionate to their masters and reserved with strangers.

If you are looking for a guard dog you may choose any of the above-mentioned breeds. It is advisable to choose that puppy that walks up to you when you visit the pet store.

You left out the top guard dog which is a Cane Corso. I have had bullmastiff American Bulldogs Boxers a lot of the Mastiff breeds and by far the Cane Corso ranked number one with my experience in large breed Guardian dogs
