Cats Are Cool

I remember always having cats around our house as a child. They were either dropped off at the house, or we found them wandering the streets or they found us wondering the streets. We had dogs also but I have to confess my preference for the kitties. I can think of at least, ten reasons why they are better than dogs. Are you a cat person?

1. Cats are better pets because they are very independent. No, they don’t need to be entertained to stick around. They just exist and will allow you to pet them if it pleases them. They don’t get in the way or trip you. Cats are small enough to stay out of the way.

2. They are better is because they are literally maintenance –free. That is, if you get them young and train them, they will take care of themselves. You don’t give cats a bath, or trim their hair. Sometimes they need their claws trimmed, to keep them from clawing the furniture, though.

3. Kitties are very cool; way cooler than pups. They usually have some dignity and don’t slobber all over you. No long drool hanging from their mouths like you see on dogs! Yuck!

4. cats make the best pet is the fact that they can find their own food. Anything that moves, from crickets, frogs, snakes, birds, and mice! Which brings me to state another good reason to have one

5. they kill mice ! It's fun watching them stalk their prey. Slowly watching and approaching them, like their cousins the lion stalking a gazelle. The only thing I don't like about the cat stalking their prey is that they will bring it to you as a present.

Cats are entertaining video

6. They would rather drink out of a rain puddle than from that nice new kitty – decorated water dish that you paid $19.99 for!

7. As far as the seventh reason for owning a cat , is due to their ability to entertain when it suits them! I’ve had some make absolute fools of themselves, especially when one would climb into a bag, only to have another one pounce on it! The look on his face was priceless!

8. The eighth reason they are better than dogs is the fact they don’t need or want to be walked. Have you ever tried to walk one? Even with all of my experience with them, I could never get them to cooperate with a harness and leash. It’s that independence thing, you know... I usually wound up dragging them.

No, I won't walk them; they can go outside in your neighbor’s flowerbeds, thank you. Just don’t let your neighbor see them.

9. Yet another reason why cats are better pets is because they DO NOT bark ! Oh, I am so grateful for this one. They may meow when hungry or when they hear another cat outside, but they never bark! There’s nothing worse than a loud, incessantly barking dog!

10. And the tenth and final reason why cats are better pets is due to the fact that they can use a litter box and not have to go outside. This fact allows the owner to be away for a few days and leave a litter box, with some dry food and they can take care of themselves.

Summary of why cats are better than dogs

Did you agree with my reasons to own a cat? if yes, then you may be a cat person too!

So these are my ten main reasons I can think to own a cat instead of a dog. I have nothing against dogs but I definitely prefer cats.

I hope I haven't offended any dog owners. I love all animals and have owned dogs as well. This was all done tongue-in-cheek.

Don’t forget to go the nearest animal shelter to adopt a rescue cat or dog. Don’t buy them if you can help it. Buying an animal at a pet shop encourages over breeding in poor conditions without oversight from animal organizations. There are so many strays out there, and they all need a good home!

I have some links to animal shelters below, so please check those out more.

I also love all animals but cats are more self reliant...if only dogs would use a litterbox...

Lynn Savitzky from New Jersey on March 25, 2015:

I love dogs, but points 1 and 8 are why I prefer cats. Dogs need so much attention and not everyone wants to wake up at 6am to walk them. Especially in the winter.

Thank you for your comments. I have grown up with both dogs and cats but my personality better matches a cats.

I grew up with dogs and cats. My husband and I have had more dogs over the years but currently have 1 dog and 2 inside cats. They all have their sweet ways about them. :) Up votes and pinning.

Stacie L (author) on June 11, 2012:

Melissa A Smith: yes, I think cats are maintenance free, except when they stay indoors and need frequent litter box changes. Don't forget that dogs kill wildlife as well. Cats kill rodents for their owners. Thanks for commenting.

Melissa A Smith from New York on June 11, 2012:

Cats 'could' be maintenance free, but if I were a cat owner, I wouldn't elect to let them outside to kill wildlife.

Thanks for this hub. I chuckled few times while reading :)

@jennyreeve: thank you for stopping by my cats are better pets hub. Yes,cats are a lot easier to have as pets. They provide lots of love;differently from dogs.My last cat lived 23 years and was a great companion.

jennyreeve on March 21, 2012:

I quite agree here. I adore cats. they are so easy to look after, all they need is love and they give it back just by being there. :-)

Hahaha it's true! cats bring home their trophy/catch for the day and sad to say they are usually dead mice. I just got a valentine's gift from my cat yesterday morning, a very dead mutilated mice placed near the door to my bedroom.

@GinaCPocan: thank you for reading my hub. I said cats don't trip or get in the way...I was thinking about the way dogs do. I had dogs that always tripped me and jumped all over me. Cats that trip their owners will usually do so when they are hungry. Maybe your kitty is a lttle mischievous?.LOL

GinaCPocan from Chicago on October 09, 2011:

Hi Stacie, I'm impressed. Your 2 year old Hub is still getting attention. Nice. But anyway, I'm a cat and dog person. I do however lean towards cats then dogs, but I still love dogs also. They're all the closest things to heaven I can think of, cause they are truly sinless and innocent.

Anyway, I want to rebuttal that comment in the first reason. About that tripping thing? You should meet my cats, lol I have one that will do it deliberately. I think he thinks it would be funny to see me drop whatever it is in my hands. This cat thinks and you can actually see him working things out in his head, lol.

Now ya got me wanting to write about them, :P

Good Hub Stacie

Thanks for your comments and suggestions sally's Trove.

i actually wrote an article on the pros and cons of cats and dogs on the link above about adopting rescued cats and dogs on wizzley.

I grew up with both cats and dogs and love all animals but cats seem to suit my personality more.;-)

Sherri from Southeastern Pennsylvania on September 18, 2011:

I happen to be a long-time cat lover who just recently learned to love a dog or two. I read your Hub with interest and with a smile on my face.

Perhaps a follow-up Hub could be why some are cat people and some are dog people...Although I now find a very special place in my heart for dogs, I'd only want a dog that found its own food, pottied in a pan indoors, amused itself, didn't need to be walked, didn't bark, and of course, purred. :) Up and funny.

Stacie L (author) on September 18, 2011:

@Ddraigooch: that's an interesting analysis.I've had cats that attacked people to protect me..they can be trained but it takes patience.

They do no play catch but provide a quiet companion which is what many like about them.

Dogs are fun and are probably more adapted to active people..

Emma from UK on September 18, 2011:

I loved reading this hub, but I never agree that people are either cat or dog lovers. You can be both. I love cats because they have a more grown up and educated air about them. But what you see as a cat liking you, is really a cat using its primitive instinct the way a dog does. Both only give you affection to get food.

I love dogs because you have to devote time to them. What is the point of having a pet if you don't feed, groom or care for it?

A dog will also look after its family. A cat would not attack an intruder unless it tried to stroke it.

Ambray on July 31, 2011:

Hey there Stacie,

I totally agree with you. I love my kitten to bits, she never would hurt a fly! My kitty always cuddles me, so I named her Cuddles. My friend LOVES dogs and has a DISGUISTING, SLOBBERING, UGLY, YUCKY DOG. He bites me almost every day. I hate dogs a lot... Sorry if I'm being harsh lol, anyway, you and cats rock!

Stacie L (author) on July 27, 2011:

@Fionabaron; thank you for taking the item to read and comment. I love cats and cat people ;-)

FionaBaron on July 27, 2011:

You're absolutely right Stacie. We have 5 cats...and yes that's a bit much...although we never planned to have that many as they all adopted us. I completely agree with all of your 10 reasons....I think my favorite is definitely #1 because they truly are independent:) Thanks for the fun post :)

I've had cats most of my life and love them also! ;-)

voted up and awesome! i'll have to agree with you on this one...most especially because they are easier to take care of and you can leave them for a few days and they'll take care of themselves. :)

Pro Pet First Aid from Essex UK on May 01, 2011:

Some good points about Cats. Being a dog lover i am a bit pro dog but a cat will often stand up to even the biggest dog and stop it in its track.

Thanks seanorjohn: cats are so misunderstood...

dogs may be fun and obedient but as they say "dogs drool and cats rule!" LOL

seanorjohn on October 26, 2010:

I gave in to my children's request for a pet and that's why we now have two cats. I used to look after a friends collie whenever he went away and I always considered myself indifferent to cats. I admired their independence but never believed I could love a cat. How wrong I was.

Stacie L (author) on August 28, 2010:

thanks Pcunix; cat people are cool!

Tony Lawrence from SE MA on August 28, 2010:

There are dog people and cat people. I like cat people.

Stacie L (author) on November 14, 2009:

hey Mike Lickteig;

thank you for posting your comments about cats being better pets than dogs.

it was a little tongue in cheek fun article.I love all animals but cats are my fav.

They are graceful and elegant, and sometimes they can be goofy and fun!

Mike Lickteig from Lawrence KS USA on November 14, 2009:

I much prefer cats to dogs. Cats have a grace and dignity and elegance that most dogs will never approach. Now, some dogs can be pretty cool, but for the most part, I will stick with the cats.

My sister would agree with me, also: she and her husband own six cats, have never owned less than four in the twenty years they've been married, and have never considered owning a dog.

I will make a confession, though--my two cents worth isn't worth two cents; I'm allergic to dogs AND cats!

Good hub and a fun read.

Kari Poulsen from Ohio on October 12, 2009:

I, too, am a cat person. I love dogs, but my preference is for cats. I have to agree with all of your reasons, especially the entertainment value. :D

thank you Amelia23 for you comments.

i love all animals but cats are my favorite too ..;=)

Amelia23 on September 29, 2009:

I agree with ALL of them. I like dogs, but I love cats.

Stacie L (author) on September 23, 2009:

hello keverp; I'm sorry it didn't work out with you and cats.

Some people are "cat" people and some are "dog" people,

I guess .

Pamela Kever from Waynesboro , PA on September 23, 2009:

I am more of a small dog person myself and they have 7 out of your ten traits you mention for your cats.I like the loyalty a dog gives. Small dogs are also good at catching rodents (mine have caught 3 hampsters, 7 mice, not to mention cricket, roaches and flies. My larger dog has caught a Mole rat(was not a pet), plus misc unwanted smaller animals and a thief.

My cat history

I do not have a cat anymore because he moved to a rich neighbor.

I do not have cat anymore that kicks cat litter all over the house.

I do not have a cat anymore typing on my keyboard or a tail swinging into my face or mouth.

I do not have cat anymore the sucks holes in my socks or other clothing.

I do not have cat anymore that climbs up in my attic and spray and poop all over my storage of clothing.

I do not have any cat anymore sleeping outside underneath a wheel well.

Dogs are not dumb enough to sleep on top of a tire on a car.(lost 3 cats that way many years ago.)Dog poop and pee does not stink as bad as cat poop and especially their cat spray.

Stacie L (author) on September 04, 2009:

Hey David Fallon;thanks for commenting!

Your Paco is something else1 ;=)

David Fallon from Pomona, CA on August 27, 2009:

My sister-inlaw has two great but bashful cats. When I work on her place the cats just sit and stare at me. So I tell her if those two don't straighten up I'm going to make me some slippers. Their furs nice and soft. Sorry bad joke.

slippers? LOL

I'm a dog guy but I have to admit cats make better slippers.

Karen N;

thank you for your comment.

us 'cat people' stick together I guess! LOL

Karen N from United States on July 11, 2009:

Very cute article.Cat's have always been my favorite also.

wordscribe41 on June 26, 2009:

I love both cats and dogs (and all animals), but I do have a special place in my heart for the felines. There's nothing better than a happy, snuggly, purring cat. They can be so affectionate. I agree, cats can be trained, people don't give them credit for what they can accomplish. They are less work, no doubt, unless they develop diabetes or kidney failure. Ugh.

Stacie L (author) on March 22, 2009:

I agree _anton_ that cats do listen.I actually had trained cats;something a lot of people don't think can be accomplished.

Stacie L (author) on March 22, 2009:

thank you for reading and commenting on my hub NocturNalis 78 .I'll read it.

__anton__ from Palatine, IL on March 22, 2009:

I love cats and dogs both, but I will agree I think that cats make better pets. Most people think that cats just sit around and never listen but it's all in how you raise them. A well raised cat will be very affectionate and can be a truly great friend to have.

NocturNalis78 from Baguio City, Philippines on February 20, 2009:

Great hub, I have to agree with you on most parts. Personally, I love them both very much and wrote my own personal cats vs dogs hub yesterday if you are interested reading it. Tell me what you think, thanks and enjoy!

Stacie L (author) on February 06, 2009:

hey earnestshub; I grew up with lots of animals but prefer the company of a cat

I understand them and vice versa.;)

earnestshub from Melbourne Australia on February 03, 2009:

I love cats, but then I love all animals. I have enjoyed this hub, especially the beautiful pictures of the different cats breeds.

My adult children have 4 cats, 2 dogs and an eclectic parrot and six kids. The cats and dogs are wonderful, Eric the parrot is a recalcitrant and noisy person who eats like a truck driver and struts around threatening or even bashing any dogs or cats that get in his way.

Stacie L (author) on January 12, 2009:

thank you Kulsum and belfast for your comments.

I will check your website.;)

Dr Kulsum Mehmood from Nagpur, India on January 06, 2009:

Yes, I love cats.

Stacie L (author) on December 30, 2008:

You're obviously not a cat lover. This was written tongue in cheek.

bob on December 27, 2008:

Why would anyone have a cat in the house for a pet. They are one of the most disgusting animals on earth.

Stacie L (author) on December 06, 2008:

Oh cats have a very strong instinct especially with small prey!

Your cat sounds like a wild one! LOL

Ken Devonald from Edinburgh on December 06, 2008:

No! Stacie you have it all wrong! A good dog is just as good as a good cat, and I have had both. But my dogs have never killed four of my neighbour's cute baby rabbits in fifteen minutes!

Moses, my abbysinian cat, killed the first one, and I put him in the house, but he came out through the bathroom window and killed another. When I shut him in again he went upstairs and jumped from the top window to get the next. When I shut all the windows at the back of the house he went out through the front and got the last by which time there were none left...

Persistence was his middle name! But none of my dogs have killed other people's pets!

And yes, I did have a lot of explaining to do!

Stacie L (author) on November 05, 2008:

thank you Charlemont for your comments.

My cats have brought all sorts of little dead things for me over the years!

charlemont from Lithuania on November 05, 2008:

Very good hub!

I also like cats more than dogs. Cats will never, ever attacks a human, I just can't imagine this happen.

I guess cats will bring mice to show the results of their house chores ;) How else would you know a mouse was caught?

And cats are most eco-friendly mouse catchers in the world.

Stacie L (author) on November 03, 2008:

hey I agree wholeheartedly Shadesbreath! I love them alot.

They have their own personalities and quirks but I've never had one bark! lol

Shadesbreath from California on November 03, 2008:

I agree with you that cats are way, way, wayyyyyy easier to take care of. And, frankly, barking dogs piss me off more than just about anything else. I think I've griped about that in at least three of my own hubs, so, I'm way with you on that one.

Stacie L (author) on October 26, 2008:
